Yes, and I wish Casio would collaborate with Apple to make a Watch as tough as a G-Shock. Never going to happen. ?

Yeah, I agree with you. Due to the swiping from the edges, it would be impossible to design a raised lip to protect the screen.

Dumb watches don’t have touchscreens so that allows for a nice beefy lip to protect the glass.

Maybe they will introduce a round version with a circular display at some point. That would get me to upgrading maybe. But the UI would have to be totally redesigned I guess, so maybe not.

Similar look, slimmer casing, same band compatibility is my bet. Faster charging too.

If they go slimmer, short of a revolution in battery design, the fabled multiple day battery life Watch w/ native sleep tracking is years away. The only way I foresee around this in the short term is much faster charging, charge while showering and it’s quickly back to 80%+. Of course, heat and battery health are at risk but that’s there problem to address and balance.

Of course, I’d like something more than this, some innovation, more sensors etc, the above are the bare minimum and pretty obvious, incremental improvements.

Only thing that would convince me to upgrade is a compelling new health tracking feature, e.g., native sleep tracking.

A slimmer casing would also be nice. The current watch is a tad too bulky. Need improved batteries and/or lower processing power, however.

I never really liked round screens on Galaxy watches myself. My Watch reminds me of my beloved Gear 2 watch I was fond of in 2013. I'd still use the Gear 2 (I still have it as a backup) if it offered NFC payments, and had the ability to connect to Bluetooth headsets. watch is a closer more modern upgrade from it though. No IR Blaster but Remote and Roku app both allow TV controls. No camera but who needs it on a watch? I just wish Watch just had one button, instead of a button and crown. the Gear 2 only had one button that functioned like the Nokia Navi Key. It powered on/off, was the home/back button, enabled voice control, brought up recent apps, and put display to sleep. The crown is just an extra redundancy, and I'm worried if it hits something the wrong way it'll pop off and go bouncing somewhere.

I'm doubtful on a redesign. If anything, they go to microled displayed but I'm not even sold on that for 2020.

MicroLed wouldn’t constitute a ‘redesign’ in that regard, that’s more of a technological change. (Also, There are massive leaps with Microled technology, with a higher brightness, improved color gamut, and it also significantly draws less power <—which would result in more battery life, that alone is a significant upgrade.)

Apple has made it very clear that they’re probably keeping the current square design they have now, as the only real consideration to be a ‘redesign’ would be if they had a circular Apple Watch, which isn’t happening.

I didn’t mean to imply that I would consider microled a redesign. Only that that would be the only big change I can see them making for series 6.

But I disagree that going round would be the only way we can consider the watch as being redesigned. Series 3 to 4 was very much a redesign. I’m sure when they finally do go microled we’ll get a smaller form factor due to the energy savings.

Series 3 to 4 was very much a redesign.

It wasn’t a redesign, essentially Apple increased the display size, but a redesign it was not. It was more of a ‘mid-grade’ tweak is how I would classify it. And, the orientation of the digital crown, power button, casing dimensions are all exactly the same, except larger.

If you want a prime example of a redesign from Apple, that would be the transition away from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X, which included face ID, reduced bezels, change of aesthetics with the stainless/glass, etc.

I suppose 4S to 5 wasn’t a redesign either.

I gave you the perfect example of what a redesign was from the 8—>X as a transitional phase, the Apple Watch Series 4 was _not_ a redesign and it shouldn’t be compared, because it’s not appropriate. All they did was increase the display size, and you call that a redesign? It’s essentially a larger version of the Series 3, that’s it.

I guess I don’t understand how putting a bigger screen in a different case isn’t a redesign. Ask the engineers that made it if it was redesign. You’re just being obtuse.

Bolded= I agree, you don’t obviously. 😁

I think this discussion is exhausted. I made my point how your interpretation of what a ‘redesign’ is not accurate. A larger display doesn’t constitute a redesign. A redesign would be to the chassis, design and orientation to the placement of controls/buttons, ect.

