So from the start I was under the impression that my iPad's screen was pretty much scratch proof. Despite that I've been extremely careful with it, the back is protected by a hard case and if I take it anywhere I put it in its sleeve. I've never once dropped it or dropped anything on it, but today I noticed 3 or 4 scratches on the screen, one of them being pretty noticeable :( Needless to say I'll be buying a screen protector shortly. I know there have been a few other threads about similar stories but this is just a reminder, YOUR IPAD IS NOT SCRATCH PROOF!

On a related note, will a screen protector help cover up already existing scratches or make them more obvious?

Any idea on how it was scratched?

Anything that can scratch glass can scratch the screen and a lot of things can scratch glass.

Yes, a urethane film based screen protector will protect the glass.

Damn, good thing I got one. I was worried about it being scratched in the first place that's why I got one. Never believe anything they say, go with ur gut instinct.

I'm pretty sure if u put a screen protector on that it should cover it and not be seen.

I also have a scratch. I have had it in an Apple Case since day one. Apple Store would not replace it for me. It's invisible though. Can only see it when the screen is off and certain lighting conditions.

Only sapphire crystal glass would be 'scratch proof'
Ipad is just plain glass

No offense but you have to be a complete and total idiot to not buy a screen protector for your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

No offense taken. I don't have on on my watch, car window, house windows, tv, mirrors in my house, glass table tops, iphone, iPad, etc, I just use them and they are fine.

Oh, almost forgot, I don't have plastic slip covers for my sofa either.

You also don't touch all those other glass items, keep them close to your face or put them in your briefcase to take to work.

I've been rocking the iPhone since it dropped... Bought each on release day... Used all of them constantly... No case.. No scratches... Just love the look and feel of the phone by itself.. Screen protectors are not necessary.... That's why apple pulled all of them from their retail stores... If you like them... Enjoy... That's why they are there... I'll keep my iPhone & my iPad naked... Besides, by the time it gets scratched the new version will be out & I'll have a new 1.... They are durable, but with yearly hardware updates.. ALMOST disposable.... Almost...

I LOL'd.

I had the clear protector over my 3Gs. Then, one little corner peeled up. Then, a small bubble got in there. Then, a dog hair. Then, more bubbles. Eventually it just became more work than it was worth to constantly fiddle with the thing. I suppose once all these things start happening to your screen protector you're supposed to get a new one. Bah, I can't be bothered. *Fingers-crossed* for no scratches.

I've owned 2 1st gen iPhones, 3 iPhone 3G, 3 iPhone 3GS and 3 Touches and never scratched any screen. I bought the first two for me and my wife who are careful but the later 3 products I also bought for my 18 yr old brother who lives with me who is reckless as hell with all 3 devices he owned or owns and none have a scratch. I also now have 3 iPads from launch day (wifi) and they have not scrachted either but in this case even my younger brother is more careful.

I am sure the people having these issues are not exaggerating and have been careful but the amount of people who have scratched there devices are very small. No I don't have any statistics but pretty much all my colleague own idevices and my friends also and I have never heard any have a scratch.

Disagree. I have had the iPhone since day one, iPod touch, iPad, ect. Phone rides naked in my pocket with the change/keys and I have never had a problem.

No desire to put a big piece of saran wrap on my nice bright screen, thanks. Somehow my iPhone, iPad and ebook reader have survived scratch free. Had the first iPhone for 2.5 years, too.

Dude that's funny, have me cracking up over here :)

It is a choice, but one should know the risk. I dislike screen protectors and having one on will seriously diminish my enjoyment of the device. I will just use it the way I enjoy it, with reasonable care. If it gets scratched, I will buy a new one.

People on this forum really need to lighten up a bit.

I'm living proof that the iPad can scratch even if you do take good care of it. I've had the original iPhone and the 3G and never had a problem with scratching (i did manage to scratch the original a little but that was completely my fault).

Does apple really claim that it can't be scratched? If I brought mine in would they replace it?

Wrong. Nothing is scratch proof, not even diamond.

I have had every iPhone and have never had the screen protected .and have never had a scratch. That said, I do have the anti glare film from PowerSupport on my iPad and I love it - so mu.ch so that I may have to get one for my next iPhone.

Offense taken. I've had three iPhones and no scratches. I did shatter one one time but that's not the same argument.
