the superdrive works fine when attached to the USB-A on my mac studio. the unbalanced CD i tested totally drowned out any fan/power supply noises when it spun up!
I still don't get these loud Studio reports. Mine is 100% silent. I hear literally nothing right next to it. Maybe you need to find out if there is some software to blame or exchange your unit?

my ultra is quite silent, but the superdrive with an unbalanced CD on top of a wooden desk is easily 40 dBA louder. The desk does a good job amplifying the vibration from the superdrive.

Ordered my pair of ASDs Standard Glass VESA Mount on April 9th from Best Buy with store pickup for April 20th and they came 1 day earlier so today went to the store and picked them up. Up and running already. Firmware update went smooth on both displays at the same time. No yellow tint and they look AMAZING!!! I'm super happy now with my setup and have ZERO regrets going from a pair of 32" LG 32UN880-B to a pair of 27" ASDs. The sharpness and the colors are totally worthy the premium price.

My non-desk couch-potato setup, I can do all my work sitting on my couch with a cat on my lap,
and watch some TV, all at the same time.

i can move the Studio Display more in front of me when needed :)

That's why I like the back side of the monitor, and made my own VESA mount, because I can always see it.

Nice set up! What’s the monitor arm that you are using?

Nice Humanscale. That certainly does look different from mine. If course I've had the thing for 10 years, and it has had iMacs and now a LG Ultrawide on it. And it is wall mounted.

Is that an Amazon Echo Show in your desk? That’s a really cool clock display it has if it is, is it a standard clock interface you can choose?

Hahaha. It's not an Echo Show. It's a Raspberry Pi 4 with a Raspberry Pi Touchscreen Display running Ropieee and setup as Roon Control Zone for my Matrix Audio X-SABRE 3 DAC/Roon Streamer. However, as you noticed, I did put an Echo Show 5 stand on the bottom of the Pi Display case so I can tilt it. The clock automatically comes up after 1 min the music stops. That is a function embedded in Ropieee software.

You've done an amazing job with that! I seriously thought it was an Echo Show! The stand did catch me out lol.

Lol why does this superdrive actually match it so well?
Almost as good of a match as this one 😌

Call me crazy but I got a cheap Mac Mini 2010 to either gut and repurpose as an external optical drive, or keep as a second Mac.

I found it idles at very low power and quietly, and it actually doesn’t perform as terribly as I expected with High Sierra. So I decided to upgrade it with a Blu-ray drive I had, 16GB RAM and a 4TB Crucial SSD. I’m planning to set it up as a 24/7 light duty NAS, movie/music ripping box, Plex server (direct play only), and secondary device for Bittorrent and other marginal stuff I’d rather not install on the new Studio work machine.

If it doesn’t work out as well as hoped, worst case I can gut it and use a USB/SATA bridge to make it an external Blu-ray drive for the Studio.

Old Mac minis are fun to repurpose, I repurposed an old 2009 model as a Debian Linux web server running 24/7 and it worked out great. Installing Linux always makes for an interesting project, and given that High Sierra is no longer supported with security updates definitely something I'd consider in your case too.

While your eyes might not tell (or care about) the differences between 1080p and 4k or 1440p and 5k on a 27" screen, you will immediately notice the reduction in "working area" from 1440p/5k to 1080p/4k, in much the same way that I noticed (and to some extent still miss) the reduction from the 1440p (2560x1440) on my old late 2013 pre Retina iMac to my current 1080p (1920x1080). 1440p/5k just allows more information to be displayed compared to 1080p/4k.

Maybe, while you've still got the iMac, get a 4k screen from somewhere with a decent returns policy and use it as a second screen on your iMac. If you're OK with the reduction in working area, keep it and use it with the Studio, if not, return it. Or maybe get a £300+ or so 1440p monitor (Philips do one for £400 with an integrated webcam) and again, use it as a second iMac screen, assess it and send it back if it's not for you. At least at the end of it, you'll know whether or not the ASD is the one for you. At least your point of reference (the iMac 5k) is close to that of the ASD.

You can also run a 4K display at a scaled setting for a 1440p work area and it will look very, very close to the 5K display you currently have. If I really look I can tell the difference on my 4K LG but in use it's imperceptable. The LG was also only £350 compared to the Studio Display's price tag.

People might warn you of performance issues with the scaled resolutions but I haven't had any at all with my M1 MacBook Pro. In fact, I run an older Intel MacBook on the same display at the 3008x1692 scaling and that also runs perfectly (despite being a bigger stress test). I suspect performance issues were a thing a long way back in the early days of retina displays when the integrated GPUs were much weaker. We're long since past that point with the M1 chips.

Thank you both eddie_ducking and mcdreamer for your tips! I did bite the bullet and traded my 2017 i7 27" iMac for an Apple Studio base model. Before that, I tried out an LG 27" 27UP850-W next to the iMac and found it acceptable. With the LG as my main monitor now, I do notice a little loss of text sharpness in my Citrix sessions (I'm running scaled at 1440p). I'm ok with it and I may try tweaking the graphics settings on my remote PC. Anyway, I'm happy with my new setup and should be good for at least 5 years.
