I'm quite a perfectionist but I've honestly never had quality issues like these, apart from the 2013-era MacBook Air, where it was a struggle to find one with a flush trackpad. I think to this day not all MacBooks have it flush towards the bottom or one of the sides. I've seen one that was particularly deeply recessed into the body towards the right on a friend's M1 Air, to the point where it feels uncomfortable when you slide your finger outside of it and is kind of obvious that it's not 90deg flush even when you look at it.

This iPhone 15 is the first time I'm having issues with build quality and hardware. But the screen is uniform and very good when it comes to color. Perhaps I've never had a lemon but I don't expect every OLED to be exactly the same. Currently G9Q which would be Samsung. Don't know what my 13 had.

TBF I don't think 99% of the people would notice my two small cosmetic defects. I'm sure there a lot of iPhones out there with small defects that the owners never spot and think they are perfect. They just use the device and don't care about close inspecting it

How I would love to be one of those carefree souls…..alas I seem to be genetically pre disposed to notice every fit and finish imperfection on every electronic device/car etc. I can literally walk past a car and catch a minor paint miss-match from a repair out of my peripheral vision….its a gift and a curse!

How is the display lottery this year? I was quite happy with my display until I checked it with the camera, 5% grey, 10-15% brightness, no night mode. Dark streak on the top left corner:

Back in the 13 pro max day I replaced 3 devices because of the screen, one with an awful red tint in half of the screen, and two because they had a similar shadow on top. The 4th one had the same, but much less noticeable, so i kept it.

Do you guys think it is worth to go to apple with that? I'm quite happy with the rest of the screen and I'm afraid to end up with something worse.

Out of curiosity I checked my 13 pro max after 2 years of heavy use, and you can tell how flawed is the OLED technology, this was a perfect panel, except for the same shadows at the top following the notch line.

Obviously the camera makes everything 10 times worse and with the naked eye everything is barely noticeable, but I remember it was a perfect grey slate with two darker ears on top.

We're similar. I mean, I don't want to use the OCD definition lightly because there are people diagnosed with it with real and worse issues, but I think it's a spectrum and we might be a little bit. What I noticed is that some techniques work to lessen it. Like don't indulge or enforce the thoughts, and don't "check" the defect every time it pops in your mind. The wabi sabi Japanese philosophy also works, trying to let go of the quest for perfection, accepting instead the beauty in life's imperfections. What I'm saying is that I experienced that trying not to care eventually works. There's nothing to gain worrying and thinking about it, even if we're predisposed to it. Not giving a f is hard but it's really the key to happiness..

I think that if it looked fine before you catched it on camera then it's perfectly fine. As you say, OLED is not a perfect technology, and you'll never find an iPhone with a perfect screen because of that. It's just not technically possible, and you can incur in a phone with worse defects, like a bad battery, bad coating, mushy button, dead pixels, crackly speakers, slightly deformed chassis, not flush glass, dust in the camera etc. So if you can't spot it unless you fixate on it I'd say it's more than good enough and you can start not caring and enjoying your new phone.

Yeah I was able to see it with my eyes really forcing it in a completly dark room with a dark grey image (was looking for signs of early burn in, as I have seen some people having issues with that), but I have a hard time seeing it even in the same dark room scrolling through websites with dark mode enabled.

The rest of the phone is pretty good, no sharp borders, no heat issues, no scuffs anywhere, so I think i will settle up with this one, my 13 pro max was more visible and eventually I forgot it had the same thing until today.

Next time I won't even check unless i see some obvious issues as my first 13 pro max, which hard half the screen red tinted. I don't even dare to check my OLED tv, I might end up crying. 😂

Me too, I get you. Especially for a premium device, I do nitpick. But with OLED I guess it's more that unless it's horribly obvious in normal conditions (like a general yellow tint, dead pixels), you can't do much. It's never going to be perfect. A dead pixel I wouldn't take and thankfully I've never had one, but I much prefer having a screen that's got a slight green tint on gray backgrounds when I look at it at night and focus on that specifically but that has perfect blacks, is energy-efficient and has no issues with blooming, goes as dim and as bright as I'd ever need it to, and is super color-accurate. Hardware will always be a lottery, what they can do is have stronger QC as some of the issues we've been seeing with the 15 series just looks like neglect in that department if anything.

I feel like a lot of this forum genuinely has undiagnosed OCD hahaha. Funny enough I actually do, so that doesn’t help 😅

Did about 5 returns but I managed to stop myself and make peace with this one. The hardest part is trying to define what is actually a fault vs what I’m being hyper sensitive to. If something is barely visible and only under strict conditions, its likely the latter.

This is basically what mine looks like too. Lightness spot is even in the same place, which leads me to believe this is probably expected behavior on these large OLED panels. Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself so I don’t make myself crazy lol so thank you for sharing!

I'm super curious about this, are you able to snap a pic of it?

All the 15 Pro's I bought and returned had this so I concluded it's pretty much standard for the current set of phones.

Wow man I just can't believe it. Statistically it's like a crazy small combined probability, you could probably have won the lottery more easily than this.. you made me triple check mine (on weather app too) but I just can't find any. You sure one isn't dust under the screen? Which would suck the same. Unbelievable..

Dannnnng, I just sat and checked my phone in the weather app and couldn't see anything like this. That's gotta be some insane luck if its really 3 in a row!

Might be dust too but yeah…it’s still under the glass 🤣 omw to the Apple store rn 💀 I think Apple doesn’t want me to upgrade from my 7 plus 😅

Damn 🥲 well at least you have an Apple Store close by. For me it would be a 200km round trip every time or shipping it back and waiting for a replacement..

I returned it…unfortunately they didn’t have a replacement device…welp

That is so rare to get stuck with 3 phones that all have dead pixels / dust. Happened to me before, I 100% get it. Sorry man, really stinks.

It could be because the same batch / groups / factory phones are sent to that Apple Store and it’s just a bad batch? When my 2nd phone had the bad screen I picked up my current one at a different store just to make sure.

Don’t do it 😆😆😆

Checking for dead pixels was always part of my new device “routine”, more recently if I can’t see them (and I always can) I don’t go looking for them. Just checked and it’s all good, this phone (touch wood) really does seem to be as close to perfect as I’ve got on an Apple product which is ironic seen as there seems to be more issues this year and I’ve escaped them all…..I usually get at least 2 out of 3! Might do the lottery!

I don’t think (not 100% sure) that you can get dust on OLED as there is no air gap and no backlight and each sub pixel is its own light source. The image above on the weather app looks like 2 dead blue sub pixels.

first one was a preorder and directly delivered to my house, second one was a pick up and last one was another pick up but from another store. Battery date : july, august, august so i think it might be 3 different batch...idk...I guess im just hella unlucky lol

That looks like 2 dead blue sub pixels, that is crazy unlucky once…..let alone 3 times. Sorry this has happened to you. I personally would persevere and return as you seriously can’t be unlucky 4 times in a row and this surely must have been a bad wafer with faults/debris and you got 3 from the same wafer?
