Hmmm which has me thinking it’s the way battery management is handling the phone with apps
Is there anything we can tweak to fix this?

Text messages and stuff like WhatsApp, Signal seem to come through immediately. But other stuff like Google Wallet, or my bank apps which push notifications, or my daily Bible quote at noon are always delayed.

So it's not everything which has slow notifications, just some things.

I don't wear my watch when I am at home, I only wear it if I go out of the house. So having on time and quick notifications on the phone I feel is important.

I'd check for those apps in battery management and find the list of apps put to sleep and exclude them if they are included ... unfortunately I have a locked out S23U currently so I don't have access to dig settings

Now, speaking of some not so good stuff. The basics. Phone calls. I've had more dropped calls, or issues where people try to call and it goes straight to voicemail. Never had the issue with the iPhone. Same carrier, T-Mobile.

I’m sorry to hear that. Are you having the issue mainly in one area like home or different areas if you can tell …I’ve used the phone up until end of last month on T-Mobile with excellent coverage along my iPhone which I use daily both are great on their network ..

Yeah so the sucky part is that it's happened in multiple locations. Called T-Mobile yesterday and they're unsure was to what's causing it because they see that I have great signal.

I did some reading up and it looks like it has been an issue with this phone, although not widespread.

Ughhh that sucks ...I wonder if you can reset your network connections if it would help ..also check if your Wifi calling is on and maybe cause an issue in and out of service

Is a Samsung running Lagwiz or Touchjizz or whatever they call it now, truly on par smoothness wise as a Pixel Pro phone?

The one thing Pixel phones always gotten praised for is how fluid smooth the UI is with no jank or lag no stutters, etc...

Does a S23 Ultra truly compete and on par with zero hiccups or stutters like a Pixel?

Touch Jizz 😅

I briefly had a pixel 7 pro before I got the s23 ultra

TouchWiz or whatever they call it now has come really far from the days of the s8 and earlier

It's really smooth and I'd say no jitters like the days of old and in some instances better than the Pixel

There's still lots of things I don't like s23 v the iPhone but I'm doing my best to get used to slightly different way of working.

I'll post a review of my experience in a few days

I might just swing by a Best Buy sometime this week to really look at it as 23 Ultra in person.

Last one I own was the Galaxy S8 and I recall returning it all weekend later because it felt laggy and jittery.

I know, I'm half joking with my comments here. But I am serious when I say it's been many years since my last Samsung phone, the S8.

Been on Pixel's since.

Are you not planning on going on board with the pixel 8 pro? Or 8?

As much as I love the pixel pros, I've been extremely underwhelm with the battery life. Couple times on vacation last few months. The battery just drained so bad when I was taking pictures and texting them and stuff like that phone was dead by dinner time

And the modem again when I was on vacation. Terrible signal. But that could also maybe be T-Mobile and not the phone itself.

And the screen brightness it's mediocre outside.

So I would only seriously think of the S23 Ultra if it's better and those specific areas.

Gotcha understandable...might be time for a change to see and you can always return it during the return period...I will say the S23U is a big phone so definitely get a feel for it in hand

I forgot to mention Bluetooth on my Pixel 7 Pro. Just never works properly in my Subaru.

I always have to restart the phone for it to connect almost every time

And my info payment system is up to date with the latest updates and so is my phone.

The car has wireless Android Auto

You know I have no issues with my Bluetooth and the car about 90% of the time but once in a while only with the pixel it will not connect and I see a message with my Bluetooth to restart the phone.. I've not had the issue yet with the fold but will keep an eye on it.. I've never had an issue with my Samsung phone..

Just to recap my thoughts, and sorry to bore you all again;

I currently have the Pixel 7 Pro, bought at launch, previous phone to that was the Pixel 6 Pro, then the Pixel 4 XL, then 3 XL, then 2 XL, and last Samsung phone I owned was the Galaxy S8.

Reason thinking if switching to the S23 Ultra over the 7 Pro are a few points;

-Battery life on my 7 Pro is mediocre at best.
-Screen brightness is just ok outdoors.
-Bluetooth seems to sort of suck for Android Auto in both our cars that have wireless AndroidAuto, I always need to restart my phone to get it to connect like 75% of the time.
-Modem seems just ok, not the best connection at all times, but that could be a T-Mobile network issue as well.

But the reason I really love the Pixel phones, is for the smooth fluid no lag experience, they always feel fast and never lag or have any jankiness. The last few Samsung phones I owned, for sure were Lagwizz with hiccups and weird things, but that was the Galaxy S8, many years ago.

