Can confirm any traces of image retention are 100% gone instantly after installing the 17.1 RC on my 15 Pro Max.

Don’t know what the issue was, but Apple once again did their magic. 🥰

It would have been great if their software hadn’t caused this issue in the first place tbh, but yeah I’m glad this is sorted for folks experiencing the problem.

Until last night I never noticed a “burn in,” ghosting or image retention issue on my 15PM. While watching an episode of Changeling on the Apple TV app, that has very dark scenes, I noticed them ghosting keys and other various artifacts all over the screen. (Note: I was watching in a dark room with brightness about half). The artifacts on the screen were so distracting I couldn’t watch the show since it looked so weird. Naturally I decided to check the forums and when upon getting to the recent posts saw 17.1 fixed it for some. I just downloaded 17.1 rc and it appears all of the ghosting/artifacts are gone 🤞.

I'll update my original post in hopes of helping others reach that conclusion sooner.

Has this burn-in issue been completely fixed?

Some said that it is an image retention issue which could be fixed in software but others said it is a hardware burn-in issue which cannot be fixed. So which is which?

It was fixed with one of the first updates after the phone was released, it's not a problem anymore.

Thanks. So it was image retention issue. Do iPhone users with OLED screen need to worry about the real burn-in issue that may surface later?

How about the overhead issue? Considering iPhone 15 or 15 Plus.

I got an iPhone 15 Pro in late October, I have had 0 issues with the screen or "burn-in".

I have never heard of image retention on an OLED screen before, this was very odd to me. Other people report it from time to time but I think it must have been a glitch in the software itself causing the screen to show something -- OLED is either on or off, not a variation (as I understand it).

Doubt it. The "burn in" fears from back in 2018 on phones is pretty much eliminated unless you just get a very unlucky faulty one OR you leave your screen on at full brightness on YouTube or Google Maps all day long.

I have never had burn in on any phone since 2018, and I'm a hobbyist and had about 15 phones during this time, with thousands of hours of use.

LG has ways to help reduce the risk of burn in on their TV. For example, pixel shifting, some sort of self repairing, etc. Does Apple provide similar programs for iPhone users?

Not user accessible. But there have to be some processes going on in the background as there are near zero complaints about burn in of iPhone OLED screens since the iPhone X.
I am still using my launch day iPhone X on a regular basis and it has not even the slightest burn in, no matter how hard I am searching for some 😂

I have bad news everyone. My iPhone 15 Pro Max I have been using since December with a AOD has image burn in from the apple widgets I use and my wallpaper too. I called apple a few minutes ago and they said to bring it into a genius bar since resetting doesn't fix the problem. I was using the same wallpaper and widgets in the same locations on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and no burn in. Guess I was just unlucky.
The way to check is you take a picture of something white like a blank piece of printer paper and open the picture you took on your device and zoom in with full brightness. You will see any burn in issues and you can slowly lower the brightness to reveal more.

My Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24 Ultra don't have burn in issues yet, but they haven't been running for 5+ months with AOD like the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Pic related you can see the widgets burn in.

Actually… I can’t. Not saying there’s no burn in, but that picture isn’t the best to notice it.

It's very hard to see in the photos unfortunately but visible with eyes no problem. It's a iPhone and iWatch battery widget the small circles ones.

Okay okay, NOW I see the circles from the Lock Screen widgets. Especially if I move the image up and down.

I’m sorry, maybe Always-on display is not as great idea as we thought after all…

I wish the notification LED, so popular among the Android phones from the past decade, would be implemented in a discreet way on the iPhone.

Yeah I can see the 2nd one better with the circles. That sucks, be curious what the “genius” bar tells you.
Yes I'm wondering too honestly it's not noticable unless you're looking at something with a white background, but if it becomes worse I'm gonna get a warranty device swap and not a repair since the panels are faulty and this is rare.

Here's another pic and in this one you can make out the widgets circles better and lightly see the wallpaper burn in too lol it says PS5 near the middle of the screen. I am using a PS5 wallpaper... I'm so unlucky lol.

Yes AOD is a failure if they cannot figure out how to stop burn in issues on these OLED panels. I wonder how many more people have burn in issues and haven't noticed yet. No burn in issues on my Pixel 8 Pro or Galaxy S24 Ultra yet, but than again haven't been using the other two devices for the 5+ months I have like with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Does Apple Care+ include burn in? Can anybody please provide a list of to-do, not to-do to avoid burn in? Before purchase, I spoke with Genius and he said that it was just an iOS bug and it got fixed last Fall.

These pictures don’t show anything that I can see.
It’s in the top 1/4 of the screen and is basically two eyeballs on the phone.m

Still odd since AOD should use a dark background with low brightness making it a lot less likely for burn in. I don’t think Apple uses any type of pixel shift though similar to tvs.

Yes that's what really pisses me off is that they design widgets to be used on a AOD just to have it burn into the panel due to not being able to manage the device in a way where like you said have a pixel shift like TVs or that the dim screen during AOD standby would keep it safe. What a fail. Hopefully it's rare and just a few devices.
