Depends entirely on whether or not say $1200/yr for a productive work tool is useful to you.

$100/month is not much if it saves you time. At an hourly rate of $50-60 hr which is not even that high for a professional in Australia, it only needs to save someone like that 2 hours a month over 3 years and it has paid for itself.

If you're carting a lot of data around with you, the lack of needing to do as much storage management on your device could well cover that.

Not for me, but I wouldn't buy that spec :D
Makes sense and can definitely apply to some. Pre-COVID I probably could have justified a pro for work just like I did when I purchased my gen 2, but now in this new normal I just can’t. Im very interested in the new 12.9’s but am just not in any hurry to buy one. Excited for the future though.

Here
For me personally, I've generally been happy with the experience of my 10.5" iPad Pro with 4GB of RAM, but I do see refresh on occasion. Doubling that to 8GB is already a huge jump for 95% of all things individuals will do on an iPad. I feel like anything that would benefit from the 16GB of RAM will also be functional on 8GB, maybe just to a less degree (think less layers in Procreate).

Given that the standard Mac RAM is 8GB and that the vast majority of iOS devices is currently 2GB - 8GB, I don't think obsolescence is an issue. Additionally look how it took 10 years to get 8GB and how Macs have been selling at 8GB for so long. I don't see 8GB becoming too little within this tablets usable lifetime.

It is not worth the price. The upgrade from 512 gb 8gb RAM to the Tb 16 gb is $500 almost.

That is the price of a Xbox Series X. And the hardware inside the Xbox Series X destroys the iPad Pro.

So Apple is overcharging like hell on the RAM and SSD upgrade.

Yes. Everyone who says no is just sad they can’t afford it. But the truth is the 1TB model will last YEARS beyond the lower storage capacity due to the upgraded ram

Truth is I’d rather have the 8gb because when the next model comes out I’d rather sell and buy that then be stuck with the old 16gb model because the money I put in it.

I don't bother reselling (mostly just pass it down). I do agree that it would be so much easier to scratch the iPad itch if I could be content with base models now that prices have jumped quite a bit.

However, I've wanted 1TB since 2018 (actually, since 2013 but that wasn't an option) so the 16GB is a very nice bonus for the extra $50-100 over 2018 pricing.

Yeah if you’re already in the 1TB camp… $100 for mini LED & 16gb is not too shabby. This will be probably one of the few years you’d get such a substantial bump in RAM for relatively little cost difference (relative to previous gen… not the next storage tier down that has 8Gb this generation)

As for myself… I’m kinda jonesin’ for 2tb, and again 16gb is just gravy ?

The buzz around 16gb is pretty interesting to me in retrospect. They did not talk about RAM at all in the presentation as a selling point on its own, though they did dangle it out there on that slide with the overview of the new iPad Pro’s features And do list it in the specs on the site, which they never used to do. All of the debate over its value is purely from the nerds on the forums ?

I'm quite thankful I don't feel the need for 2TB on iPad. The 1TB is expensive enough. 😅

Besides, I'll be buying either an Air 4 or Pro 11 sooner or later depending on when Apple cuts firmware updates for the 2016 Pro 9.7 (mom gets my Air 3 and I get a new mid-size iPad).

Hopefully the new iPad can handle external storage better, without requiring external storage to have a power source (which for a +1k PRO device is so weird)

but guess we need to wait for a proper review that actually tests things like this,

That might be true, but the thing is that most people that don't need it and buy it anyway, will also upgrade next year when something better comes out...
I was thinking of buying the 1TB model because of the 16GB of RAM, but I certainly do not need so much storage. I don't do any video editing. I don't handle large files..
I also have a 16" MacBook Pro with 16Gb of RAM and a 27" iMac with 48GB of RAM and this is where I do my work. The iPad isn't going to replace them anytime soon, no matter what Apple does with iPadOS 15.
I am probably buying the 256GB model.

How? Be it 1TB or 128GB, same iPad using the same chip will receive same OS updates and lifespan. Apple will make sure everyone's experience stays on level no matter which RAM you bought.

Sure 16GB of RAM means you manage more apps in the background, or loads games faster. But next gen iPad Pros will make sure you can do better, faster with a more efficient SoC, regardless of how many RAM/storage you have.

At least that has been my experience after being Apple customers for decades. More recent example is the iPhone 12 vs 12 Pros. Real life usage has been showing that performance difference is there but for the most part, negligible. Although I got myself a 12 Pro Max simply for the battery.

Everyone? Boy do you have a nerve to say that. I have an iPad Pro with 6 GB of memory and I don’t have any problems with all that I use it for. 16 GB with a required 1 TB of memory is a waste of money for my needs, so why pay more for something I don’t need.

None of my drives require external power when plugged in on my 2018 12.9. What do you mean? Unless the drive generally requires a power supply to operate it, bus powered drives seem to work as they would on a mac.

Hopefully it’s different to the 1TB 2018 iPad Pro. That RAM seems to have been locked away from third party apps for some reason ?

16GB on iPad OS is absurd. The only reason it exists is because they manufacture the same SoC for MBP/iMac. I guarantee that the 2021 iPad Pro will be classified as Vintage by Apple before 16 GB is needed to run iPad OS.

if you need the disk space, go for it. But buying this for the RAM is like buying a super car that’s electronically limited to 100 mph.

and here’s the thing: even if I’m wrong, I could buy the new iPad when that day comes earlier than I thought for $1100, throw my current one in the trash, have a now-better iPad than you and I’ll *still* have spent less money than if I’d bought 16GB for the hype today.

People are SO obsessed with the OS. It’s hilarious. It’s not macOS as macOS is on a Mac. Just get over it, and accept that. You dont need 16gb to run macOS, why do you think you’ll need it to run iPadOS?

However…there are apps on iPadOS that would benefit from more ram. LumaFusion, Procreate, Affinity Design, Affinity Photo, Shapr3D, just to name a few I use, there are likely many more. Just because you don’t use anything that warrants it doesn’t mean everyone else won’t.

There are a few programs hitting the 6GB mark today.
Now the hardware constraints are off.
If you wanted the XDR screen to produce content you’ll want a bump in memory.
Have more, potential to do more.
