I use two Pro Display XDRs on a single Mac - one in portrait mode and the other in landscape mode. As a full-time iOS developer, this setup is extremely satisfying and productive for me. I'll be switching from a 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max to Apple Studio M1 Ultra later this week. No question the cost of this equipment is high, but that's the only downside. The experience is excellent, and my workflow is a good fit. So to me the cost isn't exactly a downside, as I'm willing to pay more for the higher quality I get from Apple. Granted, I buy the store-brand yogurt because I'm cheap in other ways.

That's a totally different situation. The Pro Display XDR is basically just a high end display and it makes sense to buy multiple ones if thats what you want. Totally on board with why you would want that.

What I am saying is the Studio Display is basically a mini all in one computer(it has a webcam, speakers, A13 chip). While that is fine and dandy if you need 1 display......... it ends up being ridiculously expensive for what you get if you want multiple displays since then you are essentially spending money on redundant things you do not need that are built into the cost of the display(such as speakers, webcam, A13 chip, 64GB storage).

Apple's marketing is heavily promoting users with multiple monitors but it's sort of a ridiculous idea to have someone spend extra money on redundant items that are adding a significate cost to the display that have little to no use. If you're buying multiple monitors you are basically being upsold a bunch of things you don't need. This setup right here would run you close to 5 grand for the monitors alone.

Don't forget the cost of the osteopath. Those screens look the best part of a foot lower (if not more) than the HSE suggest/demand (Heath & Safety Executive for those outside the UK) .. though I still think they're mistaken. I'd rather have my eye line in the middle of the screen rather than the top, it stops me from sitting with a bent neck and/or slumping and bending my back (for hours at end)

And yes, I realise the irony/hypocrisy over criticising a publicity shot of a work environment, but my previous photos don't show the 900+mm base height of my desk so I can rest my arms and "slump" (slightly) while keeping my back and neck mostly straight

PS. Yes, agreed, why would anyone need 3x web cams, stereo speaker systems etc ? Produce 2 SKUs for the ASD, one with the useful additions, one without. If nothing else it'll make the selection list a damn site shorter and simpler for audio output and FaceTime/Teams camera selection.

Why? 🙈
mini stacks or Mac minis? what kind of work do you do.

3x M1 Minis ... it was a temporary solution to buy me time after my MacPro 5,1 died last year and I had to go back to using physical machines after years of virtuals. Prior my first M1 Mini, bought at launch just to play with and see how it behaved, the Pro had 7 virtuals on it, I like the concept of an uncluttered machine to do a single task and try to avoid having a "device" do more than one job. Now the Ultra is here, I'll probably go back to virtuals and get rid of two of the Minis, but it still seems that Parallels have a way to go yet on AS to allow MacOS guests to be configured as I need.

It's not really for work any more, just fun & hobby. I'm a semi-retired IT contractor and what little work I do just involves using Safari nowadays.

Hi,

I'm particularly interested in your Max configuration. If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions. Are you finding that 32GB of memory is enough for your music and that you don't need 64GB? I'm about to listen to some of your music, but can I ask whether you make significant use of virtual instruments.

Reason for my questions... I have the Max configuration in my signature on order, delivery end of June. It appears that I could get the configuration, but with 32GB rather than 64GB of memory, before the end of April.

Thanks

Hi,

I use only virtual instruments, plus lots of plugins, including generative sequencers and Max devices. My projects typically include no more than 20-25 tracks, but because of the virtual instruments and Max devices I’d say they’re fairly RAM and CPU intensive.

I upgraded to the Studio from a 2018 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM and the difference is night and day. I went from needing to regularly freeze tracks and run high sample rates, to now running everything in real time at 128 or 256 samples max. So for my use case, 32GB seems sufficient. 64GB certainly wouldn’t hurt, and if you run higher numbers of tracks you may need it, but so far I’m very happy with 32GB for my particular workflow.

I ran today a Pro Tools project with 53 live recorded tracks, about 3 to 4 Waves plugins on each track and memory went up to 35% and memory pressure up to 11%. I have a Mac Studio M1 Max 10/32/32/2TB. I also had Outlook, Roon, Safari, RME TotalMix and WhatsApp running on the background.

Could you please tell us the model numbers of your AOC and Dell monitors?

sure, the Dell P2212H and the AOC I think is an E2775SJ (though MacOS only reports it as 2775. The AOC was dirt cheep (around £90 on Amazon three years ago), the Dell came with a PC at work, got scratched (ever so slightly) by a staff member and I took it out of the skip. I don't care about colour reproduction or Retina resolutions. Up until COVID I was using remote control software to access the machine, I didn't want anything over 1080p, it makes remote control more awkward in my eyes (and slower).

I kind of like pixelated text, it brings back fond memories of my ZX81 and ZX Spectrum :p

PS.They were bought for my final Mac Pro 2010 upgrade, they've just been recycled for use on the Studio, though don't see any reason to upgrade them (though might be tempted by a VESA ASD)

My non-desk couch-potato setup, I can do all my work sitting on my couch with a cat on my lap,
and watch some TV, all at the same time.

i can move the Studio Display more in front of me when needed :)

That's why I like the back side of the monitor, and made my own VESA mount, because I can always see it.
