now that it can be jailbroken, and pad doesn't require as many tweaks as my phone (which is on 9.0.2 6s+ anyways) I'm tempted.

More worried about stock performance comparing the two since my air2 on 8.4 is buttery smooth.

thoughts?

Own an Air 2 and it's definitely more laggier than 8.4.1 but split view and pip and other features are nice.If you can tolerate a bit of lag than upgrade

iPad (especially Air 2) does get a lot of new features that other devices don't.

I did with air 2 from 8.4.1. It's actually smooth. I actually like the split view...it helps me a lot.

How was safari performance ? That's the biggie for me. 7.1.2 to iOS 8 anything turned into more of a slob on my mini2

If that's it, perhaps I can deal.

I would say that you wait till 9.2 is out. Or at least wait out till 9.1.
There are no optimizations for iPad in terms of speed. The new multitasking brings down the entrire experience.
There would also be random stutter at few places.

There is no way I would pass up on the new features for the Air 2 for the exceedingly minor amount of stutter I've seen. Really, for me, it's been a missed frame on pulling down the Notification Center once in awhile.

I wouldn't say that. iOS 9.1 is still definitely worse than iOS 8.4.1 was on both my iPhone 6 and iPad mini 2. That app switcher is the laggiest thing I've ever seen. It suffers on my iPhone 6 (usually when going into or out of an app when a keyboard is open, messages does it the most) and going back to the home screen stutters at times, too. My iPad mini 2? Every single in and out animation is <25FPS if there are more than 3 apps in the switcher. Scrolling is stuttery, especially near the home screen. Swiping away apps is about 30FPS if there are blurred apps in the background. It's awful. Air 2 isn't quite as bad but it still has problems from what I've heard, probably similar to what I described on my iPhone 6.

Control Center suffers on both my iPad mini 2 and iPhone 6, still. Little delays when tapping apps still. Spotlight has that hesitation mid-animation if you slide down too quickly. I hardly see a difference from 9.0 to 9.1. There is some improvement, but nothing really to be said.

That's hasn't been my experience. On my 6 Plus iOS 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 were laggy and slow and not all that responsive until I updated to 9.1. Battery life improved and it was mostly smooth and extremely stable. Same thing with my air 2. It is so good I updated my 6s plus to it too, now running beta 5.

In your case I think it's probably the hardware.

But it's nowhere near 8.4.1 level

What do you mean the hardware? If you mean the device is too old, sure. I can see that, but at the same time, an APP SWITCHER should not be carried out at 20FPS on a two year old device. Even the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad mini, iPad 3, all carried out the app switcher at a much much smoother frame rate than this iPad mini 2. The iPad mini 1 performs the app switcher smoother than the mini 2 on iOS 9!! This is because of the lack of blur effects.

If you mean that my particular device is faulty or has a bad backup, that's not it. I'm running on a pretty much clean install of iOS 9.1 beta 5. All A7 iPads are the same as what I'm talking about.

iOS 9 is still a mess though, we aren't out of the woods yet.

Night and day difference. Safari is actually a joy to use again on iOS 9. If you base the upgrade entirely on an animation glitch here or there, don't do the upgrade. Otherwise, it's a better than iOS 8 imo.

Dang this poll being almost evenly split is making it tough.

I think I should extensively play w an air2 at an Apple Store or something on 9.0.2

Fwiw 9.1 beta isn't on the table. I need jailbreak.

Not trying to sound defensive but are you inferring safari on 8.4 on air2 is junk?
I'm still delighted with it personally

In smoothness, you're most probably correct. But stability, IOS 9 is much better. Safari was a crash fest on iOS 8.4.1 on my 6+. It hasn't crashed once on iOS 9.

If the decision is based simply on fluidity, stick with 8.4.1. If you want more stability, go iOS 9. I use my devices. I don't want crashes. I want things go work. iOS 9 is working for me. iOS 8, not so much.

On Air 2, Safari was fine. Still not better than iOS 9 imo.

On my 6+, Safari was terrible on 8.4.1. Crashes and page reloads several times a day. iOS 9, not a one.

really? 8.4.1 vs iOS 9 both on 6 plus?

I guess I attributed a lot to 1gb of ram, because I never tried iOS 9 on my plus I went straight to 6s plus and kept my plus on 8.4 even when i sold it.

Why not wait until 9.1 is out of beta? We should have it within 2 wks or less.
