This same issue started for me today. I purchased a MacBook Air M1 7GPU base model. The OS was 11.0.0 when I purchased it and I updated it to 11.0.1 when I first turned it on. The screen saver is set to NEVER and turn off display set to 10 MINUTES. I've had the computer for about a week and it's done this 3 times today. The screen saver comes on while I'm actively using the computer. The cursor is active and moves but the screensaver won't go away. Pressing keys or the Touch ID won't activate the computer. Only solution is to close lid or hold down power button to shut down computer. I tried to adjust the screen saver settings and display off setting thinking it might fix it but it still happens. We have a 2015 iMac and a 2013 MacBook Pro on Big Sur 11.0.1 and they haven't done had this issues. Hopefully it's a minor software bug because I LOVE THE COMPUTER!!!! It's absolutely amazing otherwise. :)

Do you notice if this happes when you are using a prticular software? I have the same machine and it has not happened to me yet but i would return if it did. This bug is just not acceptable to be working around it.

I haven't been tracking if it's software related. I'm an app minimalist and don't install to much stuff on my computers. Microsoft Office, MS Teams, Magnet, and GoodNotes are the only third party apps I've installed. I only use the Microsoft apps on my work user profile and the screensaver issue so far has been on my personal user profile. Last time it happened I was using Safari, Apple news, Apple Pages, and Apple Numbers.

No issues with me on 11.0.1.

Screen sleeps but often doesn't get unused enough to even go black unless I leave the lab to use the loo/buy a coffee.

This has happened a couple of times to me on the base M1 Mac mini. In System Preferences both the Screensaver and "Turn display off after" are set to never. The only way I can get back to the desktop is holding the power button for a second to put the mini to sleep and waking it up again.

I've also experienced a problem with my mini losing connection to my bluetooth mouse and being unable to reconnect without rebooting (apparently a long-standing issue with minis?).

Another bug that happened to me yesterday was after I rebooted due to the bluetooth issue my monitor displayed purple flecks over the top of everything. A further reboot solved it.

This is my first genuine Mac after 8 years of using Hackintoshes as daily drivers, so the bugs are a bit disappointing, but I'm hopeful these are just software bugs that Apple will be able to fix.

Got MacBook Air M1 today and had it happen three times so far with screensaver disabled. So annoying, worse for my daughter who was writing at the time as she assumes the Air is bust

Same issue here. Big Sur 11.0.1. M1 MacBook Air, 16GB, 512SSD. Just sent feedback to Apple. They will resume looking at feedback after the Thanksgiving break (on Monday).

I have this same issue. 11.0.1. Has been happening since I got it, and hadn't change any setting from defaults when it first happened. (set up as a new Mac) Oddly my Mac came with screen set to never sleep even on battery when I got it. Regardless, this seems to happen no matter what screen saver/screen sleep setting are applied.

Anyone have any updates on this, I’m still facing the problem. Feel like taking the Air back and getting the Pro. Has anyone had this issue on the Pro?

I still have it. Its random and rare. I suppose it will be resolved with an update at some point.

I've seen this happen on 11.0.1, 11.1 Beta 1, and 11.1 Beta 2. I have an M1 MBA with an 8-core GPU, 16 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD.

Same issue here. Happened twice on first day (today). MBA M1 16/512. Screen saver: never. Two hot corners defined (but bug happens when cursor is not in corners).

I'm having the same issue. Screensaver randomly activates, and so far only a hard reset gets it back. Has happen 4 times that I'm aware of. This is our first Mac, and while it is mostly going well, this is driving me crazy.

Getting on my M1 Mini now as well as the M1 Air. It's worse on the mini because you can't close the lid and get rid of it. I had to shut down the computer by long pressing the power button, which is big risk for losing work. Unless anyone has any better ideas. In sys pref, screen saver is set to never.

Has anyone had any luck setting screensaver to 10 mins or whatever, and then not having the screensaver bug?

The posts on this thread indicate most of us have it set to never.

I'm having the same issue. I have a Mac mini M1 (16mb), and I'm running Big Sur 11.0.1. I'll be in the middle of doing something and the screensaver starts without warning. I haven't been able to exit out of it. I've had to reboot.

I'm just reading this thread after starting my own a few weeks ago... is this being discussed on the Official Apple Support Community board, at least?
