Like some people here I do find the iPad desirable and I would love one for home BUT it is not something I would carry around.

1) I am looking for the smallest size possible where reading is still convenient: therefore a 7" ipad, something that simulates the size of a paperback book.

2) I don't want something too pretentious or conspicuous in public. I don't want to pull out the ipad every time I want to change music.

3) I want to be able to thumb-type.

4) I want something that fits in a purse or a coat pocket.

That is why (and there are more reasons) that I want a smaller iPad.

At 7", it's too big to put in many pockets, just like the current iPad. Unless you wear cargo pants all the time.

Personal opinion - some people think that the current model is too small for reading, some are fine with an iPhone.

Anything with the :apple: will be classed as pretentious, and therefore conspicuous.

3) I want to be able to thumb-type.

I can do that on the iPad (and I don't have freakishly large hands - I wear men's gloves in a size large). But if an iPad is too small, you could always thum-type on an iPhone/iPod Touch. No need for a new device.

4) I want something that fits in a purse or a coat pocket.

Yeah, um, as I mentioned, a 7" iPad is just a go-between and will fit as many pockets as it won't - it all depends on the size of the pocket you have. I couldn't fit a 7" device in any of my coats, but I could fit a 27" iMac (and the ****ing house) into my fiancees "purse"*

*in this context, purse is synonymous with brand name duffle bag.

This sounds like a rumor Samsung would invent.

Let's say, in devising their tablet, they came across problem after problem trying to produce a product that competed with the iPad, and offered extra incentive features like cameras or ports. They realised that if they reduced the size of their device from 10" to 7" they could alleviate quite a lot of these problems. Not all, but enough to market it. They're then forced to create a smaller device than the one which has basically reinvented/ invented the market for modern, useable tablets. When people think of tablets, they think of the iPad, and if Samsung's product was to be smaller it might not fair so well in comparison. People might not see it as a tablet at all. They might see it as some strange in-between device, and they'd be better off just using their phone for all the same functions or get "a real tablet, like the iPad". The same things people were saying about the iPad itself but Apple's good enough to invent a market and Samsung may not believe they are. So to legitimise the form factor, Samsung spreads a rumour that the market leader was producing a tablet just like theirs. Not only does this help the product find a space in the market, based off the endorsement of Apple's fabricated intentions, but this product is available a full x amount of months before Apple's impending, non-existent version.
