>_<

sorry for being a noob...but i've have no experience in FTP before...i downloaded the WinSCP and i have no idea how to use it...after i installed the program it ask me for hostname and username and password...may i ask how or where i can obtain those...and where can i find the area/window which i can search for the /System/library/audio/UIsound...cuz after installation, the window that opened looked something like a configuration window and not a directory tree window

thx so much for the help

ok when you open up winSCP, you will get a login box..

in the host name type your iphones IP address, then in the username type in root, and in the password you type alpine. please note that your iphone has to be connected via wifi for this to work.

the very first time you go to log in it will take abit longer, and it will give u an error msg then ask you if you still want to connect, click YES or OK.

then it will log into your iphone.

on the left handside will be the folder available in your phone, you can also access them by double clicking on the folder in the right hand side too.

then all you need to do is navigate to the UISOUNDS folder and copy and paste the files you want to replace etc.. its important that you backup any files you replace if you change your mind later on etc. just copy the backed up files to your pc or something.

Sorry for the noob questions again, but I seem to be doing something wrong.

I just recently jailbroke my iPhone with iLiberty+
I downloaded WinSCP and am entering the correct IP for my phone (Settings > Wifi > Right arrow > IP) and trying to login with username Root and password alpine and it gives me the error;

Network Error: Connection timed out,

Then I'm prompted with an OK and a Reconnect button, and I try to reconnect with no avail.

Anyone possibly know what I'm doing wrong??

ok well i hope you mistyped Root, because it should be root.

please double check your wifi ip.. apart from that im not sure why you are not connecting.. is your iphone connected to the wifi network at your place?

Thanks for tips,I did all of the steps you kindly explained, Ialso use Winscp to ssh into my iphone, but after I drag my own tone to tritone ie:sms-received1.caf when I go to play my tone on iphone,it does not play!

My problem is a bit different. I did as per your instructions, installed SSH clinet and BSD Subsystem, then used WinSCP to replace the tri-tone with my custom tone. That went absolutely fine, but then I noticed my custom ringtone had been changed back to Marimba. When I tried to change the ringtone for calls, not only were my custom ringtones (uploaded with iTunes) nowhere to be found, but also I couldn't change the ringtone at all, it always went back to Marimba. After that, as soon as I restarted my phone, it showed a tip concerning the arrangement of icons on my home menu, prompted me to unlock my SIM (as usual), then showem me the "buffering icon" (you know, the little wheel made of small bars that fade in and out in sequence) and went through the mothins again, always dumping me back to my home screen and not letting me do anything at all. I fixed it, then tried it again and got the same problem. What am I doing wrong? I'm running firmware version 1.1.4 on an unlocked iPhone. Would greatly appreciate your help!

Weird...

It seems that changing the message tone first, *then* uploading the custom call ringtone makes everything just merrily go in place... Either that or deleting the original message tone file first, instead of overwriting.

Oh, and regarding people with "empty" custom message tones, I don't know how helpful this is going to be, but I'll leave it here anyway:

Some years ago, I was trying to put a WAV file into my HTC to make it a custom ringtone and kept getting exactly the same as you guys. Turns out the quality settings for the WAV I was uploading were all wrong. Now, the iPhone is quite the superb media player, so it should have hardly any problems with sound quality being too great, but you might want to try dialing it back a notch, see if that works. Just a thought...

First Three .caf text messages

I meant to back up the first three ORIGINAL sms-received.caf text sounds on my computer but forgot. Can someone Please send me those three files please?

Please send me those files too, please (imfhunt@yahoo.com). I still can't get my custom sms tones to play once I replace the originals. None of the previous posts has solved my problem. Thanks.

ive had my iphone since december but im not very computer savvy, so ive never even attempted jailbreaking my phone or anything. i have at&t so its not like i needed to unlock it or anything...anyway, is there anyway that i can get new ringtones for sms without jailbreaking or whatever you want to call it...you know just with the phone as is and my laptops...

thank you! <3 sarah

Help finding WinSCP equivalent for mac

twonga ur a champion, i followed your instructions and it worked great, now to get 5 more worthy sms tones to use. I backed up the original caf files on my pc just in case something went wrong.

to the poster who lost his/her original sms tone, email me or post a reply and i will email you the one you are missing.. just SSH it back into the folder.

i used WinSCP to SSH into my iphone, you can easily google that. grab the IP of your iphone by checking out the wi-fi settings, then enter that in along with root/alpine as the login/password.

then navigate to SYSTEM, LIBRARY, AUDIO, UISOUNDS and follow the previous posts to get the custom sms tones.

great job

Hey maybe I'm way out of my league here but I want to change the terrible tones as well. I'm somewhat of a noob when it comes to this kind of stuff but does anyone know of a way to "SSH" into my phone on a mac? The program that has been mentioned so far seems to be just for windows.

