what program are you guys using ?

I mainly use Procreate on iPad Pro.
When I use laptop, I also use Illustrator and Photoshop. If you're iPad Pro user and have Apple Pencil, I highly recommend to try Procreate, it's awesome drawing/digital painting app. Also if you have an app which is called Astropad, it connects your iPad to your laptop(I use MacBook Pro) by Bluetooth(or wifi?) and let you use your iPad like monitor of your laptop, you can use program on your laptop and draw on iPad. I found it's pretty useful, since I can bring my iPad within my place anywhere and can use my laptop apps on it to be creative :)

My first drawing (a pear) and my second drawing (a scene from Whistler, BC). The mountain vista isn't really complete but I got busy with other stuff and just dropped it.

Have you also tried Graphic on the iPad? Word on the street is it's sort of an Illustrator-like app. Curious what you think of it if you've tried it...

Yes, I have it on my iPad. I was using iPad mini before iPad Pro came out, and I was drawing/painting/illustrating on iPad mini with my finger. So I know how this Graphic app works. Funny thing is, I got it because I thought it works like Illustrator and there was no other app like that for iPhone/iPad by that time.

On iPad mini, I have to shrink and spread my drawing because screen is much smaller than iPad Pro. And that sometimes cause Graphic confused, stuck on the screen or when I move object it didn't go where I wanted it to be. So but frustrated when you compare of using Illustrator on laptop or desktop. Yet, I like it.
I attached My two of old illustrations I made on Graphic with my finger on iPad mini about a year or so ago.
They're JPEG files but original digital file quality is much better.

For happy Friday ; cats make me calm down and smile ;)
My latest digital cats portrait, this is my beloved Buttercup

Your artwork is amazing, and the inspiration behind my pictures, though they are nowhere near the quality of yours. Keep it up!

paint Anne Hathaway on iPad pro with Apple pencil for 4 hours.

I'm lost for words, these are seriously amazing, I'll never reach this level of skill in a million years!

dont cut yourself short. learning to copy photographs can be learned in six months to a year. its really fun. you can do it too! an artist can even trace over a photo for proportions and then paint it in for practice. if u think about it, artists are just copying reality so any method that gets results is appropriate. tracing saves allot of time for value studies. just dont let it become a crutch, draw from life or a model too. its much more difficult, but teaches allot more about drawing/painting than photocopies can. once u master copying life, u can see the shortcomings of the camera, and when u work with photos you can enhance the values and fix lens distortions. photography always looks flat compared to master paintings.

I finally have something that I'm not too embarrassed to share, and I'm absolutely loving my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. It's been almost twenty years since I last did any kind of sketching, I'd forgotten how addictive it is!

View attachment 612464

I sketched this out this morning intending it to be the basis for the final picture but each time I come back to work on it I find I'm actually quite happy with it. Funny how these things sometimes work...

20 years and you produce this!! Hats of too you mate, looks amazing for a morning sketch.

I've got the pro, downloaded procreate, received the pencil yesterday evening and still feel too intimidated to attempt a drawing. I lack any artistic ability, but hoped to learn to draw. You guys are amazing.

You gotta everything to have now :)
Just start doodling and enjoy what coming out from you, deep inside.
Looking like real or following real shapes/colors are one of talents, but that doesn't mean all paintings/drawings should be like that. Abstract is great as much as realistic, I like babies/children's drawings and think their art art amazing, because I can't draw like that anymore.
I'm not professional artist, so as you, luckily we don't need to create something else we don't want to, to live our lives.
So, don't be afraid, enjoy placing colors and shapes and shades. And see how that gonna be like, you will be surprised :)

Well, I respectfully disagree :) Illustration is a skill. It's not like it's the Force or anything - it's a skill. It's something you learn and practice. If you want to be a basketball player, even just a casual one, I don't think "just play and rely on what's coming out from you, deep inside" would be a good advice. A good advice would be: "train hard." It's not different for art. You just have to put time into it. And learn: so many tutorials online these days. Learn light and shading. Learn anatomy. Learn perspective. And practice - practice a lot. Get a little bit better every day. Eventually, the fear will wear off and you'll get better. Like everything else in life, put a lot of effort and hard work into it, and it WILL pay off. I think that's the best and most honest answer I can give you.

May your Pencil serve you well!

I respect your honest opinion as well, but at same time, art has many forms. Myself never went to art school, never took art classes, I just used whatever the drawing tools on papers or apps on computer/iPad, and I got idea of how to use them through doing so.
And for some of us, drawing/painting isn't work to live, I think we can just enjoy drawing and painting instead of going through so serious and kinda super hard working on it. If I gotta learn all art or I can't draw, then I shouldn't be drawing, because I just love to draw.

All I wanted to say was, drawing/painting is not that hard. And I want people to start drawing with having fan feeling, want them to know how fun drawing is first.
It is true what you said was, if you want to be super great about drawing and need actual drawing skills from current manuals.

You know - I think you're right. I guess, if you take the fun part out of it and the love part out of it - no amount of practice will make it great. Thanks for the comment!
