Have you built a computer before? Or read the back of an AC adapter? Power Supply is used are the term for where the device gets the energy needed to run it.

I worded my post carefully to not sound like the iPad was worth of a Retina grade display, the A4 chip, and low ram could in no way support the same PPI as the iPhone/iPod Touch. As I DID say, the iPad is capable of a higher PPI than it currently has, with only a bump in RAM required to do so.

As for cost.. I don't know if you've noticed, but the bumps form the iPod Touch 3Gen compared to now the 4Gen, are stellar, and yet the price has been stabilized. For the price we pay for the iPad, a higher PPI screen and front facing camera would most definitely not increase the price. Think about the iPod upgrade..

Yeah I know what a PSU is but it just sounded dumb to point that out as if it was relevant. But as I said, there is more than the bump in RAM required to do that kind of resolution, it certainly makes for different development requirements, which means it needs more powerful processing.

In terms of cost, the biggest problem is yield. This is the percentage at which they can make displays without throwing them out due to faults. When making an LCD panel, it's kind of an all or nothing thing. A few dead pixels is the most they can accept, but it can be much worse very easily. The retina displays on the iPhone and iPod are not the cheapest to make at all, but because of their size (despite having more pixels) the yields are much higher because there is less to go wrong. When we talk about bringing that size up to 9 inches with WAY more pixels, the yield becomes much lower.

Just think about the reason Apple is using a different panel manufacturer for the iPod Touch. It is because of costs, and because of supply. It's already difficult enough to make the IPS retina displays, and getting them out in iPhones as quickly as possible puts a lot of strain on their supplier. Having a different manufacturer for the iPod Touch allows there to be no extra strain, and so it saves money.

There is no chance of a Retina Display in an iPad in 2011, maybe in 2012.

If the new iPod Touch makes you jealous, you shouldn't have bought an iPad in the first place.

If Apple wanted to do it right, they would have updated the iPod Touch to a 5" screen or so, leave the iPad where it is at 10" w/3G, and keep the iPhone well, a phone. Lots of differentiation in that lineup to meet all kinds of needs. You just can't play games on a 3.5" screen...too many fingers in the way. My wife was playing scrabble on her iPhone the other night...talk about getting a headache looking at those tiny letters.

So I went to the apple store today to pick up the new nano...

I had to check out the new touch, it's pretty nice with updated features..

I loooooove my iPad but when I saw the touch I got a bit jealous..

Anyone feel the same?

I never understood the point of an iTouch....so no. In fact i wish that it dies and the classic lives...too much product dilution

People where AT&T coverage is poor.

People with CDMA only providers (Verizon/Sprint) and have figured out that the Media functionality on their Android or Blackberry handsets is poor.

Those two are very US centric. Also, I couldn't tell you how many people I've seen in NY with a Blackberry Bold or Curve and an iPod Touch.

People who don't like phones and wish there was an iPod Touch with 3G but will probably get a mifi to put their 3G card in anyway (that's me...)

That would be me. Work supplied Blackberry, so why would I spend an extra $90 a month for an iphone just to play games and listen to music? For the same up front price I have a great multimedia device without a lifetime burden of $2000 in carrier fees.

I can see/would hope to see the ipad's resolution bumped up to 1280x1024. I reckon old SJ would make a song and dance about how it is a retina display from the distance you will be looking at it...

I actually doubt an ipad's psu (read BATTERY) could power a 2048x1536 resolution display without a big battery life hit. It would probably be big enough a hit for the iPad to stop being a compelling product. Although, it's battery could have enough voltage for anything so that was really a moot point, d fusion b...

I can also see Apple using the iPad to introduce their own SoCs and if the A5 (or whatever the A4's successor is called) has dual core processing at 1.5GHz (just a number plucked from the air) and a beefy graphics processor with a low voltage and 512mb ram, I can see it being a worthy successor to this iPad.

IMHO Apple seem to be going in the other direction with the iPod Touch. Now that the Nano has been specialised into being a wearable device, I would say that they are pushing the iPod Touch as being the 'default' iPod. To fulfill this role it has to stay at a pocketable size and can't become a mini-tablet. I'm not sure if this strategy will work as it does leave a gaping hole for a 'simple' iPod that older eyes and hands can easily use.

It will be interesting to see if Apple do introduce a 5"-7" tablet. I had thought that there wouldn't be enough differentiation but the Galaxy Tab actually looks much more notepad size than the hardback book size of the iPad. I now think that there is space for both sizes.

I'm not jealous - I'm about to get my 4th gen iPod when it comes available in stores [not apple ones].... I'll be handing that over for skype purposes.

Why I have an iPhone, iPod Touch and an ipad

Ideally the iPhone would completely replace the iPod Touch, but the extra 32Gb makes a very big difference in terms of music storage.

I had the 64Gb iPod Touch first, but certainly wouldn't think of selling it now I have an iPhone.

Having said that, I rarely take the iPod Touch out with me these days, it's more for using in a home dock.

imo and use, the iPad does a completely different job(s).

Edit
One other point, I got the Touch to replace a classic with the addition of some game playing. I ended up using it for all kinds of things like expense tracking and personal management through Things. I didn't have the option of an iPhone at the time as I was locked into another 12 months of a 2 year mobile contract.