If I understand this correctly (which i certainly may not) can I just use any FTP client?
Also, does my iPhone have to be jailbroken to do this?

Thanks!!!

custom tones not playing

Convert your custom sms to aiff with a program called switch,Just google it,it's free.
When I was converting with itunes they would'nt play, but when i converted with Switch ,no problem!
After aiff convert to m4r and rename .caf as usual.
Good luck!

Iphone ip address

Hello all,
How do I find my Iphone's ip address? I'm trying to make custom text message ringtones so I just downloaded winSCP. Could someone offer alittle help. Thankx!

Check under "Settings>Wi-Fi", then expand the properties of the network you're connected to, you should see it. It would probably be easier to assign your iPhone a static IP, but that's up to choice.

Good luck.

This may be a dumb question

Do you have to unlock the phone to change these or do you jus do the app installer....

If someone has a tutorial or would like to put the necessary steps into a list

i dont even know what SFTP means

like everyone else here, i wanan change me sms tones for my iphone but everyone keeps saying to "sftp into the phone" and i dont even know where to start going about that. i downloaded cyberduck since i have a mac but idk where to go from there at all. the song i want to change is shortened, converted to .aiif and changed to sms-recieved1.caf i just need to know where to go from here.

HELP

That is incorrect!! you can install custom sms tones into the iphone, but you need to SSH into your phone and change them there! You wont be able to change the name of the original ones i.e. tri-tone;chime etc. So what you need to do is choose whatever sms tone you like doesn't matter how long it is, convert it to .aif or .aiff then rename the extension .caf!!!! But here's the catch, you will also need to change the name of your tone to "sms-received1.caf" and you can only put 6 tones in the phone because you only have 6 tones to choose from in "settings". I have changed all 6 of mine, the best one being "excuse me boss you have a text message"!!! you can also make the dialer say the number you are tapping instead of the boring stock one, and you can also change the mail tone, I myself have the "You've got mail" tone. So yes, you can do all these things and more, you just need to know how to ssh into your iphone... And I do believe there is an app in installer that automatically does this but I have no need to try it out. Good luck .....!!!

if you dont mind could u give me a lil more info maybe a lil guide or something on how to do this my aim is t r e y p o u n d05 not spaced out tho altogether i really wanna know how to do this

You don't need it unlocked. You do need it jailbreaked, and then you have to install openssh, because I don't think pwnage does it automatically. That's different than it was before. Also not 100% sure it even works on 2.0.x phones. I might try it tonight.

EDIT: Sigh, I forgot, I didn't put cydia on my iPhone when I pwn'd 2.0.1... I don't think you can get openssh via installer.app right now, so I'm out of playing with this for now.

If you can't spell acronyms correctly, and you don't know what sftp and ssh are, you may seriously want to consider the perspective that this isn't the hack for you...

EDIT2: Here's some info confirming that it worked at least on 2.0... http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/file-mods/258911-upload-sms-ringtones-2-0-pwn.html

Does anyone know if there is a size limit on these SMS tones? I tried taking a 8-9 second mp3 clip and convert it to .aiff then renaming to .caf and it comes up at 1.8 MB. I dropped it in as sms-received1.caf and when I tried it on the phone it is silent. The mp3 was 128 kbps, so nothing too high quality. I don't know why it was that big.

I just replaced the original back in there to get my Tri Tone sound back for now.

So, I converted the file to .aiif and then renamed it sms-received2.caf. I then SSHed into my phone using Cyberdock and got to the correct folder and dragged it over the file. It placed it in another folder for some reason but then I just carried that into the UISounds folder but it says, AN ERROR OCCURRED, BUT NO SPECIFIC ERROR CODE EXISTS TO DESCRIBE THE FAILURE. It said it CANNOT RENAME FILE?? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?!?!

I'm having trouble myself.

I renamed my custom sms tone I made to sms-received1.caf and replaced it via SSH.

Now my Tri-Tone doesn't make any noise when I click on it?

What did I do wrong?
