There & Back Again
After the update a lot of my apps are crashing, such as Preview.

And then this is happening to my dock. Its only happening to the default apps in HS.

There & Back Again
The most frustrating thing is this update applied without my approval. I left my computer on overnight then I got a little notification saying it was installed during the night. Never had that happen before. I generally like to wait a few days to update because of all the issues people have, and here we are...

I disgustingly turned off my MacBook Pro last night after trying everything I could think of. Turned it on this morning and so far, everything is working fine. I really am afraid to do much, because I do not want anything to start up again, haha.

Apple, this is really getting ridiculous! Do you even test this before you release it, c'mon man!

PS: Apple did NOT want to release iOS 11.2 today, but were forced to...another screw up because of another bug in iOS 11. C'mon man!

I solved my issue. Initially I spent an hour with n Apple Genius which didn't really help. I then spent 8hrs restoring my system back to a date when I knew the problem didn't exist but that didn't work either. In the end I created a new user account on my Mac and got it running with my old login's etc (Safari worked in the new account). I then logged back into my old account and Hey-Presto, Safari works and spotlight doesn't flicker.
I'd be interested to see if this works for anyone else.

See if you have another security update, that seemed to fix the issue for me.

Before I re-installed HS I believe I did both security updates, but after reinstalling I think it it only did one? Security Update 2017-001 (I guess both share that name though). It could have done two I guess (not positive) and I don't have any other updates available.

I thought Spotlight had sorted itself out, but now, this morning, it's back to glitching out and spamming the console log (I didn't check the console log after it stopped disappearing/reappearing from the menu bar last night though...). Safari is still crashing too.

Maybe I'll try playing with User Accounts a bit again or just wait it out a bit more (or hope Apple gets an update out relatively soon).

Just adding to this, it looks like I have the latest/second update after checking it in terminal... opendirectoryd-483.20.7 (10.13.1 [17B1003] as shown in About This Mac).

I just enabled root and set a password for it, logged out of my primary account, logged in as root. Spotlight and Safari both seemed fine. Just logged back in to my primary user account and so far Spotlight and Safari both seem stable for the moment, but Console is still blowing up with a ton of activity. I don't see any mdworker or much mds activity though (had a ton last night). I do see a bunch of "loginwindow" process Month 13 errors and some other stuff though.

If spotlight and safari both keep from crashing, and continue to do so after another restart (will try that soon), I guess that will at least be some progress...

I am on APFS.

I ran First Aid on my root APFS volume as suggested by AVonGauss twice - the first time it showed errors, the second time it showed no errors, but left every app on my account crashing. Both times, First Aid freezes the computer for extended periods of time - just let it sit and do its thing - it eventually completes.

This morning, after rebooting, Safari and Spotlight are no longer crashing. All good.

The Month 13 errors are still streaming in the Console at about 6 per second.

NSA hack exposed itself for a lot of us last night and then slipped away back in to silence.

Think about it. Spotlight and Safari. Two areas where you search and enter your life in to the internet and on the computer itself.

Things still seem stable with Spotlight and Safari for now, having restarted a few times. Still a bunch of Month 13 errors in Console.

The Month 13 issue has nothing to do with the security update, it occurs before the security update is installed (and Spotlight / Safari crashing).

Don't care about Month 13 lines. I do care about the 500 other lines the Console is putting out in the Error section. =P

Anyone having this issue in 2018 (I was), the problem is due to a recent Safari update. Per the article below, go to System Preferences, select Spotlight, and UN-check Safari "History and Bookmarks". This should solve the problem. Next time a Safari update comes out, this should hopefully be fixed and you can re-check the option for Spotlight.

Hope this helps someone!
