I agree the touchwiz is far from perfect for many. But why is everyone saying Samsung is not good at software?

The S-Pen software is excellent. Many of touchwiz features are very well implemented, like smart stay, multitasking split and window, Peel remote app, Private Mode, and the list goes on.

While obviously it's been a problem for some, I personally never had any ram issues or frequent lag/stutters on any Galaxy device.

I am with you on that. I don't have lag or stutters on my Samsung phones. I do agree that it might an issue for some and don't deny that some have had issues with it.

I think that Samsung shines so bright in the hardware and components space that it make their software look weak by comparison. Now they just need to spend more time and resources to optimize TW a little more.

Your making it sound like those of us criticising them are hating software.

Personally I'm not - the world isn't black and white. You can criticise their weakest area which is software in comparison to their fantastic hardware without saying it's terrible.

Up until lollipop - Samsung Touchwiz had zero consistency from a design aesthetic perspective. Each of its applications sang from a different design hymn sheet and made everything feel disconnected.

Lollipop on the Note 4/3/S5/Alpha improved things considerably from there - but under those improvements the old legacy file and services are still present. Many redundant legacy files doing nothing but consuming both space and ram.

The S4 stutters badly with Touchwiz, simply comparing side by side to the GPE shows what a massive difference in performance the software makes.

The Note 3 was great - it was first time I found a Samsung phone that didn't feel hampered by its heavy software and indeed they really improved S-Pen features.

So it was sad to see the S5 struggled with its 2gb of ram from the outset. Samsung made TW once more a little heavier than it was even on the Note 3 despite not having spen apps / features - which whilst the Snapdragon 801 can power through, it struggled memory wise because TW had increased in amount of system ram it used itself.

The Note 4 software wise was essentially the S5 with the Note 3's pen features and sadly didn't really bring anything to the table software wise or spen wise over the previous Note 3. Sadly the Note 4 has been one of the devices hampered by the lollipop update for many users.

Lollipop on both the S5 / Galaxy Alpha and Note 4 uses more system ram than it did on KitKat. That's an example of how Samsung pushed out lollipop but didn't truly optimise TW at same time.

The S6 has arguably cleanest TW aesthetically but it still came with more bloat than even the Note 4 despite claims of debloating before launch. Indeed it uses more system ram standing still than the Note 3/Note 4 etc.

Likewise the new TW brought other minor issues like non standard scaling for its grid - resulting in many broken Widgets on the standard launcher. Nova doesn't do this on the device but the new TW does. It's things like that which show a lack of care and focus.

If they can design and machine beautiful hardware, construct amazing CPU's requiring precision beyond argument - it's sad then that the software running all that beautifully designed hardware is a little sloppy in areas.

That's not saying Samsung are terrible or bad at software, it's saying they lack refinement. It's the difference between 'ready to ware' and 'haute couture' .. One is serviceable - the other is beautifully tailored.

I want to see Samsung not only make beautiful hardware but pay as much attention and refinement to the software.

That's far removed from hating or thinking something is terrible. It's not a black and white subject.

I think this article was originally shared on here but it discusses Samsung's approach to innovating. It might be a few months old now and the headline is harsher than the article aims to be but an interesting read nonetheless.

http://m.fastcompany.com/3042408/why-samsung-design-stinks

I've always found Asian companies harder to work for in terms of pushing through an idea. The Japanese have a different approach again and often use a 'kaizen' system where input is welcomed at every stage of development. The problem I found was convincing those at the top a method is good before it's too late.

As others have said I agree the weak point for Samsung is the fact they don't produce the OS that runs on the phone. Adding demanding features doesn't always translate well and Samsung are not alone in that. TouchWiz is not horrendous by any means and we see mixed experiences from amazing to minor niggles. No software is perfect though and for me it comes before the phone itself. If I could do some of the fundamental things I need now, I would jump back and give Samsung another go. :)