In all honesty serious question, has Samsung closed the gap to have their high end Ultra phones on par smoothness wise as a Pixel Pro? But if there still a little bit janky or laggy, then I'll pass and just stick with Pixel.

As I said above I had a p7pro briefly. The Samsung feels smooth and has come a long way since the s8 plus which is the last Samsung I owned

If you're intent on getting an android instead of iPhone the s23 ultra is the best choice right now

The p7pro battery was crap which is one reason I sold it on

The s23 ultra isn't perfect by any means. Coming from an iPhone 11 pro max which just works - you have to tweak settings and download different apps to make it work for you.

But yeah just to summarise - it's definitely not jittery or laggy

I may keep it, I may sell it on

But if I sell it then it's only because an iPhone just works most of the time . The s23 ultra is definitely faster than a p7pro and iPhone 11 pro max at least

Big titties, something I should warn you about that can be frustrating is that you have a lot of double apps. Most of them you can just ignore and hide, but photo management is a bit annoying, especially if you upload photos to social media quite often. By default social apps look for photos in your gallery app instead of Google photos, so you always have to maintain two photo apps which is very annoying.

Otherwise great phone!

I've had probably 20+ smartphones the last 15 years. Out of those only 3 or 4 were iPhone, the rest were Android. For some reason I just can't get comfortable with iOS, feels odd to use and kinda outdated looking OS wise, and the UI gestures not nearly as good as Android. But that's me, not Apple's fault LOL.

I will admit Apple builds a super nice high-end device, it's extremely well put together, and I do like the FLAT display, and how it seems the screen literally goes from edge to edge all the way, where my Pixel phone doesn't seem like that especially the bottom area, but that's just a nitpick.

Also even though I don't like iOS, the apps have more options, they just do, in a good way., Want to set the display size or font size, you can literally do that specifically to each individual app, which is awesome, and something Android doesn't offer. I can set Reddit to have larger font than say Chrome if I want. I really like that iOS offers that.

Most of my smartphones over the years have primarily been Nexus and Pixel phones.

Having had Samsung phones from the TouchWiz days and Nexus and now Pixel phones I think I can answer your question.

As someone who generally prefers a lean and mean OS Pixel UI or vanilla Android is more to my liking than a heavily skinned version of Android.

That being said I have to give Props to Samsung from taking TouchWiz and turning it into something I actually enjoy using. I used to install custom ROM during the TouchWiz days because the UI was so bad.

Now is OneUI 5 perfect and free from all the previous Samsung meddling? No. It still has a sh*t ton of duplicate apps, it has a ton of extra settings. But it is so much better optimized than before. No lag, animation stutters anymore. Everything is super smooth and responsive. You can now put apps in sleep or deep sleep so the apps you can't disable or uninstall you can put to sleep.

Compared to my Pixel the s23 ultra still feels faster. But not by a wide margin. Battery life is much better on the s23. The screen is much more efficient and gets a lot brighter. Did I mention the battery life?

Personally I would say this. OneUI has gotten to the point that I don't hate it anymore (which is huge) and there are some things I actually prefer. BUT if I could only use one and had to rate it just off software I would pick the Pixel. There is just something about Pixel UI. I really like it. And I know what you are talking about on Samsung where you get an odd glitch. Go to the Pixel and no glitch. I still get them but it is not a big deal.

I would wait until the Pixel 8 series comes out. If it solves a couple of the nagging issues with the 7 then I would just stay on Pixel. Of course if you find a great deal on a s23 ultra I would take it. It is so far in my opinion the best phone of 2023. I think the Pixel 8 Pro might just come in second or possibly overtake the s23 ultra?

Heck if you put Nova Launcher on the s23u you will have a closer to Pixel feel?

You should try an iPhone just to see what it is like. It is one thing to look at a device, see how it works and move on. It is another thing to own one and use it for a long period of time.

Just like a Pixel phone the iPhone is much more than just the hardware. But the hardware does have a certain high quality feel and design.

After you get used to it, you can see why people love an iPhone. When I got my first iPhone there was a learning curve. Once I got past it I enjoyed the experience. One of the things I noticed over time is I felt like I could keep my iPhone a long time and I wouldn't miss anything. Like it just didn't slow down.

You may never fully embrace the iPhone but if you got one and used it for a while I think you would grow to like a good part of it.
