I'm guessing this was a typo and you can't convert? If so, no conversion necessary, just rename the file extension. :)

Custom tone for USB sync

Hey I have been able to change the sms text received tone in the iphone but when I use the WinSCP program, how do i change the tone for when i plug my phone into my computer or wen i plug it into my charger. I hope you guyz know which tone i'm talking bout its the pretty high pitched one when you plug it in and it goes to the battery screen. I just wanna know where to locate that caf file in the system of the iphone in WinSCP so i can swap it with my own caf sound. Please let me know thanx!

That is incorrect!! you can install custom sms tones into the iphone, but you need to SSH into your phone and change them there! You wont be able to change the name of the original ones i.e. tri-tone;chime etc. So what you need to do is choose whatever sms tone you like doesn't matter how long it is, convert it to .aif or .aiff then rename the extension .caf!!!! But here's the catch, you will also need to change the name of your tone to "sms-received1.caf" and you can only put 6 tones in the phone because you only have 6 tones to choose from in "settings". I have changed all 6 of mine, the best one being "excuse me boss you have a text message"!!! you can also make the dialer say the number you are tapping instead of the boring stock one, and you can also change the mail tone, I myself have the "You've got mail" tone. So yes, you can do all these things and more, you just need to know how to ssh into your iphone... And I do believe there is an app in installer that automatically does this but I have no need to try it out. Good luck .....!!!

Ok so I guess Im like technology illiterate when it comes to this iphone but I dont understand where exactly i find this system on my phone to change the name of the files to have them as custom sms ringtones. Help please?

System/Library/Audio/UISounds/

You will see six .caf files in there called sms-received1.caf thru sms-received6.caf. You need to replace these .caf files with your own .caf files. In order for you to get your .mp3 to a .caf file, you will need to do a little conversion

Renaming alone will not do it with an MP3. conversion is necessary.

CAF is a renamed AIFF file (*.aif). AIFF is an uncompressed file (like a .WAV file).

iTunes can convert any file imported into an AIFF if you go into preferences/general/importing and select the AIFF encoder. Then just rename the file to the proper *.caf file you want to replace and SSH it to the phone.

This is all the info to do what you are requesting. If you don't understand this, get Google fired up and do some reading.

Ok, heres what you do, sftp into your phone go to-
System

Library

Audio

UIsounds

now scroll down to where you see sms-received1.caf thru sms-received6.caf these are your stock sms tones! And to answer your question you will rename YOUR sms tones to sms-received1.caf and so on, for example:

"Godfather.mp3", you will need to convert this with an audio converter such as "Switch Audio Converter",to "Godfather.aiff", then after that, you rename it "sms-received1.caf", then you replace the original one with this one by dragging it over to the original one and copying it, a window will pop-up saying "do you want to replace this file", just click yes!!! But when you look in your phone, by going to Settings - Sounds - New Text Message, you will still see your stock sms tone names ie: Tri-tone, Chime, etc., so just listen to them 1 by 1 to see which is which !! You can also do this to any file that has a .caf extension like new-mail.caf,sent-mail.caf and even the dialing numbers of the dialer. Sorry if this not quite "direct-to-the-point" but i'm really better at showing then explaining... Anyway, just post-up again if you have anymore questions. Good luck mate..

Hi I'm a new member and have spent all day reading and following this post in order to create a custom ringtone.

I have done everything correctly using SSH/WSP, sound converter and got my new ringtone over to the correct location. However, in /System/Library/Audio/UISounds I have the following entries: 1). the original sms-received1.caf
and 2). the version I created - sms-received1.caf.aiff via sound converter. Then, when I rename 2). above by deleting ".aiff" the system asks if I want to replace it and I hit yes a system generated message box appears "General failure (server should provide error description).
Error code: 4
Error message from server: Failure
Request code: 18" leaving me with the options of abort/retry/skip/help.

What the hell am I doing wrong?????

By the way, my Iphone is 3.1.2 jailbroken with Cydia.

You need to backup the original sounds then delete them of just overwrite them via SSH. All the sounds except ringtones are .caf files (not .caf.aif) iPhone won't read anything but .caf

Ringtones are .m4r
All other tones in iPhone are .caf

Use Google if the intructions above are not sufficient. I outlined how to convert sounds to .caf. Rington conversions are even easier.

Looks like you are trying to name the file as a file that alreay exists. Before changing any default Apple files, I would either back them up or delete them. :)

all i really want is the "unlock" sound to be the communicator sound from the TOS Star Trek instead of that silly shutter sound....

and not to have to jb.

/sigh

I'm afraid you need to jailbreak in order to change the sounds. While I can't tell you for sure which file you need to change, logic would dictate the file you want would be in the same location, have a .caf extension and the same contents as any .aiff file would. You should probably just copy all .caf files to your computer, change the extension to .aiff, try them all and identify the one you want.

You know, your idea is pretty neat. I'll have to try it out myself, even if not necessarily with the same sound.

Good luck.

hi

i have transferred a few custom ringtones to my iphone and i can select it no problem for the incoming call ringtone but what i need to know is how i set a custom ringtone for my text message alert?

does anyone know how i can set this?

Many Thanks

I am experimenting with this, too. It looks like I found some helpful information on YouTube.com. Type in Make Custom IPHONE SMS text message (in the search box). Hope this helps!

Anyone can help? I have followed the various information from here and the internet and i am still getting a problem. I have backed up the ones i am overwriting as a spare. I make the new file and convert it to .aiff or .m4a and change it to a .caf using windows exporer. I then name it the same as the one in the folder, delete the one from the iphone and copy it accross. Now once done i restart the phone and try it, i get no sound at all. I put the origonal back and the origonal plays. So i am a little stuck. I have tried playing the .aiff/.m4a/caf in VLC and it plays with sound so i am unsure what the problem is?

Obviously, you are not making the .aif file correctly. I posted an easy method using iTunes. It's a few posts up.

Hi, alittle extra help needed

I just got the newest iPhone and was having some trouble finding my iPhone's IP address to be able to access it using the WinSCP program, and I was wondering if you guys could help me out?

Settings / WiFi / Click on the circled arrow located all the way to the right on the same line of the network you're using / First line of DHCP is your IP Address

@tibby595 ?

@tibby595 I know you said you jailbroke yours using cydia, but is there a way to do it without buying an app?
