Okay a bit of cold water from SuperSaf in that he thinks there’s shutter lag that will affect pet photos. But I’m not convinced that his way of testing that proves it.

We need a real cat. I have many. I’ll judge for myself if lag is a problem.

My husband just texted me that MrWhosetheboss says the camera is faster.
Alright, time to put him to my no-watch list then, the same with MrOppoShill. These people clearly are not worth the views as they don't even know what they're talking about.

First, like one user has commented here, motion blur != shutter lag. Second, Samsung's camera takes picture when you lift your finger from the shutter button. This is in contrast with iPhone that takes picture when your finger first tap on the shutter button. This of course can feel like a shutter lag. For a so-called "Tech" youtuber to not even aware to point this out is embarrassing (yeah, MKBHD too).

And the thing is, the S23 now has some new settings that would help prioritize capture speed. It's in the camera assistant menu, called "Quick Tap Shutter" and even further, there's an option for "Capture Speed" where you can set to prioritize speed vs quality. How do I know this? By playing with a demo unit. And these high views tech youtubers don't even mention it? What a joke.

I hate the race to be the first / earliest available content with the tech YouTube scene these days. Sure, they're capitalizing on the curiosity of the new devices and I don't blame them for doing that! First impressions aren't my issue, but what does bother me is these creators who upload these full reviews or camera comparisons really early. We all know they haven't spent more than a day and if they're lucky a few weeks with the devices, tops. I'd rather wait for a detailed video a few weeks and maybe even a month later!

Just had a look at phone, the green is exactly olive oil green but the Black is just beautiful. Price is not bad as well so good news all up.

Flossy Carter has a video unboxing of the green and it is pretty bad looking. In fact all the colors look pretty washed out. I don't know who was in charge of color choices this year but I am not a fan.

The lime is the only color I like. Even the blue looks a bit odd but maybe it will be nicer IRL.

I guess it doesn't really matter as they will be going in a case anyways.

It is hard to really judge from pictures and videos but at least Flossy took video where you could see from multiple angles. The green reminds me of the 60s pea green just several shades lighter but same hue.

Price is not bad? Maybe for the base s23? The base Ultra is $1200 and the one they are selling is almost $1400 with the storage upgrade but at least until the 14th it is the same price as base. I never thought $1200 for a phone would be considered, "not bad"?

Heck the ultra 512gb msrp is as much as my discounted M2 MBA.

Phone prices are crazy if you ask me. I love tech as much as anyone and phones are really important but you can lose them or drop them a lot easier than a laptop.

Comparing to s22 range not much big difference
Sure, comparing cost from last year in USA is the same but I just think phone prices are getting out of hand in general.

Of course s22 had much better trade in values so it is kind of like raising the price on the back end?

But I get what you are saying. At least they didn't raise MSRP and gave more storage, better chip and camera on ultra.

“Samsung's camera takes picture when you lift your finger from the shutter button” if true, this is one of most stupid UX decissions Ive ever met

I don't disagree that phone prices are getting crazy, but what Samsung is charging is basically par for the course at the moment. I'm in Canada and I can get a S23 Ultra 512GB right now for $1550 after the free memory upgrade and $100 voucher. I just looked up what an iPhone 14 Pro Max would cost for the same specs and it's $1960.

I'm not loving this trend but until people stop paying for it were kinda screwed.

Yes I completely agree. Instead of viewing the early content from the tech YouTubers, it is better to wait a few weeks or more until proper / dedicated reviews are out. In my opinion, the best detailed reviews of the cameras are always from dedicated photographers who know what they are talking about. I'm hoping real shutter lag will not be a major issue on the Ultra 23.

Trouble with this wait period, the best reviews usually arrive outside of the Samsung pre-order window for snapping up the best deals. So it is then a catch 22 situation & you have to make a judgement call on the pre-order buying process.

Samung UK gave me a £200 voucher code last year during the pre-order period that really helped towards my Z Fold 4 1TB purchase with other discounts. I think the code was due to helping Samsung shift the expensive 1TB models. I could do with another code like that now for the Ultra pre-order!

Samsung using green as this year's hero colour is interesting. In certain light in Flossy's video it does look great and a decent dark green but in other angles too light. Also it wouldn't match the same green on the Watch Pro 5. So I'm on the fence.

Punchy and vivid colours would have been nice colour options from Samsung instead of the pastels.

On the exclusives, I like the Graphite & Red with the black borders but the red looks burnt orange red again, not proper red. I was intending to pre-order Sky Blue but the silver edges are too bright & shiny for me, I'd prefer the Sky Blue with black edges like the S22 Ultra. Lime looks different & cool but silver edges again.

Going for a hands-on today in the shops before I pre-order. Phantom Black is looking the most beautfiul & classy I reckon from the YT videos. My choice will be between the black, graphite or green. Plus mine will be slapped in a leather case anyway when out and about.

I have seen a few others on social media post similar results. They say the S23 Ultra is a beast on battery and super silky smooth as well. The display is said to have 30% less of a curve than the S22U. So almost flat :)
See now I was going to sit this one out until your last sentence “So almost flat”. I’m now hovering over the pre order button 😬

In the UK if you work for emergency services, NHS you get a 10% discount from Samsung. Pretty significant saving overall

What you just mentioned isn’t the solution. Quick’s shutter in camera assistant app doesn’t solve the problem and it reduces quality. And how Samsung do things it’s an awful way of taking a photo. Whole point of point and shoot is for it to just work. You shouldn’t need instructions how to take a photo.

So I've seen something similar before. If you keep your finger on the shutter button, both samsung and apple, it starts videoing and I think that's why they dont take the photo immediately but rather when you lift your finger because then the phone knows if your intention was to take a photo or a video.

For me, taking a single photo, tap the shutter button, it's done and very quickly too, no appreciable lag.

If I was trying to take a series of photos like that guy was of something moving, I'd use burst shot rather than stabbing the shutter button repeatedly https://www.samsung.com/au/support/mobile-devices/taking-burst-shots-on-one-ui-3/

With the S23 Ultra, I'm really hoping Samsung have reduced the shutter lag compared to the S22 Ultra. Why they still can't get these basics of camera functionality right is baffling. Burst works well but will reduce picture quality.

Everything else with the S23 Ultra camera set-up looks a decent step up, especially the video; I would say now finally on par with Apple. 8K video looks pretty special. It has taken Samsung long enough!

I'm not going to hold off on my pre-order as the UK discounts make sense but this potential shutter lag is a real concern as I take a lot of photos with movement.

yeah I'll definitely give it a good try when I get it .... for me the lowlight photography is more important though

Good point, also if you add a case to the Ultra pre-order this automatically takes off a 10% total discount. UK only I believe, this 10% doesn't work in Europe.

This currently makes a 512GB £1,147 and 1TB £1,259. Quidco / Topcashback extra 5% off too but may not track with the Samsung discounts.

Still bloody expensive but much less than the equivalent Apple memory sizes for the 14 Pro / Pro Max.

Yeah for sure, from the early hands-on's it looks like Samsung has dramatically improved lowlight photos which is great stuff.
