I can definitely understand wanting your iPhone to be flawless. I try to use situations like that as a teaching moment for myself. I try to tell myself it’s going to get a ding or scratch at some point and it will still be fine. So I don’t know how bad your OCD is but I’d suggest keeping it. Enjoy the idea that the next scratch will bother you even less.

Return it. That greedy jerk Tim Cook is ripping you off by charging extortionate prices, so you deserve a perfect product.

Don’t feel guilty about returning it. Cook doesn’t give a damn about your financial well-being, so why should you care about a multi-trillion dollar corporation?

I wouldn't return it myself, but I accept the only way to keep these devices pristine is to not take them out of the box. Meaning I accept scratches as normal and inevitable. I understand my tolerance to such might be higher than yours, and yes, as you are under the return window, if I were you I would just return it so you can sleep. Do check it out before leaving the store.
Yeah I am case-less most of the time now, so have embraced wear and tear. It's a computer that makes calls and takes really good pictures, not a piece of jewelry.

GOOD MORNING!

If it bothers you THAT much, return it and swap it out within the 14 days of no-questions asked returns.

Otherwise... just enjoy the phone. It's going to get imperfections (microscopic) every time you use it.

The oleophobic coating on the screen is going to wear off within 6 months of use. If you use a screen protector, theirs only lasts 3 months (if you buy a good one). Most are 1 month. Nothing lasts perfectly forever.

Every microscopic piece of dust that gets between the case and the phone is going to cause more microscopic abrasions along the side of the phone. You can't see it with the human eye, but you can if you pull out a microscope. (I don't recommend this).

The fact that you went and posted this on this forum leads me to believe you should either return it and get a new one, or buy a used one that already has scratches so you don't have to worry about "breaking it in".

FYI to the OP. The edges have a good chance of developing scratches and nicks to the painted edges. Check Youtube videos and you will see this is fairly common problem from putting the phone in a case or scratching the lightning cable port area. For some reason, based on Youtube videos, the white phone with silver edges seems to attract more scratches and nicks vs the other colors.

If it bothers you that much, return it but know that you are likely to encounter the same problem down the road.

How is your device working other than the cosmetic issue? If everything is perfect then keep it. What will your luck be if you exchanged it and you get a pristine phone, but you have a hardware defect? Remember to pick your battles!

So lets keep it simple. Apple is charging a premium price and there is nothing wrong with desiring a premium product without cosmetic flaws. If you are 100% sure you didn't cause, then I would go into the Apple Store and keep exchanging until you get your desired product. Now if you don't care about scratches and any other cosmetic defects then I would keep it. Trust me imperfections bother me so much, just go ahead and exchange. Don't listen to some idiots in this forum.

Hello. I desire for some advice on wether or not having an exchange for my newly purchased iPhone 14 Pro Max is worth it. I noticed a small minuscule scratch on the bottom left curve of the body. I’m not sure if it was there before I received it in-person at an Apple store or I had done it myself. The only incident I can remember is taking the device in and out of the clear protective case (also purchased from an official Apple store) to clean it. Mind you, I never bumped the phone into anything let alone had any sharp objects nearby (I only handled it softly in my hand). This incident occurred after owning the iPhone for literally two hours, I am not exaggerating. I have an OCD issue that has been giving me immense trouble knowing it is on the phone. I caused much stress for everyone around me because of myself becoming frustrated over it.

I purchased the iPhone on September 28th, 2022. Meaning I am under the 14-days-return-policy.

Below are attached screenshots of a conversation I had with an Apple specialist via iMessage. This person stated I could have the possibility of exchanging the phone for the exact same model in perfect pristine quality.

Is this for real? Do what you want. It’s your money.

So I’m no expert but OCD is a real disorder but many use it as a way of saying they’re particular. I took this post as you have a real disorder. If you are just being picky then definitely keep it.

Yep I’d worry more about the disorder. And apparently another disorder of some kind needing advice about returning something they don’t like.

Wow Tim, I didn’t know you posted here? Anyway I couriered you a nasty letter about music rights at iTunes and Apple Music last year and now all my receipts from Apple are in French. Would you like to comment on that?
GOOD MORNING!

I must assure you that we at Apple would never, ever do something so passive aggressive and spiteful. I can assure you that your letter was most definitely received and given to the proper employees here at Apple to handle it. On a completely separate note I am finishing a nice baguette right now. Would you like me to mail you some?

Apple will block you from doing so just for cosmetic damage. I tried to exchange my iPhone XS max back in the day 3 times, and last time staff told me better not do it too many times or you won’t be able to buy anything from us for a long while.

Maybe next time but I forgot one thing…

After I sent you that nasty letter about songwriter rights and iTunes and Apple Music policies that where being taken up by others because you are “Apple”; we noticed that our iTunes Connect account shows active but we are locked out. Would you care to elaborate on that?

On a more serious note:

Tim Cook actually does seem to take an interest in the little guy if you push his “hot button” and it has nothing to do with hardware sales. Be critical of their intellectual policies and actually have a solid argument - then yes, they won’t openly admit it; but strange things will happen to you in the walked garden that is Apple.

“Once happenstance. Twice coincidence. Three times - enemy action!”

The biggest mistake the OP made is sharing this decision with everyone else.

if I ever plan to return or exchange my phone it’s nobody’s business. Decisions like that are private for me

Well if you are simply returning for no reason then yeah it makes sense. But cosmetic defects are not acceptable especially for the asking price.

Is the surface under your car without ANY scratches at all? You don't know that? Because nobody bothers to LOOK under there.

A case on the iPhone and nobody would LOOK for any scratches on your new iPhone.

Just relax and enjoy your iPhone.....🤷‍♂️

Apple Store staff Says cosmetic defects return will not be accepted after a number of returns. I think it’s like 5 last Time I asked them, whether you think it is acceptable or not.
