thanks for your comment. I think I'll go with Apple. I would rather wait a bit so in future i deal with Apple directly in case of any issues. What are you thoughts on getting Apple Care? is it worth it? I'm planning on buying Magic Keyboard and I feel like i might end up dropping my iPad while using it with magic keyboard. It doesn't seem that iPad attaches with the magic keyboard very strongly...

have a look at this clip at 3:00
Mr. Schulze isn't talking about the ipad detaching from the keyboard. The magnets are strong. Look at the video again. He's got his legs spread wide with his left foot tucked partly under his right leg. He's balancing the keyboard on part of his folded left leg and part of his ankle - not exactly a stable lap situation. He lifts his hands from the keyboard and the whole keyboard/ipad tips backwards because there's no support under the back portion of the keyboard. Who the hell types like that and thinks they can take their hands away and not have everything fall backwards?

Fair point. Here's why I would buy from Apple: from what I understand, the seller is responsible for repairs.

I would want my device to be repaired by Apple, not a third party.

Thanks, appreciate the follow up!

In practice these sellers have repair agreements in place with Apple, at least the big ones like retailers and carriers.

If you plan on using your statutory/ consumer laws they count against the seller in most countries- Apple might be quicker at times with repair if they happen to be the seller at the same time but the legal end result is usually the same in my experience.

And resale just becomes that much more difficult.
I don’t buy things for the intention of resale. My previous iPad was introduced in 2013 and was still receiving security updates as of May 2021. I traded it in with Apple and they gave me $85 for the trade in towards my new iPad.

My thoughts are, if it's a significant cost for the item, then yes.
I got AC with my 1st gen iPad Pro as the extra cost wan't really significant overall (never needed it), but it's like car insurance.

I don't believe it really matters where you get it if you are getting AppleCare - since Apple seem very good about dealing with issues if you've paid for the privilege.

If you are going with AppleCare then I would get the cheapest new item from eBay - often a big discount.

Failing that I would go with John Lewis for the free 2 year warranty (nice to see some have had luck with Apple covering people past their 1 year warranty, but I don't think you can count on it. Consumer law protections are hit and miss depending on the particular issue).

And if you really want a discount more than John Lewis' warranty, plus a great return policy, then Amazon fits the bill.

I do buy many things from Apple but have found great deals on iPads have either been eBay or refurbs from Apple.

I wouldn't touch anything in the £1k (or much lower) price from Ebay.
I personally don't trust high value items (off the back of a lorry) from ebay, but that's me.

For me car insurance is different as you’re at risk every single time you get in the vehicle. AC is insurance on top of insurance as everybody who rents or owns a house has contents insurance, and there is less risk to devices compared to cars.

A good quality case is enough combined with my home insurance for that extremely unlucky accident for me. Paying Apple £7.99 a month on top of the already expensive device for me is excessive.

In the UK…the consumer laws are the same regardless of where you bought it from. Amazon or Apple.

Go for what you care most about - delivery time or price (in case there is a discount). Your goods are warranted by Apple regardless of where you buy.

Even after the warranty period is over, you are protected by Consumer Law and Apple will repair your product regardless of where you brought it. And Apple does abide with consumer law… this is my own experience in the UK having used many and all sorts of Apple products fo over 10 years. And have got things repaired for free many times, well over the warranty period.

If Amazon suits you better for prime delivery - get it. You are definitely not losing anything.

Personally I think buying Apple products from Amazon UK is perfectly fine. They offer slightly better prices on many Apple stuff than if you go directly to Apple, and at the moment for example they are selling the iphone 12 mini for £100 off RRP. Like gspannu said you get your 1 year warrantly from Apple regardless, and if you get issues you can return back to Amazon very easily. I would not buy high value Apple gear from Ebay though, too many potential issues there, although i did buy my first ever Apple item from Ebay in the early 2000's, the 4th Gen Ipod which I brought for like £150 brand new and sealed (worked fine with no problems at all).
