My SS with black sports band arrived today in Germany. Like it a lot, except the band - waiting for my steel Link band, which is more in style with my mechanical watch. Otherwise cool so far.

I'm pretty sure you can to an extent, but obviously without your phone it can't track distance and stuff because of the lack of GPS. I think you can sync back basic details (calories, heart rate etc) when you get back to your phone.

It does actually calculate distance pretty accurately without GPS. In Mashable's review (I think), it was just off by 50 meters on a 4 km run.

my watch arrived with about 76% charge. I put the charger on it while I went through the pairing and syncing process, and it took about 15 minutes to get to 100%. Granted, I couldn't keep my fingers off it that whole time, which I bet slowed it down...

42mm steel with classic leather band. I have quite small wrists, but I am happy with the sizing of the 42mm. The band is a little longer than preferred, but works great. Still waiting on my medium leather loop

42mm SG Sport next to a Pebble Steel. At first, I missed the "substantial" feeling of the metal band on my Pebble compared to the sport band. Now, I'm starting to really appreciate how light the Sport is.

I don't think the 42mm looks too goofy on my wrist, especially since it's nearly the same as the Pebble I've been wearing all this time. I really hope custom watchfaces come around, though.

38mm white sport arrived about half an hour ago. Love it. As others have said the sport band is really nice. It's very soft and comfortable. Now I've seen it in person I also disagree that it looks cheap. It looks far nicer than I thought it would given the disparaging comments some have made about it.
