for the uniformity test I recommend turning on night shift at 50% (slider at midline), enable “manually enable until tomorrow) and lower the brightness to about 50%. This might not be your usual use case but it accentuates things a little bit

On Samsung panels I have noticed the top of the display is brighter than the bottom, almost like a gradient. Very distracting when scrolling text to read a long article

On LG the bottom of the display edge may appear brighter when looking head on and the display will have a very bad green tint when tilting the bottom of the phone away from you and top toward you, even at a slight angle

1. settings, accessibility, touch, turn on AssistiveTouch
2. Change top menu so one of the options is Analytics
3. Tap the AssistiveTouch button and run Analytics
4. After about 2-3 minutes go into settings > privacy and security > analytics and improvements (near the bottom) > analytics data
5. Find the sysdiagnosis file, tap it to open it
6. Share and save it to iCloud Drive or wherever
7. Open files app, decompress sysdiagnose file and it will create a new folder
8. Open the new folder, go into IOReg
9. Open IODeviceTree.txt
10. search the word “panel” without the quotes
11. One of the entries will say something like raw-panel-serial and right next to it will start with G9N, G9P, GVC, GH3

a little more convoluted than plugging into 3utools but you can do this in store without a computer within about 3-4 minutes if you get the sequence down. This works on display models too if anyone wants to add DPs

Thanks I figured it out good reference post though

Oh Hello Panel Lottery! I know this game very well.

I can confirm.

This year it is quite interesting. My Pro Max 14 had a Samsung G9N Display which I always considered as very good.
My iPhone Air has an LG GVC Screen and on first tests I noticed the following:

The Air Uniformity is great, but the screen is not brighter than the Pro Max 14, which it should.
Colours on the Air pop a little bit more (around 5%). Off Axis is also slightly better.
In Dark Mode: Air is more black (more contrast). (Sorry for blurred photo)

Left Samsung (Pro Max 14)
Right LG (Air)

Depends on the Brightness Setting , both can look very similar. But the dark mode on the LG is definitely better.
I will do more tests in bright sunlight tomorrow.. Noticed that in bright sunlight the Samsung Screen had a better white point.

I do wonder how much of this is having the LG panel or Air specifically vs. this years phones just not being in practice as bright as Apple touted.

In store without doing direct comparisons, no models on the floor (17, pro, max, air) seemed blindingly bright or appreciably brighter than last year's.

it seems like it could possibly be how they touted how much more anti reflective the new panels or glass is, but in reality, it's not that dramatic.

Would love to find out more though, in case I am actually missing out.

Are you gonna keep yours?

brightness might have something to do with ambient light, I am sure if you shine a flashlight into the pill at the top of the display it would become blindingly bright

Crazy how these variances get through QC, starting to wonder if there’s any actual QC at all.

Got my 17 Pro Max today. It’s not perfect, and the picture makes it look worse than it actually is, but I refuse to go through multiple exchanges again. It feels like the same hassle every year, and I just don’t have the time anymore. So I’m keeping this one. Honestly, it looks almost identical to my 16

Which panel is which?
G9N, G9P, GVC, GH3?

I got G9N on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, been pretty happy about it in the last 3 years, I do have some burn in due to the Always On display, but it’s only noticeable when the display is gray and in with low brightness.

Will test my new 17 Pro Max when I reach home.

First two Samsung, last two LG

BOE are only supplying China right? And is there a clear winner between LG and Samsung or just tastes?

I was at O2 shop today and I checked out the Pro Max and the Air.

Pro Max - Green tint and top part was bit lighter with NS and TT
Air - The exact same story

Yes.

Some photos of the Air next to 15 Pro Max.
Oof I’m sorry. This is the same level of green tint color shift I had on the Air and 17 Pro Max I returned. Personally, it’s unacceptable. But if it doesn’t bother you, then enjoy your phone.📱

I have my final Air arriving today. I’m 99.9% sure it will look like this too. So I’m already mentally ready to head to the apple store to return it later today.

Crazy how we just can’t get excited to receive our new devices because of the panel lottery. Imagine if the lottery wasn’t a thing. I’m pretty sure Steve Jobs wouldn’t have allowed this lack of QC to happen. I picture him flipping a desk lol

The variation in panels is akin to the subtle variations in Tim’s pitch of saying “good morning”

Only real ones can tell a difference between them. To the average person it’s all the same, hence the lottery continues

It’s going back for sure. If it was something I would only notice here and there, maybe I would keep it, but this thing flashes green when I type on it one handed and the phone tilts a bit.

I had the exact same feelings when I waited for my preorder to arrive, ready to be disappointed. If I hadn’t seen good 16 Pro displays in stores I would believe this is just the new norm for this display technology.

I can only order and return via mail where I live, which makes playing the lottery even more “exciting”, so I really need to think if it’s worth the effort.

Indeed. I do see a slight green tint on the LG panel. But for me the angle is approx 20-30% before it shows. However I’m really pleased that no longer have that pinkish tinge that Samsungs have always exhibited on the panels I’ve always owned. It’s a breath of fresh air.

Finally saw a YouTube video where the YouTuber got an Air with the bad display. He didn’t receive the Air from Apple. He bought it at Apple Store. But still good to know it’s not just us lol

And of course he doesn’t notice it or mention it.

Video here, around the 5:20 mark:
