Regarding turning off "True Tone"... Just adding. Now back on my StarTech Displaylink hub, scrolling has improved on my 4k 60Hz external displayport monitor too. Still worse than my 2014 MBP Thunderbolt > DP (same monitor), but definitely an improvement.

Edit: I kind of take it back. Scrolling is still appalling on some websites.

I went and looked at those links. Both sites are Xenforo forums and the second one is using a third party add on. I am an admin on a Xenforo forum and it runs fine now on all platforms - after we pulled out the add ons and updated to current version. Before then it gave chop on all platforms.

Note what I posted a couple of posts back - the examples given were Xenforo forums with buggy third party addons. On our forums once we pulled the bad add ons and updated our software the stutters disappeared.

Hi All,

Bit of a find this week - hopefully will fix this Choppy scrolling, as well as pink screen crashes for me and others.

The issue:
I think I may have found the cause of my M1 MBA crashing and the scrolling being choppy.

My MBA would crash every few days, with safari getting more and more sluggish as time went on. Only thing I would be doing lately was literally having youtube on, playing music, and Mac rumours.... what a life eh?

I noticed though, that in the DOCK was the icon for ADGUARD after the crashes. This is the ad blocker thing I installed onto Safari.

The fix
I turn't off ADGUARD.

Straight away, Safari was responding a lot quicker, especially scrolling up and down! :)

I did not have a pink screen reboot issue for a while.

The crashing happened again though - I found that the ADGUARD was turned on again.

I've finally gone into the ADGUARD settings - and found the option "turn on when Safari is opened". I turn't this off.

I'll give it a week and see if ADGUARD is definitely the reason. If it is, I'll work out then how to uninstall.

Hope that help you guys! :)

Martin

It's really choppy when connected to an external display on my M1 MacBook Air. I had no problems from my previous 16-inch Mac and those before it. Super annoying and still hasn't been fixed with the latest 11.3 beta

Hi everyone, just got a new macbook air m1 and I am going mental with this issue. I have been using a 2015 and 2017 Macbook pro 13" and scrolling is smooth. It seems to me the new trackpad is super sensitive to finger moves and that makes scrolling choppy and jittery. I tried the following things with no success

- Updating to Big Sur 11.3.1
- Disabling adblocker/location services/ true tone
- Tried different browsers, Safari, Chrome etc.

Sent my feedback to Apple hoping they might fix it although I might return the MBA m1 in the end.

For what it is worth, I think it is an OS problem / bug. Not only does my M1 have the problem but, I have 2 other Intel Macs that also exhibit the slight stuttering. which was present in older OS installs.

I have the same problem with my MBP M1. Choppy scrolling in safari (barely unusable). Chrome is still choppy but better tho. I really hope apple will fix it in next update. Because I use macbooks since 2015 and really get use to it.

Choppy scrolling goes away for me if I use proper 2x scaling - looks like 1280x800.

For me, scrolling is smoother on iPad Pro M1 but slower like vsync is on at 60Hz vs scrolling on MBA M1 that is faster but less smooth so like no vsync. Personally prefer faster flickable scrolling with no vsync.

Hello everyone, seems to be solved with the 11.5.2 update that has just been released. I had like you huge jerks when scrolling my chrome or safari pages and other applications. For me, it seems to be fixed since today.

For me choppy scrolling is still present on 11.5.2. It definitely becomes better on some websites but in general it still stutters when scrolling

Thank you -- this 100% just fixed this issue for me on my new 14 inch Macbook Pro. Out of the box, it's set at native 2x scaling, but I had originally changed that to increase font size, etc. Now that I've changed it back to its default 2x scaling, no more stuttering in Safari.

Which setting are you using? is it the one that says 1147 x 745? second from the left? thanks in advance

Same issue with my Macbook Air M1 8GB 7C.

The only thing that helps a little is to use Chrome instead of Safari.

Currently using Monterey 12.0.1 (upgrading to Monterey solved nothing)

Same problem with my MBP m1. Monterey seems to be a little better with edge but stutters still present.

Can someone with 2021 Pros (14" and 16") confirm if this issue is present or not in those too? If not, would be a good reason to upgrade.

The stutter seems to come on randomly for me since last week. M1 13" Pro. No such issue before that.

A quick sleep and wake completely fixes the issue (2 seconds of effort, max) — until of course it starts up again. So it's only an annoyance but it's happening every few hours for me.

Quick look at iStat Menus also shows the FPS counter peaking at 25 fps (average 10 fps) when this stuttering issue starts happening, compared to being able to reach 60fps without. This probably doesn't mean anything and may just be confirmation bias, but figure it may be worth sharing.

Edit: Another user and I narrowed it down to the issue appearing after the Mac had gone into hibernation/ultra low power mode from continuous use. A normal restart after the fact would fix the issue with stuttering scrolling.

for some reason this actually works and it makes stuttering less severe. But how can this be, I would really not like to use this since it makes everything 2x larger :(
