The Tab will be obsolete even before it can hit its stride in the market. Apple will release the iPad 2 by Jan, complete with a 1.5Ghz processor, front/rear cameras (5megapixels), HDMI out, etc... in both 10.1 and 7" models and they'll price it $100 cheaper than this years model. Should be a nice kick in the teeth for the Galaxy and any other iPad wanna-be's.

The Tab isn't innovative or dynamic in any way, at least not in any way that will justify the cost for it. People will buy it, no doubt, but it'll be funny when they continually get asked how they like their 'iPad'. At which point they'll have to explain it's not an iPad, but a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Now there's a mouthful to explain 50 times a day. But, as they say, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

But here is what Viewsonic's European marketing manager says about Android tablets: ""We recognise many users may be transitioning from a netbook but will possibly struggle with the learning curve of a new OS, even for simple tasks as uploading photos or using a VPN. " That from a company who is preparing an Android based table for sale should convince anyone to go with an iPad instead.

Now that is just silly. Maybe Apple should have told me how to upload photos to websites, or maybe I should discover the magical features and functions of my ipad on my own. I'd love to be able to list eBay auctions on my iPad but it is flat out impossible unless I want to list text only ads.

Setting up a VPN takes less button presses on my android phone than on my ipad. Just wanted to point that out to you.

Why, thank you. I haven't seen that yet. :)

However the point I was making still stands, I think. Any migration from OS to OS will require an acclimation period.

Not to say I am personally unhappy - I love my iPad (one of my coworkers said it was like my keys now, ha) and I am still waiting for a larger Android tablet to be released before considering parting ways with it. I have no real interest in a 7" tablet, as cool as the Galaxy seems.

this article says $300... I want to know if they actually put an IPS screen in, or if they cheaped out to VA or TN.

http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/110577/samsung-unveils-tablet-to-compete-with-ipad

That is with a carrier subsidy. Which is why I think they keep insisting on putting phones in tablets: They assume people are stupid. Hey it is only $200 + 24 monthly payments buried in your carrier bill.

From the videos it looks like the Galaxy Tab has a PVA screen. Better than TN, but not as good as IPS.

I keep waiting for this avalanche of great Android tablets, that are supposed to undercut "overpriced" Apple.

But all I see is smaller screened, lower resolution tablets cost more money, or cheap crap-pads made out of off the shelf generic compoents.

This is pretty much the first competing Tablet that has non TN screen. But it is in kind of a different niche, with half the screen size, and still it cost more money.

What would a 10" Samsung cost?

its nice but i dont get how they dont get that 16:9 on a tablet seriously sux, i mean come on it will have a keyboard as tiny as an iphone when you hold it in portrait...

Get off your high horse. Those "specs" are what you HOPE for Apple to come out so that your argument can be valid.

Give me some proof or I'll be calling Bull **** on this one.

Hmmm, I honestly don't follow smart phone sales very closely, so you'd now have to define "sold"...

If the price dropped to FREE in a few (3) weeks, yet the phone "sold" over a million in less than two months (8 weeks), what happened exactly? Are we counting free phones as "sold" in this equation?

Still, it seems to me at the end of the day, if your product totally rocks and is in high demand, typically you don't need to give it away for free, yes?

Third party retailers get paid when they sign people up for contracts. That is where the real money maker is.

The up front cost is nothing compared to the long term monetary gain that the carrier/retailer will get.

This is similar to how the console game market is.

Sony or Microsoft dont earn a profit when they sell the consoles themselves. They earn the majority of their money from selling games and/or

subscriptions.

Going back to the Tab story: Samsung already earned its revenue when it sold its inventory to retailers/carriers. It is out of their hands now. The inventory now belongs to the retailers/carriers and they can do whatever they see fit with it, including setting prices. Samsung collected the money right when they sold it.

It'd be funny if apple redesigned their iPod nano and made it significantly smaller and yet kept the same price point.

Size has nothing to do with it. Just like the iPhone compared to the iPad, you can get an iPad starting at $500, yet it's much bigger than the iPhone.

Uh, did you guys forget? This tablet will have very little app support. That means many apps won't even install on this device.

The iPad still retains compatibility with all iOS apps (minus the ones that require a mic).

All the Android devs sighed when they realized they have to support all these random tablet sizes with different GPUs and CPUs.

Add to the fact that this device is priced higher than the iPad with a smaller display and you have a massive failure (along with other android tablet competitors).

Its a 7" screen. iPhone is a 3.5" screen.

yeah it sure is, but you dont get my point. when you hold a 16:9 7" tablet in portrait mode and the keyboard pops up, it will be small. i guess it will be as small as the entire screen of the iphone. If you dont agree, do the math yourself ;-)

Yes, but Apple is kind enough to give us an iPod Touch minus all the phone bits and it starts at less than half the price of the iPad.

Size has much to do with cost. Screens that are twice as big cost at least twice as much. The screen will be a big part of the cost of something like an iPad with capacitive touch IPS screen.

Samsung needs to ditch the phone bits and sell this for $350 USD.

Wait. The iPad has a mic? WHERE?! Are you talking about the input from the speaker line?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A400a Safari/6531.22.7)

It's next to the headphone port. I use it all the time for skype.

I still think the 16:9 ratio in portrait mode just looks hideously wrong. It's the reason I never bother using portrait mode on my widescreen monitors.

That being said the Galaxy Tab looks a nice capable tablet, though i have no experience of Android. What it has shown me is that a 7" iPad is viable.

I gave up my iPhone 3GS for a Motorola Droid and haven't looked back. Ios is a very polished experience, but i find it very restrictive. I want options. And i think iTunes is evil. That being said, android has a bit to go to get more polished, but for us techies this is a much more flexible os.

IMHO.

Pocket-link wrote a great article about comparing these 2(specs wise)
http://m.pocket-lint.com/news/news.phtml/35222
Despite a lot of similarities between the two products, there are some obvious differences that stick out like a sore thumb. The Apple iPad towers over its opponent in terms of screen size, memory capacity and battery life. However, the Samsung Galaxy Tab gets a few crafty jabs in by way of its compact and lightweight design, its ability to function as a mobile phone and its camera and video calling capability.

Although not a definitive knockout, we have to declare the iPad the winner on points, as it trumps the Tab on so many scores. We're also not sure how much of a selling point the phone capabilities on the Tab are as, with a 7-inch screen, it's flipping massive in mobile phone terms. However, as with many things in life, the success or failure of the Tab will largely come down to pricing. We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything...

I think, that as far as memory is concerned, Tab actually comes on top. It has twice more RAM than iPad. It also has up to 32GB internal flash memory which is lower than iPad. However, since Tab has a SDHC slot, one can stick a 32GB memory card in it and the total storage will be 64GB (like iPad). The advantage here is that one can also swap flash cards.

Display

The Galaxy Tab has a higher resolution.

Galaxy Tab 7" 1024 x 600 @ 260 ppi

iPad 10" 1024 x 768 @ 132 ppi

Winner: Galaxy Tab

Storage

Why does iPad get the higher score?

Galaxy Tab is expandable. You can swap out an unlimited amount of micro-SD cards and have a larger storage space.

iPad is limited to a maximum of only 64GB.

Winner: Galaxy Tab

Even the Apple lovers Engadget acknowledges the superior Galaxy Tab's display.
