Should Apple build its own 4G network here in the US to complement existing carrier networks - the network would only be available to iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch/Mac users. if it costs too much Apple can just concentrate on major metropolitan cities (NY, SF, LA, etc.).

Apple can make it free for Apple users or charge them for like $3-$5/whatever/month

just thinking of things Apple can do with the $40B in cash they have.

OP, I see no reason why Peter Oppenheimer is the CFO. You clearly have the credentials. I'm quite surprised you aren't attending the annual meeting today. :rolleyes:

Why is creating their own 4G network such a bad idea? Apple wants to control the entire user experience and the only thing they don't control is the internet connection. By owning a high-speed 4G network dedicated to the iPhone/iPad/iPod/etc. Apple controls the entire user experience.

is it going to piss-off the carriers? who cares. is it going to run into anti trust issues? maybe.

Apple doesn't have nearly a big enough amount of money to build a nationwide 4G network, and you seem to forget that Apple sells internationally.

duh. read the original post.

i said US-only. and i said if it's too expensive they can concentrate on major cities (SF/NY/LA/etc.).

And Apple definitely has enough money to build a nationwide 4G network. A recent nationwide 3G network in China weas built for $14B. China Mobile built a 3G network for 8 cities for just $2.2B.

Because I don't want Apple controlling everything. It's bad enough they control the iPhone as strictly as they do.

And building a network is more than just putting up towers; there's the frequency spectrum they have to buy, backhaul from the towers into the network, other regulatory hurdles, etc. Your Chinese example is not a valid comparison because China Mobile is an entity owned by the government, which means there likely is no regulation, red tape, spectrum auctions, etc.

1) What i suggested was a 4G network to "complement" the existing AT&T 3G networks. nobody will "force" you to use it but it's there just in case AT&T's 3G network craps out. There will be a small majority, like you, who doesn't like Apple "controlling" everything, but the majority of the population doesn't care and will happily use the 4G network.


2) i didn't say building a 4G network would be easy. but just because it's hard doesn't mean Apple shouldn't do it.

You know, I was going to bash your ideas but I've thought about this and you're right. Apple does want to control the entire user experience. That's why they are going to build mini nuclear reactors on the roofs of every Apple store so Apple users can get really cheap power.

Think about it, kind of like they made ATT give iPad users a sweet deal.

If they concentrated on large cities only that would in essence make them AT&T. Apple likes to put the user experience first, so if they can't deliver on a certain front they sure as hell aren't going to go into it half assed if it's their own.
