Should Steve Jobs resign for iPhone fiasco?

Let's face the facts here folks.

Apple's exclusivity to At&t will be the iPhone's downfall. Apple went with them for pure greed. To get the $300 kickback that the consumer should have gotten and by taking a percentage of the monthly service fee. If Apple wasn't so adamant about getting a piece of the monthly pie then I am sure Verizon would have went with the iPhone. Still they should have went with more than one, but if you are going to only go with one, go with the best--Verizon.

This is the sad truth that us fanboys don't want to admit (me included).

This will also hurt the Mac. A kind of negative Halo Effect. This hurts Apple in so many ways beyond the iPhone and will reverse any Halo Effect seen from the iPod.

And let's not forget AppleTV. That's 2 flops in a row.

Let's see:
-Verizon: That would have KILLED the iPhone. Verizon has terrible customer service among other things.

-Sprint/Nextel: I don't know how big it is, but it's not as big as Verizon or At&tular. (Sprint has a lot of coverage, but Nextel has barely none! I just looked on their site)

-T-Mobile: Same, it's to big. (T-Mobile has fair coverage)

I don't think Jobs will resign over a specific thing. I think just being there x years will do him in.

I wonder who'll replace him.

You are kidding, right?

A- if it's too expensive, don't buy it. Obviously, it isn't, or they wouldn't be selling thousands per day (if the 50-100 per day at local Apple stores, is any indication).

B- While talking about the iPhone with a Verizon retail store owner (also an auto stereo shop - they were installing a dock adapter in my car): "Verizon not taking the Apple deal will probably be among the biggest retail blunders" (I don't remember his exact words, so I'm paraphrasing).

This must be one of the most stupid posts that I have ever seen on MacRumors.

The iPhone has sold far over a million units already. It is a massive, absolutely massive success. It is the best possible advertisement for Apple. The iPhone could generate $2bn profit for Apple this year, and some people talk about $10bn in 2009. For AT&T, it creates new customers. That's why phone companies sell phones: To aquire new customers. Without an exclusive deal, neither Verizon nor AT&T would have been interested very much at all, because they wouldn't have got any new customers that way.

And you probably didn't notice that AT&T has been investing between 50 and 100 million dollars to improve their Edge network, as a result of the iPhone contract. Without an exclusive deal, that wouldn't have happened.

So exclusive deal means: More quality for AT&T customers, plenty more money for Apple. Seems obvious that Steve Jobs has to resign over this.

I'm confused, are you a Mac fan boy, or a Verizon fan boy. As for this being Apples downfall, from the reports I've been seeing, this "fiasco" has been quite a success for both Apple and ATT, and their stockholders. I was with AT&T for a while, then Verizon, then Singular, and now AT&T again but I have a tough time seeing how anyone was any better then the other. Guess I'm just not a fan boy.

A little sad they didn't go with your preferred carrier of choice hunh? The iPhone is not a fiasco, it was AT&Ts fastest selling cell phone ever, and it's Apple's first ever cell phone, so how can you judge Apples cell phone success when they don't have another one to compare to . . .

Honestly, when I read your post, you just sound bitter that Apple didn't go with Verizon, and you are trying to brainwash yourself into thinking that it is a failure because you don't want to break your contract with Verizon to use the iPhone or have to deal with AT&T.

However, Apple could name their next device something else and ATT wouldn't have anything on it.

Time will tell on the iphones success.

It is far too early to tell as yet whether or not in the current market, Apple will have a steady rate of sales over the long term, and whether or not they will have a steady growth rate on the phone.

The first x amount sold are a product of hype, advertisement and fanboys wanting one because it's an apple product.

I think its a disgusting insult personally, expecting people to pay over the odds for a phone, over the odds for a tariff, and locking them in for a full two years (bearing in mind you've paid the cost of the phone, so they shouldn't have any reason to lock you in!)

My current contract here in the UK with Orange is £35. I get 900 anytime minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data (not that I use it!) and I never go over it. Plus, I'm not tied in to any contract!

Let us be really honest, the iPhone although currently a great thing, is indeed a rip off. I love it, but would never get one on principal.

Two quick points:

Compared to AT&T and Verizon's normal data plan (tariff) rates, the iPhone's is approximately 50% less expensive. For unlimited data. That's over the odds?

I'm not aware of any phone sold by a US carrier that is sold unlocked.

OS X wasn't a gamble? The iPod wasn't a gamble? The iTunes Store wasn't a gamble? The switch to Intel wasn't a gamble?

Can you define the problem that is the iPhone? I mean, in all honesty it doesn't really make sense. The iPhone is a success.

I don't know where you got the idea from, but the iPhone is not a disaster. Jobs said that after 18 months (I think right?) he expected about 10 millions units to be sold. 30 hours after the launch, more than 147,000 units. That's 4,900 units per hour. Now, imagine if that was over the course of a month. That's more than 3.5 million units. Even if only a fifth of that many units move month to month, the 10 million mark will easily be reached.

I don't know why you'd want to get rid of Jobs. Without him, the company goes into a nose-dive.
