biteSMS will give you individual ringtones for each contact you have. ToneFXs will allow you to make/select a custom ringtone. Both cost a bit, both work well, your choice as to how you proceed.

question

ToneFXs Help

So I emailed ToneFXs support two weeks ago and have yet to receive a response, so I figured I'd jump in here.

I have the full version of the app and all that jazz, and I've created custom ringtones and gotten them onto my phone properly. However, nothing seems to work for the "New Text Msg" slot.

Is there any sort of workaround for this? I have custom (standard) texts set to a few of my contacts; is that messing it up somehow? But even new random texts (like Facebook alerts) still use the default text message sound.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

ToneFXs works perfectly for me. I can download alert tones from Cydia, and they assign to wherever I choose. Then I used ToneFXS Creator, which comes with the app, to make my own tone and send it to iTunes. Then I synced the phone and was able to select that custom-made tone. I have no idea why all your other assigned tones work and you can't get one to work with new text messages. Can you assign ANY tone to it? Have you tried downloading an alert tone from Cydia and using it to see if it will work. You need to narrow down what is going on. If it were me, I'd toss the app and anything else with it (prefs, etc.), and start over. I'm guessing something is fubar'd either in the app or in your phone. Start with the app.

biteSMS is easy. Open the app, open setting (the little gear on the upper right), scroll down to Ringtones, turn on Take Control, click Edit (upper right), click the + in the upper left, choose your contact, choose your ringtone. I custom-made mine (my voice saying, "I have a text from < >") and uploaded them. But picking rings here is as easy as with the phone itself. You just..... pick them.

Bitesms custom ringtones

?... on biteSMS- exactly how do u do it...i have this app on my phone but i never new u could give individuals ringtones

Hi!

Open the bitesms app and click the settings button in the top right hand corner. Scroll down to ringtones and select. Click edit in the top right hand corner, click the plus in the top left hand corner and your contacts will appear. Select a name, and a number and that will take you to the ringtones page.

Hope that helps!

Hey maybe I'm way out of my league here but I want to change the terrible tones as well. I'm somewhat of a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff but does anyone know of a way to "SSH" into my phone on a mac? The program that has been mentioned so far seems to be just for windows.

If I understand this correctly (which i certainly may not) can I just use any FTP client?
Also, does my iPhone have to be jailbroken to do this?

Thanks!!!

On a Mac use cyberduck. Seems to be the most popular tool for SSH'ng into your iPhone.

is there another way to get ringetones for texts b/c on my bitesms under feature i have everything but ringtones, i even tried updating my app (thinkin that would help :/ as if i had an older version of bitesms) but still no ringetones under my settings, so is there another way i cud get ringetones for txts

i am having trouble logging into winscp it is saying that connection is refused kan somebody help me wat kould be the problem

I just got an Iphone 4 4.3.3

I got through most of the instructions: Jailbroke the phone using cydia, got open ssh, got cyberduck, made the connection, made my ringtones and renamed sms-received1.caf, found the UISounds folder, dropped and replaced the tones.

But when I go to text tones and try to use my tone there is no sound.

Ok, heres what you do, sftp into your phone go to-
System

Library

Audio

UIsounds

now scroll down to where you see sms-received1.caf thru sms-received6.caf these are your stock sms tones! And to answer your question you will rename YOUR sms tones to sms-received1.caf and so on, for example:

"Godfather.mp3", you will need to convert this with an audio converter such as "Switch Audio Converter",to "Godfather.aiff", then after that, you rename it "sms-received1.caf", then you replace the original one with this one by dragging it over to the original one and copying it, a window will pop-up saying "do you want to replace this file", just click yes!!! But when you look in your phone, by going to Settings - Sounds - New Text Message, you will still see your stock sms tone names ie: Tri-tone, Chime, etc., so just listen to them 1 by 1 to see which is which !! You can also do this to any file that has a .caf extension like new-mail.caf,sent-mail.caf and even the dialing numbers of the dialer. Sorry if this not quite "direct-to-the-point" but i'm really better at showing then explaining... Anyway, just post-up again if you have anymore questions. Good luck mate..
:)