It’s literally a different chassis lol

Nice strawman. Why is that difficult for you to admit you posted something inaccurate? It’s just a simple discussion

But anyways....

The orientation of the Digital Crown, power button is all the same in a larger format. It doesn’t add/subtract any new physicalities aside from thickness/speaker symmetry/placement.

Just to help you a bit:

A redesign would be say..... if Apple releases a round design of the Apple Watch using a similar U.I perhaps eight different variations of hardware. that would be an example of a redesign.

For some reason, it bothers you when another member called you out on something you posted as inaccurate? Why is that difficult for you to admit?

Imagine looking at a series 3 and series 4 Apple Watch and saying they look the same. You’re hilarious dude.

I challenge you to actually to research in this very Apple Watch forum, there are members (In a specific thread) who couldn’t even differentiate the Series 3 from the Series 4, aside from it having a larger display on the wrist. You can keep throwing strawman deflections, it doesn’t change what you posted was inaccurate what a redesign is.

Thanks for the discussion.

“If we couldn’t see the most obvious difference we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.”

Keep living in your fairy tale world where everything you say is right because you say so. :) What a clown making up your own definition and then trying to pass it off as truth.

Maybe you should tell Apple they’re using the word wrong. Unbelievable. Later dude.

Now that the "Round vs. Square", and "is an increase in size actually a redesign" arguments have been pounded into the earth, does anyone have any other ideas as to what would justify another $4-500 on a "new" Apple Watch? Certainly, after the 4 vs. 5 fiasco, and it's lack of new features, do we expect Apple to continue down this path, or does anyone think there will be something actually worthwhile to make the "new" (Series 6) watch stand out, and make folks want to drop the big bucks for the vast new improvements? We've seen the "sleep tracking" argument, but that's easily, and quite handily handled by 3rd party apps, but what else would make YOU upgrade from your series 4 or 5?

Yeah, my only real complaint with my S4 is battery life, very occasional hitches/slowdowns, and bulk, and those are contradictory requests. Ultimately I think I'd rather have the thinner case versus added battery just because I don't think we're anywhere close to multi-day battery life under heavy usage even if Apple kept the casing the same.

As to the aesthetics, Apple ain't making a chonky watch any time soon, and the idea that a giant watch is "manlier" strikes me as outdated and certainly out of step with Apple's aesthetic and technological priorities.

It's possible we'd see a redesign closer to their other products, but they aren't gonna' make a miniature iPad Pro to strap to your wrist.

I found the AOD a rather significant feature for the S5. It was significant enough for me, that I upgraded after only having the S4 for 7 months.

So if the iphone is getting a boxy flat edge design, could the Apple watch follow the same design language?
I greatly doubt it. The use-case for a phone is very different to the use-case for a watch. Your watch is on your wrist. You will want to slip pullovers, jackets and coats on and off in regular use while wearing your watch. A squared off design would make that less comfortable, with the square edge catching on your clothes.

Similarly, you gesticulate with your arms, swing them whilst walking, reach through things and so on. A squared off design would be more likely to catch on stuff, potentially damaging your watch, the thing caught on, plus yourself if the watch is yanked against your wrist. A smooth or curved design in far superior for a watch.

There are potential benefits for the phone to have a square-off design, primarily in supporting adoption of USB-C. In my opinion the two drivers to the squared off shape of the iPad Pro is USB-C and the magnetic charging point for the second gen pencil. I think the iPhone will go USB-C when they move to a flat side, or very soon after. I’m not sure the iPhone will get pencil support (unless they make a smaller pencil to go with the Pro Max) so charging wouldn’t be a factor. But, clearly neither is going to be applicable to the Watch.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was no update this year. They are supposedly bringing out a product Red version here in the next few weeks and it doesn’t really make sense to release that the same year as a new model. Could be totally wrong but just a thought.
