Sadly the US government could help
One of the major fights here is AT&T vs having it on Verizon. Now in say Europe everyone uses the same frequencies (sorry Tmobile 3g) and companies have a choice they can either all put their towers in the same place or work out a roaming agreement btn companies that does not involve the consumer (i.e. they have better coverage without adding additional towers) Prices are regulated throughout the EU and contracts are extraordinarily cheap. You can either go into any electronics shop and buy a phone (they may through in a small pre paid card for free) and then go and elect which carrier you want or basically instead of having a contract you put down a down payment on a phone and pay it off monthly. Sadly here I have had to fight tooth and nail if I want to bring my own phone and am still forced to sign a two year contract ( you are making back my subsidy how?) If we all used the same system, bought our phones full price we would understand the system, repair or replace our phones ourselves and not pay exorbitant prices or be shocked by a replacement. When I move in three months my 150 dollar a month bill for my husband and I on AT&T will shrink down to btn 40-50 dollars a month and will get better service and more features. Sometimes the government should interfere.
