Here’s what I’m noticing in nearing a week of using the XS Max and having previously used the Note9 for a month: Overall, the Note has the better battery life in my use-case, but not by much, and not enough to really make a difference for me. The iPhone has always excelled at standby time, where the Note, and any Android for that matter drain quicker during standby. I do think the Note delivers better longevity during actual screen-on use though.

Overall, I can squeeze out 5-7 hours of SOT with the XS Max, and 6-8 hours of SOT with the Note, sometimes even pushing that top number closer to 9 hours. That’s just specific to my use-case though, and as another member pointed out previously, each side could be calculating SOT differently somehow. Everyone‘s usage patterns are different as well.

I think both would last you comfortably through a single day, but the Note is more likely going to push you further into the second day. For me, I recharge nightly when going to bed anyway, so either will give me enough longevity for my needs.
I feel like with my XS Max it won't last through a heavy day of usage and there's something worse on top of it, the charging time is so slow it takes me 4 hours and 50 minutes to fully charge while my Note 8 with a larger battery takes me 1 hour and 44 minutes! I'm starting to think the Note 9 would be a better phone for my usage, stand by time on the Max is awful, I'm losing 1-3% in 1 hour with screen off, even my Note doesn't drop like that in stand by.

To be honest it sounds like you could have a defective unit. Even if you don’t have a defective unit though, I’d still tend to think the Note9 would last longer for you. That 4000mah battery can really go the distance.

Wow my Max wasn’t that bad. And using my iPad charger it charged fully in about an hour and a half, maybe less. I only had to charge it up to full a couple of times because usually through the day I set it down on a wireless charging puck for mini-charges. I have one wireless puck that I rotate my main phones on through the day.

I found my standby time about equal to that of my 8 Plus. Oddly at night if I didn’t have it on a charger it did seem to drop the charge more than my 8 Plus. I didn’t think to check what it had been running during that time.

Anyway out of the various issues I had with it that ultimately made me package it back up, battery life wasn’t one of them. And my husband says his is good. Not as good as his Huawei P20 Pro but definitely better than his S9+. I’m sorry you had trouble. If you’re a battery hogging power user the P20 Pro is the one to get. My husband loves that phone more than he ever expected to. He had it as his daily driver for a couple of month. He would still have it as a daily driver but he is really knocked out by his new Series 4 Apple Watch. As am I. Which is why I won’t give up iPhones.

As much as I like Android I can't go for Huawei phones for security reasons. My Max is taking so long to charge but I'm also using the 5W charger, I could use the 12W iPad charger but wouldn't that make the battery run hotter and decrease its lifespan? I used to charge my X with the iPad charger and the battery health reads at 95%.

I did some testing in which I closed every single App, Wifi and Bluetooth, the display on the lowest setting, disabled all Push notifications and Background App Refresh, iCloud sync disabled and it dropped 1% from 40 to 39 in 48 minutes. I think It must be my SIM signal, there's times I have 1 bar and it's mostly at around 2-3 bars.
My iPhone 7 Plus used to lose 4% at night and that was 6-7 hours, I don't remember having these "small" battery life drains before my X or Max.

My battery stats read 3h 20 min of screen on and 1h 56 min of screen off and the battery is around 38%. I feel like the battery is really weak compared to my Note 8 since at 35% I'd have 5:30 of SOT and I knew I could squeeze 1-2 more hours until 5%.

Hm, I’m not sure if using the iPad charger is bad for the battery. There were threads on this forum that debated that before and I think someone heard back from Apple that it was safe to use the iPad charger.

The only time I’ve noticed my phones getting hot from charging was on the wireless charging puck. Sometimes charging them on it would make any of them, 8 Plus, S8+, S9+, and Max very hot. Most of the time, it was fine. And I have no idea what would have caused the heating. I’ve experienced the same alarming overheating when charging my Apple watches, old and new.

I'm a federal employee, Huawei specifically is a big no go for us, along with any Chinese phone. It's nothing but Samsungs and iPhones for us. Right now we're about 80% Samsung. Oddly, blackberry was nowhere in our 2018 budget. Lots of S8s and Note 8s.

IF a Chinese person somehow managed to read your emails or SMS, precisely how would that affect you? We have infinitely more to worry about with our own western governments snooping on us.

:D:D:D Believe it or not we used to have just one iPhone apiece and no Androids. When the Note 7 came out is the year we opened our second lines and started going a bit crazy experimenting with Androids. Oh wait...yeah I did get an iPhone SE when I had the 6s Plus...lol back then I felt the 6s Plus was too big and I was tired of carrying around such a big phone. Goodness I was a different person then!

But I used the SE until I got an HTC10 and used that as a daily driver with a Galaxy S7 Edge as a second phone. So for awhile there I actually did quit iOS and throw in with Android full time. I remember I had to notify my friends to erase the group chats I was in due to losing iMessage. It wasn’t as many people as I deal with now so it wasn’t too bad.

Oh goodness that all sounds confusing. Yeah somewhere a few years ago I went a bit bonkers didn’t I? Oh but it’s been fun! :D

Nope. It all makes perfect sense to me and I enjoy reading your reviews. And it isn’t like others of us on here haven’t done the same thing.

And now I'm going to see what the Note 9 is like in an all Google system. I wonder which will be more efficient.

So decided to return my launch day iPhone XS due to a myriad of issues and being generally underwhelmed.

Have opted for a Note 9.. It's being delivered today!? I had a pleasant time with my S9.. thus Note 9 was an easy choice.

Any tips on checks to do before initial set up of the Note 9?

The very first things I do :

Set up the device, with zero personalization
Update the device ( OS or Security patches )
factory reset the device

Then, set it up as I want it..

The Note 9 is amazing.. I was mad at Sammy for screwing up my gear S3, but their new update has resolved the issue resulting in me buying the Note 9 as well!

Amazing device! Great choice !

Thank you mate.. I have done what you have recommended and the device has been a delight so far.

I may get the Galaxy Watch 46mm as a companion (go big or go home approach).. but need to find a good deal on it first! :)

Unfortunately in the UK.. there are no perks/deals from Samsung for sim free purchases (although there were a few perks at pre-order stage).

Awesome.. it’ll serve ya well..

There’s one more setting that I enable :

Settings - General Management - Reset - Auto Restart

I scheduled mine to auto restart every Thursday at 3:00 am. I’d do this with iOS as well, if there were such a setting built in.

With the holiday season coming up..I’m sure there will be some great deals on the Sammy watch!

Enjoy!

What screen time do you guys manage? After 10 years on iPhone I finally changed and bought a note 9 (had a 7 plus before). One of the reasons of changing besides the ridiculous price of the xs max which I wanted (it's not about no having the money but simply because no phone is worth that kind no money for me) it was the battery which I find almost the same as my 7 plus.

Besides that I'm quite happy with it

Serious question:

How do you guys justify buying this phone and it doesn't even come with the latest OS and won't for several months?
