"America’s airline regulator, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), is considering banning the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from all flights.

Samsung has asked for the voluntary recall of 2.5 million phablets after reports that at least 35 devices had burst into flames while they were being used.

Following this, an FAA spokesperson told Gizmodo it was “working on guidance related to this issue.”

“If the device is recalled by the manufacturer, airline crew and passengers will not be able to bring recalled batteries or electronics that contain recalled batteries in the cabin of an aircraft, or in carry-on and checked baggage,” it said.

Samsung has not launched an official recall within the US, so the devices are currently still permitted on board flights in the country....."

"We are requesting that passengers who own them do not switch on or charge them in flight," Qantas told Reuters in a statement. The companies weren't ordered to do so by aviation authorities in the nation, but did so on their own accord in light of Samsung Australia's recall.

The ban may get a lot wider, as the FAA is reportedly considering its options. A spokesman told Gizmodo by email that "if the device is recalled by the manufacturer, airline crew and passengers will not be able to bring recalled batteries or electronics that contain recalled batteries in the cabin of an aircraft, or in carry-on and checked baggage......"

Makes sense to me, but no one with half a brain should have a Note 7 on them anyway.
I can't see how this is getting worse for Samsung, they've asked for them back.

The phone is a risk, don't be stupid, back it up, turn it off and send it back, why take stupid risks?

As for the initial article, is it all flights or all U.S flights? There is a difference.

Things just went from bad to worse for Samsung; three Australian airlines just banned the use of the note 7 in flight.

I am glad they are taking precautions. There is a precedent for exploding phones on airlines in the article below. I think the FAA is going to more cautious now.....

According to a KOMO news report, a girl on a spring break flight from Washington State to Hawaii had her iPhone 6 spontaneously combust mid-air:

“All of the sudden there was like 8-inch flames coming out of my phone, and I flipped it off onto the ground and it got under someone’s seat, and the flames were just getting higher and a bunch of people stood up.”

That is horrible...I am glad the family was not hurt! This whole thing just keeps getting worse! People need to follow the recall guidelines.

I don't how that will change things? Samsung has said to replace the Note 7 and will refund and or exchange for another phone. I guess the government can force people to do it?

Yeah good thing even the dog wasn't hurt. I don't get why some people are still hanging on to these. Do they think it won't happen to their Note 7 or they simply can't go without a phone for a while? That or they haven't heard about the recall?

I can't see how anyone can NOT beware of it by now. They get emails from their carrier and Samsung and it is all over the news everyday.

wow that's crazy, imagine if their little 8 year old had been in the car when it went up in flames, Samsung would have had a huge problem on their hands..... The problem is that the new post-recall stock hasnt come in so most people haven't traded their phones in.

I guess because folks dont want to go through the hassle of getting and setting up a temporary loaner phone until the post-recall note 7s come in.

I said it in the other thread, I suspect there will be someone seriously harmed before this is resolved.

Whilst it's commendable Samsung did an unofficial recall it's clear some users still haven't got the message and there are potentially dangerous device still being utilised without care.

As much as anyone can point out examples of other devices failing in the past, there is a massive difference between a device the company that manufacturered has chosen to recall because of a now known fault and one that by chance fails out of the odds.

People here were arguing for days that well the chances were slim, no one has been harmed it's the same as 'insert fruit company' device or no property has been damaged.

It's clear now why Samsung has recalled and those things dismissed have very quickly started to materialise.

This is not the same issue as any other product. This is unprecedented and Samsung should work with official bodies likewise to make sure the recall is stuck to. There are already reports of some users who bought Note 7's via third parties or online or via import not having luck returning their device. Samsung need to just accept any of these devices regardless where customers bought them and facilitate the swapping to an even greater extent.

So please folks less tit for tat nonsense on this subject - it's utterly irrelevant. Let's discuss the actual issue at hand and its ramifications.

What ax is that? I've owned every iteration of Note since the first one, and up until the release of the most recent used a GS7E as a co-daily driver with an iPhone 6S+. What is my narrative, exactly? And what "facts" have disputed it?
