I'm on a 2015 model too.

My method means you don't need to turn off the rootless thing. You can't edit the file in place, so if you drag it to the desktop it makes a copy of the file. You then reboot into recovery mode, open Terminal and move the file from the desktop to the right place. I mean you could turn off rootless make the mod and then turn it back on again. My method just means one less step after the mod.

ok gotcha thx

the 5 in 2015 looked like a 6 :p glad we got same model, going to do this later

How do you reboot in recovery mode?

So you input that terminal command to move the file and reboot? Interesting

Not working for me?

Edit - it is 1536x960 in rdm and 1680 native system pref and rdm woo

Csrutil disable is what I did in recovery mode. Must have messed up the path typed out

and changing OP to reflect that

Fresh install from the App Store onto an empty external hard drive. Confirmed working (via my method) in macOS Sierra GM! (Version 10.12 (16A320) Time to upgrade!!

Really? I've still got plenty of glitches when using 1650 on my 2016 MacBook :(

Haven't seen any so far. I was playing with VMware last night, Safari, Photoshop, iTunes, minimizing, maximizing, dragging around windows and going full screen in some apps and not having any issues at that 1680x1050.

Havent had any issues either. Phew. But I will also be incredibly cautious of updates and refer to this thread before making major leaps, cause I know how that goes. May be a issue with graphics driver for whatever the 2016 rMB is packing. I think someone else was talking about graphical issues too so I changed original post with an anecdotal caution.

on a related note ,after taking a 1536 and 1680 hiatus with macOS sierra betas, feels GREAT being back.

Big fan of 1536, since I like the math behind it of being 2/3 of the pixel density of screen, and a wonderful half step between 1440 and 1680 real estate

I'm also having some trouble getting this to work on a 2016 m7 Sierra GM. Followed the OP down to the last T. Disabled csrutil... copied the data... copied the file back into the appropriate folder. Still bugs out. Bummer.

1536x960 fwiw coming back from standby mode sometimes has wonky inverted looking graphics, but toggling between another resolution and back to it addresses it

havent noticed same thing on 1680x1050

I have a 2016 Macbook Retina 1.3GHz m7 and can confirm that 1680x1050 HiDPI doesn't work on 10.12 Sierra. non-HiDPI or Standard 1680x1050 works.

It worked 100% fine on 10.11 El Capitan... I may downgrade.

The screen will show garbage. Rebooting doesn't fix the issue. I had to connect an external monitor to fix the issue (which changes the resolution settings on the MacBook).

Good news! The 10.12.1 beta 1 that was seeded today fixed non-standard resolutions for me on my m7 2016 MacBook! Running 1536x960 as we speak, without any hangups or graphic glitches. :)

Anybody have luck getting 1584x990 to work with sierra? Tried using

with no luck.

I can confirm the same, also on an M7 2016. Crapola.

What resolution?

1536x960

2015 12" Macbook. When I turn it on from off, the screen glitches for just a second after I log in. That's the only time that happens. But I'm still wondering whether I should be concerned (I just bought this Macbook).

Happens with me too. 1680 I wasn't noticing it. Probably specific to that resolution

Ok, great, that's reassuring. I just switched to 1280x800 and can confirm that it doesn't do it at that resolution. Switched it back to 1536x960 and it does it again when I log in—but it's only when I log in, so it doesn't bother me. As long as I know nothing is wrong with the computer...

1680x1050 on my rMB 2015 causes also a small glitch at startup.
It remembers me back in 2015, when i've got my brand new rMB with OS 10.10.x Yosemite preinstalled. Right after i made this resolution-"hack", it made those glitches at startup. It never caused an error or something, the glitches eventually vanished between one of the last updates of Yosemite and OS10.11 elCapitan. Now the glitch is back with Sierra, but i expect no issue at all.
