Yes. Lightroom is supposed to be highly optimized for this new line.

I’ll likely wait a little bit to see some real world examples. But overall I was expecting modest gains in performance and battery life. I figured that would be it. Not the case from these early benchmarks.

I also use my MacBook for my day job in addition my photography. But any modern laptop can swing that. It’s used a lot each dish doing double duty.

My Pro nearly melts when doing uploads of raw files to edit in Lightroom. Sometimes I have a few hundred, sometimes well north of 1k.

I realize that it’s a task but I expected it to hold up better. It gets externally hot and sluggish. The battery also drains insanely fast so using it on the road is not all it’s cracked up to be. I’m hoping these M1 Pros and will chug along better with that.

On a side note, I have found the iPad Pro to be a joy to use for Lightroom much to my surprise. But that’s not really there yet as an all in one solution for me.

I’m sure the apple store on 5th ave will have some on display in the next few days. I’ll check it out and see how I feel overall about it.
Lightroom is not yet available in arm64 form. That may also apply to the other software you are using. The M1 Macs are not "any modern laptop", they are for many applications a brand new platform. Every app you use may have native versions or may work fine under Rosetta 2 but I wouldn't assume that unless I had seen some evidence.

It’s going to be available next month. So not really a long wait there. Any modern laptop was a reference to the other work I do. It could be handled by any modern laptop. Lightroom is another story.

As far as a new platform goes. I was for OS 9 to OS X and there for Power PC to Intel. I know the developers have to jump through hoops. And I believe the M1 version of Lightroom may be better than what I’m using on the intel side.

It boils down to this: if you are the most basic user that uses a macbook to watch netflix and view websites, then YES - return your intel mac and get an arm one.

If you are a "pro" user who needs various apps and reliability, then you would definitely want to avoid arm for a couple of years until it actually matures and everything works. Otherwise you are taking a huge risk and pay to be a beta tester, quite literally.

A bunch of stuff is not working or buggy in Big Sur. In fact, I completely advise against updating BigSur if you are on Intel macs. You will gain absolutely nothing out of big sur besides a huge list of potential problems. AND you also become an unpaid beta tester for Apple. You would be testing the problems of big sur on Intel macs.

Considering how Apple completely refused to fix the biggest existing bug in Catalina and just released that on BigSur, it is obvious they care little or not at all for backwards compatibility and support of previous systems. Take that as you will. I am never going to update to BigSur on my intel mbp.

You do have a point there. I received the box today, and will let it sit unopened until I made up my mind. On one hand, I know what I will get, on the other hand, the performance and battery life of the new chips is amazing…