Hey dude i have an iphone 3GS and im having some big trouble following along with this.... could you please post some step by step, specific instructions for this, pleaaaase? Thanks

ok when you open up winSCP, you will get a login box..

in the host name type your iphones IP address, then in the username type in root, and in the password you type alpine. please note that your iphone has to be connected via wifi for this to work.

the very first time you go to log in it will take abit longer, and it will give u an error msg then ask you if you still want to connect, click YES or OK.

then it will log into your iphone.

on the left handside will be the folder available in your phone, you can also access them by double clicking on the folder in the right hand side too.

then all you need to do is navigate to the UISOUNDS folder and copy and paste the files you want to replace etc.. its important that you backup any files you replace if you change your mind later on etc. just copy the backed up files to your pc or something.

hey, whenever i try to click login, it just says error and Connection Refused.... i put the wifi IP adress in the host name, put root as the User Name, and alpine as the Password.... whats wrong?

wow, cant believe im still subscribed to this thread 3 years later, I have not been using an iphone since it came out.

just last week i hopped into an iphone4 and wanted to see if all this stuff still works and I can confirm it does, not bad for being out of the loop all this time.

ive managed to make my own ringtones, set up the sms tones and even replaced the dialling numbers with talking ones lolz.

i use winscp to ssh into my phone.. the host name is the ip of ur iphone , not the ip of your router. so go into the iphone then SETTINGS, WI-FI then find ur wireless network and tap on that blue circle icon to reveal the IP of ur iphone.

put that ip into the host name and then in the user put root and the password is alpine, it will log you in.

next is to convert the sound you want for the sms tone, download SWITCH AUDIO CONVERTER and then output the file as AIFF, select the song and then convert. Rename the output file to sms-received1.caf all the way up to 6.caf depending if you want to replace 1 through to 6 of the tones.

then ssh into the phone and head over to the /SYSTEM/LIBRARY/AUDIO/UISOUNDS and then replace the files you want to change. * make sure you back these original sound files onto ur pc first in case you stuff it up*
i think the trick is to convert a short file as the tone, i find sound effect files are good or a 5-10sec file will do the trick.

this worked for me 3yrs ago on my iphone2g and now on my iphone4.

goodluck.

oh i recommend everyone try the talking numbers as the dialler, awesome.. the only thing is to download each talking number one by one, there are websites that will convert text to voice, then using the same method as the sms tone u replace the dtmf-1, 2, 3, 4 etc dont forget to replace the hash and star buttons and by the time u are done u have a talking keypad.

here is the site if you wanted to give it a go.

http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php

just type the numbers and download em individually, type in hash and star as well.

have fun

Didn't go through all 7 pages, but quick question:

Is there an easy way to use a Voice Memo as a custom text ringtone? ToneFX do this? I have an awesome voice memo of my two year old saying 'do work, son!' which would be awesome to use when I get a text from my wife.

as long as its a valid sound file that can be converted with SWITCH and its short then sure it will work

Apple Solved the problem

You don't have to jailbreak your iPhone 4 to get a different text tone. Just update the iPhone in iTunes and you will have some new apps and stuff. Just load on your .m4r ringtone file (just drag it into iTunes) and sinc it onto your phone.

message

much easier to drag song from where ever to downloaded it to, to your desk top. from there click on song where u can change the name, at the end of song put m4r it will ask do u want to use m4r put yes, u must have iTunes, then double click the song it will put it in your tones, then just sync your phone. :D

This thread helped me a lot but I think there is way of doing it via iFile by copying files from one place to other. It would be nice if someone post it here

Easy way to make custom "Text" tones

hi

i have transferred a few custom ringtones to my iphone and i can select it no problem for the incoming call ringtone but what i need to know is how i set a custom ringtone for my text message alert?

does anyone know how i can set this?

Many Thanks

I've learned that if the tone is long it will not appear in the text tones for u to choose as a text message tone. In order for this tone to show up under text tones it must be shorter than 30 seconds. The longest ive tried out was 16 secs and have not tried a longer tone. So just give it a try and shorten your custom tone down to about 15 secs and once u add them to ur iphone they will appear where u can choose them for a text tone and not just as a ringtone.
Hope this helps:p
