Nice clean setup. How did you mount the Studio under the desk? I plan to do the same with mine when it eventually arrives in a few months.
Behind the monitor is a pill shape cutout for wires, they drop down in the corner below where a subwoofer sets. For the moment its sitting on top of the subwoofer with a mouse pad between the sub and Mac Studio about 15" off the ground. I've moved it around from behind the monitor, next to the monitor, off to the right/left a few feet and I always go back to under the desk. It's out of site and easy to reach. I have a few different speaker stands I'm playing with that raise the speakers up another 6" but I can't decide which sound better and look best.

Damn I didn't know people still used Blu-ray's to watch movies, let alone on your computer :)

If you have a large screen home theater, blue ray/HD discs is still the best way to go. I have a 125" 4K projection system in a dedicated room for music and film. Streaming content cannot match the 4K discs and even regular Bluray looks better and certainly sounds better.

That's cute. But I have an Sony OLED TV which arguably has better picture than a projector and when I watch 4K streams they looks absolutely flawless. That aside I also download 4k BR Rips which is far more convenient as when I put a disk in a player it doesn't take a full 3 minutes of FBI warnings, logos, previews and awkward dvd menus. Most of all I don't need a closet full of disks just one NAS hidden away and an Apple TV with nice interface of all my titles. To each their own.

P.S. Why do you have speakers in-front of your screen?

So, the inference is that you have a NAS full of pirated BR rips?

A good projection system vs. OLED TV is like comparing Godzilla to a pet baby Gecko when it comes down to watching movie.

We have a 75" OLED in our living room and four others. They're fine for casual viewing, but when we're looking for the theater experience, no TV matches a screen nearly 10 feet across across with a solid sound system. For projection to work well, you need a light controlled room and great sound. Larger screens show artifacts from streaming sources and don't deliver true 4K. They also compress audio, which is obvious if you have a good system. I have an Apple TV, but I wouldn't put it near my better gear! LOL

Much of this is need vs. want. I'm in the film biz, so a proper home theater is needed. But I can tell you that pretty much anyone who comes over to watch a movie is blown away by the system, including people with top level OLED displays. Good projection systems can't replace a TV though and every room in our house has big TV's as well, including two by our pool! LOL!

The music speakers (there are actually 4 sets) are rotated out of the way for viewing. It's a pretty good setup, but you should see/hear my friends system with Magico speakers. His speakers cost more than my whole system! There you have it! More than you needed to know!

I expect that he means exactly that. I don't steal material. And my time is a LOT more valuable than the time it takes to rip films. It's a sad thing to do, though a lot of people do it and feel they're entitled. If I want to watch something, I'll pay for it. We did stream "Moonfall" last night (it's terrible!), which is okay since it's nothing I'd ever want to own. I think it was 5.99 for our family to watch. It would have cost us 60-70 bucks in a theater, so six bucks is practically free! The 150 or so discs I do own fit in a single album.

. . . Does anyone know if the Studio Display can be used as a HomePod replacement? I would love to get rid of the HomePod from the office since the Studio Display speakers are good enough for my use. . .
If you are asking whether the Studio Display can be used as a home hub, then I don't think it can. However any of the following devices will do the job:

Sure some are. That has nothing to do with the topic of quality though.

But in reality 90% of them are rips I already own and I find waaaaay to annoying to use for the reasons I mentioned. Not to mention on a OLED with the best backlighting available even a 4K Netflix steam looks flawless.

Im guessing your projector or some equipment along the way is compromising the 4k stream which is giving you the impression that Disks look better.

They look very nice.

I would love a pair myself, but then I’m probably having a similar dilemma to many now… Trying my hardest to justify the ‘extra’ cost of a Studio Display.

I listened to the speakers at an Apple Store and they are excellent for a display - I’d be perfectly happy with them - but if decent standalone 4K displays are going for 400-500, it’s difficult to id only need to spend another 300 on speakers and a webcam.

The Studio Display speakers do sound very good. They still can't replace a nice pair of external speakers though. Headphones are another great option to consider if external speakers aren't available.

LOL. I work in film production and just finished a feature, plus shooting another in the fall. I've been setting up high-end systems for years.

Though this is a VERY basic explanation of why discs will (for now) best streaming, it's mostly on point.

I fully get that most people don't care about the small differences, but just as with high-end audio, so of us take great care and pleasure in getting the best cinematic experience possible. FYI: Not only is my theater room fully light controlled, it's also treated for sound to minimize reflections and improve fidelity. This stuff only matters to some folks, but the differences can easily be seen by most people. My 17 year old son spot compression artifacts in most streams and we have blazing fast bitrates. Audio is also effected. None of this happens with the discs, which give ALL of the data ALL of the time.

Personally, I think Apple should have abandoned internal speakers on the ASD and created a matching pair of externals.

I'm sorry, but if you have any experience with audio, the ASD speakers are not very good at all. Even a fairly inexpensive set of speakers or headphones will make the point easily.
