^ Those guys wouldn't exist unless there were early advocates for highly repairable, modern, modular laptops. Some day, after many of us put more resources into supporting paradigms that respect user freedom, we will see many more companies like that popping up with even more lucrative offerings.
mmmm Apple started with repairable PCs and laptops long ago. How long till framework stop what they are doing that is stop offering repairable laptops.

That's why I don't trust ANY company but prefer to just build a PC myself.

That's why I said a modern repairable laptop. Indeed, once upon a time user serviceable laptops were a thing like you mentioned, but the model now has shifted to ensuring repairs can only be done in-house.

I doubt framework will stop making repairable laptops as that's essentially the entire philosophy (and business model) of their business.

I agree about building your own PC though, I always prefer that option (plus it's a lot more fun that way).

Apple was built on being privacy focused and quality first but we got butterfly keyboards and failed fragile display cables
and CSAM.

again, don't trust any company they are only after your money.

You do know that Intel CPU or AMD CPU in that Linux laptop is closed source. So much for going open source.

Just you know there are open source CPUs but not in laptops yet.
Yep I'm in it for the long haul. My principles:
1. Pay $$$ the most open systems I can handle (System76 in the goldilocks zone for me, not Librem or MNT Reform)
2. Tell vendors (and competitors) what I really want: all open hardware and software + "just works" ease of use
3. Remind vendors and competitors what I want repeatedly every few months

I've already done steps 1 and 2 for a laptop. I wrote System76 and Librem and told them what I really want as well.

This post reeks of "yeah but [insert thing here] is made under capitalism though" energy when people critique capitalism.

We know. There's no perfect completely libre open source solution out there. The point is there's better options out there (at least from a power/freedom/privacy perspective) and that's why we're going with them. Would we like there to see better options for CPUs (maybe something open built on RISC-V)? Of course, but we're not there yet. It will take early evangelists putting their dollars where their mouth is before we see better options; i.e, an initial sacrifice of convenience or polish is necessary before the masses can get something excellent.

Yes! I've only recently become aware of these options. Sooooo thankful to open source hardware and software advocates who have worked to make this possible for decades. Building on the shoulders of giants.

I’ve just put in an order for the slick as hell Asus Zephyrus M16 and Zenfone 8. Sane pricing for the very best performance. I will be running Fedora on the laptop. I can then play thousands of real AAA games (including VR) through Steam Proton instead of 7 on macOS. I may have a small Windows partition for Adobe products, but since I have been producing equal results in Gimp thus far after a brief acclimation (letting go of all that easy mode stuff), perhaps it will not be necessary. Davinci Resolve, Bitwig Studio, and Blender round out most of the other creative needs.

15” MacBook Pro is being sold right now, iPhone 11 (already slow and quick to die) is being sold right now, AirPods Pro are being given away soon, HomePod is being given away soonish. Eyeball-murdering iPad is likely being sold once I buy a Kindle, since I mostly use it for reading books. I never bought a watch as it always seemed like a toy for bored people.

Wow congrats! Sounds like you're having fun. GIMP wow - I installed PhotoGIMP which seems easier. But still intimidating.

Sure, I’ll lug around 500 books everywhere I travel

Amazon’s not ideal, but they won the book war. Like Steam for games. They have the selection and the longevity. It’s the way it is. Until a BooksAnywhere service comes along.
I would rather get a samsung tab with the kindle app.

Kindles are overpriced.

What is the point of this post? So what? I don't have an intel or AMD CPU that is open source? At least the rest of it is? Oh, I guess if one thing can't be, I should just go with Apple and their proprietary hardware AND software. Got it.

Try building a laptop yourself. I'll wait. (Saying this as someone who has built my own PCs since the Mwave days.)

If one is on the internet, the bits are being scanned and logged. Period. My own feeling is that I am not going to give up a very good environment for something half-baked, so I can have total control of the environment. But as in everything else YMMV.

I am not sure that the "bits" being scanned by ISPs, etc., is the same as my device and cloud services scanning.

So, I see it as let me control what makes sense to control. I agree, your mileage may vary, and it does come down to what one sees as acceptable on the part of the corporations in question.

I'm one who will jump only so far - don't have the time nor energy to really do a full break.

Razer 2 > OnePlus 9 Pro 80% deGoogled.
iPad Pro 11 - haven't found a replacement yet. Not that much of a Samsung fan.
rMB > Thinkpad X280 Windows 10 (love the hybrid form factor)
Play unit - ThinkPad X230 installing Linux
MBP > not sure what I will replace it with yet - use to support one customer till mid 2022.

12 ProMax - Work Phone - not seeing any change there near term.

Not a big change but I started almost 2 years back slowly phasing out Apple.
With what I have learned as a result of this CSAM debacle, I will also be looking to deGoogle where it makes sense for me.

You don't have to force yourself to change. IF apple makes a better product like the iPad and you enjoy using it keep it.
If you follow the rage crowd without making rational decisions then its not good.

I started phasing out Apple almost two years back.

Apple had turned into something that I no longer felt a need for. The "it just works" no longer is and the never ending long term bugs for core apps and functions. Got tired of work-arounds.

For the iPad, I'll keep using it until I find a suitable replacement. Haven't found one yet.

Definitely, you don’t want to get caught with kiddie porn, everyone doing that should definitely leave. (Well, truthfully, they should stop doing kiddie porn and turn themselves in and get counseling)

The Kindle is massively subsidized by book sales. Interested to see something like the PineNote take off over time, open source hardware instead of "renting" books from Amazon: https://www.pine64.org/pinenote/
