Just sold my 2G (3.0, not unlocked or jailbroken, great condition) on eBay for $206. Buyer paid basically immediately. It was through a E-check though so I don't know if it was legit or not yet. Just hoping!!

So after people in this thread said my American-buyer-who-asked-me-to-post-to-Nigeria sounded like a scam I spoke to ebay staff on the Live Chat thing, and they confirmed that the buyer's account had been hacked by a third party and that it was a scam! Truly frightening since they have my bank details - I'd be very worried if I had any money for them to steal! :p I have since relisted the phone and said I am only interested in selling within Australia, but that international bidders may contact me if they intend on bidding so I can make a decision on whether or not it seems to be a legitimate offer. I am very disappointed - my first sale on ebay and I get scammed!

How did they get your banking info?

OceanView:

I only accept bank transfers as payment, because I have had issues with PayPal, so my bank account details are available in checkout. :(

But it goes on - this morning the iphone had been purchased again at the Buy It Now price, and again, US bidder asking me to post to Nigeria. Excellent. Trying to scam me twice on the same item.

OMG! That's awful!
I just sold my iPhone about 2 weeks ago on eBay and didn't have any problems.
I guess it was beginners luck.

Hope you have better luck next time.

Time to report another hacked bidder account to eBay.

That's exactly why a lot of sellers require a PayPal confirmed shipping address, and say they will only ship to that address, absolutely no exceptions.

Sheesh, this is crazy. It sucks that you all are getting stuck with idiots as "buyers." Makes me wonder if it's more prevalent with the iPhone than other electronics...I've sold an 80GB Classic and my 16GB 2G Touch as well as a couple of cameras on ebay with absolutely no problem whatsoever. I did require immediate payment via PayPal when a bidder chose the Buy It Now option and refused neg-feedback sellers and only sold to US buyers, but those are the only restrictions I put on the items (and not all of them on all items).

I think they're targeting iphones because they are a popular device that cost a lot of money. My bank was about as helpful as a bag of dog sh/t so I guess all I can do is pray that these people can't get into my account - not that I have much to take, but it's irony that I am trying to save up for a new iphone and am getting scammed trying to sell my old one.

For everyone else selling things on ebay, I would suggest using all the buyer recommendation stuff, and maybe not having a buy it now price - because these scammers weren't bidding, they were using the buy it now option. I have to say that ebay were very helpful - I guess the scammers might also be targeting newbies, because I have little ebay experience and probably looked like an easy target.

Personally I would prefer to use paypal, than handing bank information away!

Believe me, so would I, and most people, I'm sure.
My issue with Paypal was that my account was registered with an email address linked to my sidekick. I had my contract terminated, therefore the sidekick email address was no longer accessible - didn't think anything of it at the time since I rarely used ebay at that point. I only started selling on ebay about a week ago, and then needed to be able to log into my Paypal account for payment purposes, had forgotten my password, and obviously couldn't have it sent to an email that no longer existed. Went to make a new account and attach my debit card to the account, and was told that one card could not be linked to two accounts.

This scamming stuff succeeded in scaring the living sh/t out of me, so I called Paypal and got my account sorted - no more available bank details. :) Since I'm an 18 year old student, I have virtually no money available to steal, but I'd still rather not deal with it. ;)
