yop,

if you have a mac:apple: you can use iphone browser software like "phone disk",
also if you are unable to delete or overwrite the ringtone on the iphone,
make sure you don't only rename the file extension but also change the "open with" (from iTunes to Quicktime) on the file information of your custom ringtone, and voila you're done https://forums.macrumors.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

hope it helps

I want to assume that this method of changing your sms tones still works with iOS 4?

And can anyone recommend a lightweight mp3 -> aiff converter for osx? Thanks. :)

File type converter

The easiest way I convert between file types is to use iTunes. Open iTunes/preferences/general/import settings

Here you choose the file type. Then go back to your library and right click the file and you will see it says "convert to file type"

Unfortunately the easy answer: You can't.

You need to jailbreak your iPhone to change text tones and currently you can't jailbreak an iPhone4.

It can be done with iTunes or there are conversion apps also.

It's all covered in this thread.

Hi

I use Tranmit on mac to SSH into my phone using the root and my password which is alpine and my ip is, just kidding. but yea I have permission by default when using this program and logging in using root. Try that if you have a mac and let me know how it works out.

Thanks

hi there!! i have a question, hope you guys can help me!!

i have changed the ringtone of my alert of new sms.. in this step no problem.. but now that new ringtone i chose is too louder.... i searched for some way to put that volume down, but i don't know how to do it.. i don't want to put the "master volume" down, just to get someaway to put that specific ringtone lower...

anyone could help me here please??

i would like the song by jason derulo called "text" converted please..

reply here or email if you like luke_stidham@live.com

thanks!!!!

Any way to set a custom ringtone to a particular contact?

Yes. Just go to the contact in your contacts folder, and right below the number is the option to select ringtone. It is normally on the default ringtone, but you can change to whichever custom one you want once uploaded.

Confused

twonga ur a champion, i followed your instructions and it worked great, now to get 5 more worthy sms tones to use. I backed up the original caf files on my pc just in case something went wrong.

to the poster who lost his/her original sms tone, email me or post a reply and i will email you the one you are missing.. just SSH it back into the folder.

i used WinSCP to SSH into my iphone, you can easily google that. grab the IP of your iphone by checking out the wi-fi settings, then enter that in along with root/alpine as the login/password.

then navigate to SYSTEM, LIBRARY, AUDIO, UISOUNDS and follow the previous posts to get the custom sms tones.

great job

ok plz help as i dont understand what im doing wrong.........
i have my ip for phone, i place that where 'Host Name' is........'root' in username and 'alpine' for password........
am i doing it wrong altogether? what should i be doing

Ok, heres what you do, sftp into your phone go to-
System

Library

Audio

UIsounds

now scroll down to where you see sms-received1.caf thru sms-received6.caf these are your stock sms tones! And to answer your question you will rename YOUR sms tones to sms-received1.caf and so on, for example:

"Godfather.mp3", you will need to convert this with an audio converter such as "Switch Audio Converter",to "Godfather.aiff", then after that, you rename it "sms-received1.caf", then you replace the original one with this one by dragging it over to the original one and copying it, a window will pop-up saying "do you want to replace this file", just click yes!!! But when you look in your phone, by going to Settings - Sounds - New Text Message, you will still see your stock sms tone names ie: Tri-tone, Chime, etc., so just listen to them 1 by 1 to see which is which !! You can also do this to any file that has a .caf extension like new-mail.caf,sent-mail.caf and even the dialing numbers of the dialer. Sorry if this not quite "direct-to-the-point" but i'm really better at showing then explaining... Anyway, just post-up again if you have anymore questions. Good luck mate..
:)

this may seem like a duhh questionn but can you please help me with how you get to the system thing

didn't feel like starting a new thread so i'm just gonna bump this one

i ssh'd the .aiff now renamed .caf into the directory and resprung my 3gs, i select the file on my phone and it's silent, obviously it registered cause it's not the default sounds, but it doesn't play. i played the caf file using quicktime on my mac and it's exactly as how i would like it. i skimmed the last six pages so i may have missed it, any ideas?

EDIT: nvm, it's cause i renamed the mp3s into caf instead of the aiff....crack is a helluva drug kids

You don't have to delete it. You could save the original from your phone to your laptop to keep as a backup and just drag in the new ringtone you want. It'll overwrite it, and you don't have to worryt about renaming anything.
