I'm not sure if anyone else was given the impression that the iphone's screen is not scratchable, but it is indeed easily scratched by anything with say, sand on it. I had it in a pocket that had a wee bit of sand in it, and now my screen is completely scratched. Just warning you, watch out for sand. :(
 
you actually make a very valid point haha

do i not have to pay for the week or so of service?
 
i too would like to see pictures. i've given my iphone a lot more then sand... it is still perfect.
 
I actually just couldn't think of an excuse for running outside to my car to get my camera :D

Nevertheless, I am still impressed by the screen's durability. Unfortunately, sand, which is harder than glass, WILL scratch the glass.

I was just messing with you. i still haven't uploaded the last of my launch-day images... that was friday. :D

also, don't you mean NOT running outside to your car?
 
AT&T Return Policy

Okay, I signed up just to post on this forum. I was gonna send a link to http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/en_US/popups/return-policy-popup.jsp and say that it's not returnable if it's damaged.

HOWEVER, I just reread the entire return policy and there is a restocking fee for damaged items.

PHEW! Cuz last night, I decided to be bold and NOT use my incase cover, and I placed it in my front shirt pocket. After a few drinks, it somehow magically popped out of my pocket. Screen was perfect, but the edge of the metal trim was SCUFFED!

Thank you for posting this thread and allowing me to REREAD the return policy.

I shall be returning this badboy asap. When are new shipments arriving??

your new one will get scuffed too. the metal's gonna get messed up - just accept it. even if you have it in a case, little dust and other things get inside the case and leave marks...

One thing I always used on my many Palm organizer's screen was an automotive product called "RainX". This is a type of wax I guess that you apply to the outside of your car's windshield and it helps repel rain, sleet ect.

Like I said, I have used this for years on every palm screen and never had a problem and those screens were plastic. I am still using the original bottle I bought at least 6-7 years ago. I have already applied it to my iPhone screen 2 or 3 times with no problems.

I think it helps protect the screen from small scratches and makes the screen slick. Then again it may do absolutley nothing but I thought I'd share. :D

You people really think they will take back the phone with scratches all over it??? Correct you do have 14 days to return the product assuming it hasn't been abused.

Just because you were careless and the screen got scratched why should Apple or any company take back that item??

What is wrong with you people. They are talking about a damaged item straight out of the box not an item that YOU damaged.
 
Funny I've had a nokia 8801 (stainless steel) for almost 2 years and there isn't a scratch on it. I keep it in the little suede pouch it came with in my pocket, but I still use it alot and I'm sure some sand, etc gets in there. What is the trim on the iPhone made from?
 
mine has a hairline scratch too .. i was thinking about exchanging it and paying $59, but i dont know if my at&t store will get anymore within the next 2 weeks. i'll go check.
 
Don't you people think you're just going to get a light scuff or hairline scratch or slight sand damage in two weeks once you're outside of the exchange period? Or that if you change your behavior today, you still had that sand in your pocket yesterday and genuinely caused that scratch or scuff or whatever and really deserve the scratch/scuff because you caused it?

I just don't get this attitude that YOU caused an almost completely insignificant, eventual, wear-and-tear-type of cosmetic damage, but that it somehow isn't going to occur again once you return it.. or that you even have the right to return it for that. The restocking fee is not just a "cosmetic defect replacement" program. You won't be able to do it forever.

If you have an iPhone and don't want to worry about scratching the screen, do yourself a favor and spend the $14.95 on Power Support's "Crystal Film". I bought some the day I bought my iPhone and I will continue to buy them for the life of my phone. "Scratch resistant" or not, the screen is the life-blood of our favorite new toy, so protect it.

EDIT: Power Support says they are $16 on their site, but I bought mine for the price listed above at the Apple store.
 
Hmm...that disagrees with other stories I've heard...but then again, I would be impressed if the iPhone could withstand sands(which is really just small rocks) being pressed against it.
