Im getting really confused! Ordered over the phone this morning as I saw my local store had the model of iMac i wanted in store. I got an email entitled "your check in window is...", so I went to the store at the time the email gave me and they are saying that it isn't there and I need to wait for a text or email - is this correct/normal?

Anyone?

Did it ever switch on the app to “ready for pickup”?

Yes, you will get an email confirming the check-in window along with a QR code. My wife got her email an hour after ordering. I guess that’s confirmation your order has been “picked” and is ready to be collected.

Thanks all. I got this with a QR code beneath and the app says "your order is ready for pickup" but didn't receive a further email or text:

Apple

We look forward to seeing you during your Check-in Window.

Who is settling for a 8gb model because they want it today and missed the preorder? Asking for a friend....

Me. Ordered 16gb but got cancelled. Have one coming mid June but I’m most likely cancelling it.
Try running all your apps on the new iMac - you won't notice it has only 8GB of Unified Memory.

I have been running my base M1 Mini with 8GB for 6 months and it screams, stays ice cold, and fan never spins up - compared to the old hot Intel Minis that throttles down, fans spin up, and heats up like crazy where I had to get a cooling fan underneath....

That’s great to hear and gives me reassurance. Obviously I plan to keep this for a while so I’m just hoping in 3/4 years time, Apple still gives support to the iMac and that apps are still optimised.

I plan to throttle it tomorrow with basically my daily workload and see if it can back it but judging by what you said, it’ll probably do it with ease.

8GB manages apps just fine, because the SSD is very fast and when it swaps memory on the drive you almost don't recognize it. But it adds wear on the SSD. An 8GB machine used lightly it's completely fine and will last 10 years or more, but if an 8GB machine is used intensively I don't think it will last as much (SSD have special sectors reserved for wear, they don't fail completely but become very slow towards the end of their life)

Tbf I don’t plan to use it intensively. Not a video editor or anything. Simply use it for streaming and a bit of work.
