I'm not sure if anyone else was given the impression that the iphone's screen is not scratchable, but it is indeed easily scratched by anything with say, sand on it. I had it in a pocket that had a wee bit of sand in it, and now my screen is completely scratched. Just warning you, watch out for sand. :(

Do you have sandpaper in your pocket? Because i went to the apple store and none of theirs has scratches yet and people having been using them for over a week now. only marks are on the bottom from people putting the iphone wrong in the dock.

maybe you should buy the screen protector.

Funny I've had a nokia 8801 (stainless steel) for almost 2 years and there isn't a scratch on it. I keep it in the little suede pouch it came with in my pocket, but I still use it alot and I'm sure some sand, etc gets in there. What is the trim on the iPhone made from?

I have a 8800 , but it is a different type of screen then the iphone.

The protective glass is tempered similarly to some medium segment watches with sapphire glass applied. According to the manufacturer sapphire glass protects the screen from scratches perfectly (much better than in usual devices)

Did you guys really think that the iPhone was a magical and invincible object? You spent $600 you really should get a case and protection. Personally considering what PCWorld and some others have subjected iPhones to I'm finding the simple explanation of sand to be somewhat dubious. Of course I would expect the metal parts to eventually get scratched. Even titanium scratches.

Ah - missed that somewhere in the flurry. Too bad - I think a lot of us legitimately wanted to see what the scratch(s) looked like.
snapping a picture can be an extremely difficult task... you shouldn't expect that much of people!:rolleyes::p;);):rolleyes:

Actually I have a hell of a time NOT taking pictures that show scratches. I guess it depends on the lighting but its not that hard really. Thats why I find the whole thing questionable.

exactly. whenever i snap fotos of my iPod™ it ALWAYS looks MUCH worse then it actually does- same with my other toys™

Absolutely. With the causal snapshot, how can one not show surface defects?

So what's the verdict? Will AT&T accept returns on physically blemished iPhones?

I know that you have to have a legit problem. I dunno if I do but:

1) Safari crashes a lot. Okay, I'm sure we all have the same problem.

2) iPhone crashes a lot. (Screen freezes, must do hard reset) It's happeend 4 or 5 times.

3) Kept asking me to re-enter visual voicemail password yesterday.

So wassup?

I had a few of those on my old unit. I purchased the invisishield full kit for my new phone, though.

Where did you get the invisible shield? - did you get it online, or thru a store?

This morning I dropped the iphone on the street (I was using my V-moda headphone and got tangled in this stupid, huge Belkin adaptor - don't know why they have to make it so big, it sticks out of my bag – anyway I wanted to change a song, got it out of my belkin leather case and BAM! dropped it 4 feet)
I now have impacts on the back panel, and the plastic antena -

I will not return it, as the impacts are too big to be missed (!), besides, it happened once and am sure will happen again, so I want to put this complete plastic shield on it.

Thanks for any info

the reason why I couldn't get scratches to show up is because the only lens I have at the moment is 75-300, which has an extremely small dof and i could only get a small portion of the screen in focus

I really dont see why you assume i'm making this up. I love my iphone
Just trying to help
****ing christ, what is the deal with people acting so rude on this forum?

I picked it up at a kiosk in my mall.

If you have an iPhone and don't want to worry about scratching the screen, do yourself a favor and spend the $14.95 on Power Support's "Crystal Film". I bought some the day I bought my iPhone and I will continue to buy them for the life of my phone. "Scratch resistant" or not, the screen is the life-blood of our favorite new toy, so protect it.

EDIT: Power Support says they are $16 on their site, but I bought mine for the price listed above at the Apple store.

Actually I think that Power Support site is cheaper because the Apple store charges $4 shipping while I just ordered on Power Support site for $16 and no shipping.

I will most definitely take some tomorrow in daylight

Didn't mean to be rude, but this was your initial reason for not getting the pics. Remember, this is a rumor site - skepticism is inherent.

Sounds like you got a new one - hopefully, it and sand can admire each other from afar. Seriously, enjoy your iPhone. It's an amazing piece of engineering.

Yes, I acknowledge this, and I did attempt to snap photos the next day. Due to my lens, I could not take a picture that really showed the scratches, so I did not post any photos.

For you nonbelievers, here is the best shot I took when I had that phone

iphone scratch picture

I got the iphone last Tuesday, and on Saturday night it was scratched. I have no idea how as I didn't drop it, kept in a differant pocket at all times and handled it with care. I let my friends touch it but they also didn't drop and probably handled it more carefully than I even did, so I have no idea how it got scratched. Its not a big scratch (maybe half an inch or so) but its extremely annoying. I got the 4 gig version so if I WANT to get the 8 gig version if ATT gets it in the next week then I'll have to chalk up another 150 more to get rid of the scratch. Ugh

Is there any possible way to remove the scratch?

Heres the pic of the phone taking from isight.

Fixed the image to point out the scratch and crop the pic a bit.
