Sidecar - Has anyone got it working?

I tried utilizing the SidecarCar Beta 9 batch on the public Catalina release + iPad OS 13.1.2 on my iPad 5. There appears to be some glitches and the wireless mode doesn't work for me. @jackluke do you plan on releasing an updated patch? From the comments I read earlier, wireless Sidecar should work with the iPad 5 as it's hardware should support it. Thanks for all of your hard work!

iPad mini 4 , iPad Air 2 and iPad 5 can't work in wireless Sidecar because I guess they require the Wifi 802.11ac probably using a recent Mac with an embedded wifi ac could allow it to work.

The minimal video streaming glitches are side effects of lack of HEVC encoding/decoding GPU features from one or both the devices involved Catalina Mac and iPadOS device.

I have binary compared the latest SidecarCore (269 kb) and it looks very similar to the beta9 one, so for now using it will work.

And after overwritten the SidecarCore binary with the patched, anyone can re-enable SIP, booting from CMD+R and typing from a recovery Terminal: csrutil enable ; reboot

Even if the previous beta9 patch still worked, here is the updated Sidecar patch.

Steps:
- disable SIP, at power-on CMD+R, then from Recovery Terminal: csrutil disable ; reboot
- from a Catalina Terminal make temporary writeable the System folder: sudo mount -uw / ; killall Finder
- open /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SideCarCore.framework/Versions/A/
- replace the file with the one attached
- While usb plugged iPadOS device click Trust from Catalina Finder and at the same time tap Authorize from the iPad

optional post-patch

- re-enable SIP , at power-on CMD+R, then from Recovery Terminal:: csrutil enable ; reboot

You have to plug the lightning/usb cable and establish a Sidercar in wired mode, I don't think you can explore an iPadOS device content from Finder in wireless mode, but consider also that my patched file is for Catalina supported mac, I mean all those apple machines produced from 2012.

Just tested this patch with macOS Catalina 10.15 (19A583) on my late 2013 iMac and iPad Pro 9.7. There is still graphical corruption with some apps like activity monitor and safari however interestingly there is not much graphical corruption with Pages, Keynote, and Numbers on the sidecar display. Without the patch I can still markup screenshots using my iPad Pro in perfect quality just not use sidecar. I'll stick to Duet and Astropad for my sidecar like needs - less seamless but get great quality.

I guess Sidecar requires Metal GPU or maybe an AirPlay Display capable GPU (technically the IntelHD3000 is AirPlay Display capable) and USB 3.0 host. But the fact is on a patched system (pre-2012) many video kexts and frameworks are replaced from a previous OSX, while for Sidecar stock Catalina ones are required since many AirPlay Sender/Receiver instructions are from there. You can notice that when you apply a Video Patch on your unsupported machine you lose the AirPlay feature, instead it worked on a Mojave patched system.

From the Side car control panel, under "Connect to:" in the "Select device" drop down menu, I can select "iPad", but in a few seconds macOS pops up the error "Could not connect to iPad" "Device timed out".

Bluetooth is working on both devices, and both are signed into the same iCloud account. I've tried signing out and signing back in on both devices, turning bluetooth off and on, and rebooting both devices, but to no avail.

Mine is working with or without cable. My system is 2015 late iMac 5K and iPP 9.7

No, Sidecar was not intended for clamshell mode (as far I know no AirPlay Video Display Mirroring can work in clamshell but only through a wired Display cable), but the Sidecar streaming wakes up and resumes almost simultaneously with the Catalina Display "Sleep".

The fact is that apple made totally hidden (and not customizable) their "Sidecar.ipa" from the iPadOS view.

I’ve gone through all your steps but I keep running into the same errors. Namely device disconnected and error 32002. This is with a mbp 2017 and Ipad 5. I plugged in my iPad with a legit lightening cable and performed the trust and authorization but the error persists. The iPad fires up the sidecar app briefly but the screen remains black before it displays an error message on the mbp. Also, the airplay symbol never turns blue.

Do you by any chance have any suggestions? I’m really keen to get it working but have run out of ideas.

Because for iPad 5 you need my patched SidecarCore, even if your MBP 2017 should be Sidecar natively supported it's not enough. Try a good quality lightning-to-usb cable, and use possibly an USB-type-A port.

I did load the sidecar patch (tried both the previous beta and the one linked) but what I will do in the morning is try another cable perhaps. I’m obviously having to run through a dongle so that could also be it I guess. I’ll give it a try with a few dongles and get back to you.

You should try a "lightning-to-USB-standard" using a different dongle vendor with an USB 3.0 type A port hub, or you may try without using a dongle, a direct cable from "lightning-to-usb-type-c"

I believe Apple claims there is no difference in quality. In actuality, I don’t know. But to ensure it is using the wired connection, one thing you could do is, while plugged in, turn off wifi and bluetooth.

Not sure why its working all of a sudden. I tried in clamshell mode while connected to the LG 5k2k as well as a 4k display and was able to output to the iPad as well wirelessly. The res for the iPad Pro 12.9 is 1288x946

This got Sidecar working for me... that is, up until the point where I unplug the cable... then on the iPad it says "Lost Connection" "The session will resume automatically when the connection improves." and has the button "Disconnect". And on the Mac is the error "Could not connect to iPad" "Device timed out".

Sidecar only works with iPads that support the Apple Pencil. So no 5th gen, only 6th and higher and Pro models, as well as Air and Mini models that support the pencil.

And you can only have a "wired Sidecar" since the 2015 Mac don't have the Wifi 802.11ac

Not working for me, 2018 mba, 2018 ipad pro wifi bt turned on signed in to icloud, etc. Wired sidecar works but not wireless no matter what I try.

Sidecar is an example of the new Apple, buggy piece of crap. If Google/Microsoft had a paid tier where your data would be safe, I'd be using them instead of apple, but here we are.
