If they concentrated on large cities only that would in essence make them AT&T. Apple likes to put the user experience first, so if they can't deliver on a certain front they sure as hell aren't going to go into it half assed if it's their own.

better to have a "complementary" 3G/4G network, than to solely rely on the unusable AT&T 3G network we have right now....

i just want a backup 3G/4G network i can use instead of AT&T switching to Edge everytime their 3G network is unavailable.

Why in the hell do you think apple could/should/ or even want to supply that? They aren't a telecom company. It seems to me you have all these gripes and you think apple is some mystical company that can swoop in and save the world from reality itself.

Basically it seems like you just want the apple name on whatever you can get.

Yaayyy!! Someone wrote "complement" instead of "compliment"!

Full marks for using the appropriate word for the context!

I really don't think you understand what it takes to set up a network like that, especially from scratch.

Hint: way more resources than apple has and more legal troubles then they would even want to deal with.

again, i didn't say it was going to be easy. and what do you mean "way" more resources than Apple? ROFL. Apple's got $40B in the bank. ZERO debt. and probably an AA/AAA credit rating.

So Apple should build a 4G network for them?
How about AT&T upgrading and expanding their service and coverage?

Yes! because they're Apple Customers! ROFL

AT&T is spending $2B to upgrade their 3G network.

Yea? Go ahead and price out an advanced network from scratch and how much it would be to implement it nationwide. Don't come crying to me when that $40 Bn come up drastically short.

Uh huh.

Lets see: Apple should invest tens of billions of dollars....possibly the entire value of the company.....so that a portion of their customers in (only) the US can have slightly better internet?

"tens of billions of dollars...possibly the entire value of the company"

ok this is hilarious :D

slightly better internet in the worlds largest and most important market??? why the hell not??!

a better iPhone/iPad 3G connection means

1) more App downloads from the App Store
2) more songs/video downloads from iTunes
3) more mobile web surfing and ADS (Apple recently bought quattro wireless)
4) more ebook downloads from the iBookstore
5) better overall user experience!

and so on and so on and so on....

It would cost well over $40 billion.

To create a "nationwide" network like that in Australia would cost around $50 bn, almost the entire country lives along the east cost. Also, the population is far smaller, so you're talking about a $50 bn network that mostly stretches down one coast, and is only required to serve around 23 million people right now. That's just for home internet, not 4G tech that's far beyond what we have now in terms of speed, and not JUST for customers of a single company.

did you read my previous posts?

1) China Mobile was able to build a 3G network in 8 cities for just $2.2B

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchina/2008-08/19/content_6948986.htm

2) China Unicom built a nationwide 3G network for just $14.6B

China's population = 1.3 billion
US population = 300+ million

1. That was for 3G, not 4G.

2. Chinese workers get paid 10x less than they do in the US. Everything would cost more in the US to build.

3. Electronic components cost more in the US.

4. The lack of red tape in China means they can work on projects like this faster, and at a lower cost due to not being required to satisfy the same number of regulators.

5. Nearly everyone in China would be a customer. That means 1.3+ billion potential customers to foot the bill. Even if this mobile provider is the second or third largest in China, they may have more mobile phone users than there are Americans. Apple doesn't have many US iPhone customers. Then find the % of iPhone customers who would be willing to pay more money for a 4G network that merely complements their existing AT&T 3G internet speeds, and your market is VERY small, and the investment required would be VERY high.
