I’m a three year cycle person myself now. Did the one year thing once and it was a waste of money. Within a day, the novelty wore off as there wasn’t much of a difference from previous model. Two years would be fine too but I guess for me, the feeling that I’m basically renting a phone and never owning it doesn’t make sense. I don’t buy outright as I rather take an interest free loan for two years and put my money to use now. Cost of living is always going up so never should you just buy it outright when given opportunity to pay off longer.

Also. There is a cost difference between year 1 and year 3. Some spin it and say it only costs about $400 more in 3 years to have the latest. So about $13 a month more to always have latest. Sounds reasonable but it’s still $400 in the 3 year rotation. I can buy up to 5 phones. When I upgrade so that’s $2000 I save when I don’t upgrade every 1 or 2 years

Last, I can understand upgrading something that cost a couple of hundred dollars, but at the cost, doesn’t make sense to upgrade iPhone and especially people who upgrade their macs , etc.

Obviously to each their own. The original poster will get backlash and people defending their own view. It’s why these boards exists. I look at my iPhone 12 camera and really like the upgrades on the 13 and 14. Saying that, it would be about 10-15% of my use and it’s not worth it. I’ll wait for the 15th to really get that feeling like it was money well spent and much needed upgrade.

It's so cute reading about tech-heads who upgrade every year posting as though they're in on 'some kind of secret' that saves them so much moolah in the long term while maintaining their near-continuous stream of fresh tech. It's your hobby, and that's 100% fine, 'you do you' and all that jazz, as long as you don't go trying to convince any of us that it makes any kind of financial / objective sense.
That’s why it’s said “smart” money is at least 3 years))

Ultra should be worth the 3 year upgrade finally..takes them a while to get old inventory used up…look for more ram too and the real front face cutout.

Periscope will take a lot of room. The obvious offset is from the now empty SIM tray area. If this is the case, does that mean the international models will not have periscope? Or will the trade-off be somewhere else, I wonder.

Kuo confirmed only the 6.7” model will have periscope.

I do not need to convince or justify how I spend my money.

Every year “some” tell us how we are wasting Our money. You got to understand that what is a lot of money for some, is near nothing to others. It is just the way it is.
100% this.

Also, every one has different priorities about how they budget and spend their money.
You don't have to be rich or even well off to buy the new iPhone every year, nor do you have to... or to even care to.

It always comes back to people feeling they "outsmarted" any one else for the decisions they decide to make.

  • USB-C port
  • "Pill" display cutout in place of the notch on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
  • Under-display Touch ID fingerprint scanner
  • A17 chip, manufactured using a 3nm fabrication process
  • Periscopic telephoto camera,

1 and 3 on that list will never happen, and good thing too

It’s so cute reading posts about people trying to outdo each other when it comes to gapping upgrades. Every three years every five years every seven years! See you at 15, 16, 17, 18!

I sell my phone every year because it’s going to have the greatest resale value before the keynote so I just jump on the next one. I’m on Mac rumors because I’m a tech enthusiast. If I wasn’t I wouldn’t bother hanging out here. It’s no fun to me to just talk about it. I have To buy it and live it.

So the people who just come here to talk about how they’re still on their iPhone 8 gives me zero interest or pleasure to read about. Lol

It’s also cheaper to upgrade every year vs 3 or 5. Etc. But let’s not rain on their parade.

great, don't read it then, in fact don't comment on it if you have zero interest lol

I think USB-C is close. As long as countries start pushing it and if Apple has to make two types of phones, it will get in line.

Why people still want the finger print?

The periscope lens will be nice but since Samsung has a patent, it’s still something Apple is holding off to buying but really needs to just pay royalties.

As for chip set, A whatever. There is little processing I do on my iPhone that needs real power. It’s all over kill now and the improvement is not being pushed by software. Really no need.

I go a long time between upgrades. I’m not budget constrained, I just find upgrading critical gear to be painful with all the specific accessories, set-up, tuning, learning, testing/trusting, diagnosing/fixing… I just procrastinate it. The Mrs. prefers to lease a new car every 3years, I prefer to buy my cars and keep them for 10yrs.

No one asked you to. Least of all me. Just don't try to convince me that a grand a year upgrading from iPhone 'n' to iPhone 'n+1' is always going to be money objectively well-spent. That's going to be true whether you're a pauper or a billionaire. The only thing that changes is how much that money means to you.
It will depend on how good you are at selling things. It is easier to get a top dollar for an iphone that is less than a year old. So an upgrade every year don't have to cost you a grand every year.

My 11 pro held me through since 2019 until now when I just got the 14 pro max. If there is a significant enough upgrade that is a must have for me, I’ll definitely catch you on the 15

Otherwise, my 14 pro max will carry me through the next 3 years hopefully

12 pro max…still good and no upgrade needed….it’s a 3 year cycle at min now….see you at 15 ultra..should be time be then.

I'm buying a 13 mini and plan on keeping it 3-4 years. The 14 is pointless to update to.

Things worth waiting for:

- dual frequency GPS in the non-pro models
- more carriers to support eSims (right now the lack of a physical sim is a total deal breaker for me)
- improved lithography/nodes for the future A17/A18/etc SoC's. Barely any performance gain with this release, and obviously 0 performance gain on the non-pro.

My guess is my next phone will be something like the iPhone 16 on the N2 node/2nm in 2025.

Existing camera/screen/etc is all fine for me. I do hate face ID though, I thought touch ID was much nicer. Face ID fails for me all the time when laying down/using my phone in bed, sometimes when wearing a hat or mask, etc.

I'm not sure what else Apple might surprise me with. I can imagine some new version or equivalent of bluetooth that works a lot better though. BT just sucks in general for all things. Inconsistent for pairing, airdrop, no lossless audio, etc. Maybe wideband stuff comes more into play for accessories.

I had a 13PM which I had an issue with so I upgraded to a 14PM. Nope - the upgrade unfortunately did not fix the poor T-Mo 5G issue for Atlanta.

With that said, some of the other things are better and in the end, with the $720 trade-in credit for the 13PM, I was basically charged $1/day for owning the $13PM which I'm fine with.

I think this is an excellent example of people doing what is best for them. We are all different and have different priorities and interests.

I think that most people splurge on something in their lives. While they might be frugal with iPhones, often they'll enjoy more frequent travel, concerts or photography. It's funny that people will sometimes justify their particular splurge as being more responsible than someone else's.

Even personal finance guru Graham Stephan who emphasizes how little he spends on something as simple as his daily coffee (50 cents or so) spends a fortune on luxury watches and sports cars.

10 years of coffee at that price wouldn’t get anywhere near a luxury Watch.

Makes me happy when people skip; although, apparently not enough do because stock is still terrible. This is like when people try to get people to like a certain food. If I like something and you don't, I want you to not like it so there's more for me.

Other than 3 I don't care, but they've been rumoring 3 for years. Makes it stupid to even read about anymore because it becomes crying wolf without any reason to believe anymore
