I hate small laptops, my 15 inch powerbook if perfect and its not heavy at all. Hell when I was in school I had to carry over 30 pounds of books.

And you had to walk 30 miles... in snow... up hill... both ways?

the MBP weighs a whole lot less than my textbooks. and i have to carry a few of those around at a time, no matter what. i think the MBP is incredibly portable. grow some muscles.

i currently own the latest rev macbook with specs bumped up to 160gb and 2 gb ram, but it's too heavy and not powerful enough for my needs, as i realised i do tonnes of video-editing and 3d motion as well! :(:( luckily, my sister wants a macbook and hence im just waiting for the ultra portable macbook pro to come out so i can give my sister my macbook. any latest rumours on its release date?:(

I think there is something you need to understand : you can't have everything.

I mean, the 15'' MBP is a "feat" in itself for pushing so much power in a case so small. Of course, Apple would be able to create a smaller or lighter Macbook Pro, but not without geatly dismishing the spec of the machine (so, it would not be "Pro" anymore).

All this processing power (including a viable 3D graphic card) is producing a lot of heat and need space also just for the material.

If the Macbook is already too heavy for you, I don't see how a machine can be at the same time more powerful and lighter.

Face it, you want a really powerful computer, you need to make some sacrifice on portability.

You want portability, you have to make sacrifice in power.

Computers still have to deal with laws of physic.

Considering how hot the current MacBook Pros already run at... I would say never.

What kind of person uses a MacBook for professional video editing?

... anybody else here hoping for a 12-13 inch MBP?
Me, but 11" would be better.
I'm finding the 15" MBP to be pretty darn portable.
Not compared to a VAIO TZ
If you consider the 15" mbp to be heavy for carrying around to classes you have these choices:

a) get a membership at a gym or use the on-campus rec facility...
Not all users are still in school
suck it up.
How would you feel if everybody worked an hour or two less than you each day? Would you suck it up?

When I was at school computers were wheeled about on carts, now I'm all growed up I want something more practical.
Well I didn't get the bus thats for sure.
Or a plane.

The main market for ultra potables I imagine would be the business, or frequent, traveller. I live on an island and the local VAIO dealer says he sells more TZs than anything else because people want them to travel with.

Try taking a 15" MacBook Pro (2.45kg - plus case etc) on a flight where you only have a 5kg carry-on baggage allowance. I had to leave mine at home last weekend as clothes and toiletries alone near enough made up that weight.

With the increase in delays due to security and baggage handling at airports, more people including myself are choosing not to check baggage in, but the cabin baggage allowance is very restrictive. Apple need to provide a solution for frequent travellers!

have you thought that maybe this "ultra portable" won't be powerful enough either?

I mean if its going to weigh 3 lbs, and be all flash memory, there is no way that it will have a powerful chip in it because power consumes battery and it doesn't have a big battery because it weighs only 3 pounds.

Sometimes it helps to have an engineering degree, then I can think through the REAL tough thought process.

I was going to wait, but then I thought, " I need at least a 80 GB HD" and 32GB of flash HD isn't enough, so why bother.

Dude you're going to be disapointed if you want power!

This has been covered in other threads before but portability doesn't always mean weight, it also means space. I'm too lazy to look up specific links but I know I've seen posts on MR where people have said a 15" is not practical in coach.

suck it up.

or hit the gym and get stronger ... LOL

acctually to the person asking about serious video editing on an Macbook Pro ... the 17 inch is used by in the field news teams to cut there footage together quickly

macbook pro ultra light price range

can someone guesstamate wat the price for the ultra light MBP would be , thnx:cool:

Buy an Asus eeePC
Is that supposed to be funny, it isn't, or actually a suggestion to the OP? Either way it's not a helpful answer, the Asus eeePC isn't in the same league as even the Apple MB let alone the MBP. Maybe you mean the Asus U1F which would be my choice over the MB or MBP if only it ran OSX.

"STOP WHINING!" ::: Said in an Arnold Swarzenager voice :::

just kiddin...

But...

I have a 17" PowerBook that I carry around with me everywhere. And I mean everywhere. I got the incase sling bag for it and its strapped to my back every day i leave the house. If I can handle a 17" PowerBook, you can handle a little macbook pro. Shoot... I'm thinking I could strap one of those fancy new iMacs to my back. bluetooth keyboard and mouse... I'm golden. :X

12" laptops are for girls.

:p

So that's 3.1kg for the 17"MBP and say another 1kg for the bag and charger.

You get an allowance of 5kg carry-on baggage for your flight, so you going to take a change of underpants OR socks?

Doopsie, you don't want to give it to your sister, you want to give it to me...These aren’t the droids you're looking for...

What about having a portable machine AND plugging it into a large monitor? That's exactly what I do with my 12" powerbook.

Buy a Mac Pro?
will have MUCH better performance and is upgradeable and cheaper..buy a macbook and a mac pro for home use..sounds much better.

That's not very true, ;) I use photoshop, motion 3, final cut, imovie, lightroom all at the same time on the puny lil screen and i don't find it a problem, after 8 hours a day, for almost a month of consistent use. :D

the little screen MIGHT work for SOME people but in general the 13'' isnt enough for such stuff..and if it was for those SOME people they still know that the 15'' is away MUCH bettter.

yeah, i was actually hoping for a high def 13 inch screen. :) anyway, im still hoping my my ultra portable macbook pro. and will keep a lookout for upcoming rumours after leopard is released. =)

i wear my incase over my shoulder and carry a carry on. always do.

If you think a five pound laptop is considered "heavy" be thankful you weren't trying to do this 6 years ago when $3k bought you an 8lb computer with a 1Ghz processor and maybe 256mb of ram. It's amazing the mbp is as light as it is and the macbook is right in line with comparable offerings. Engineering means that the smaller machine is going to be lower spec. 32gb SSD on a computer whose OS takes up 21GB? Keep dreaming. It would be slower than your macbook.

If you look at the ultraportable computers out there most of them are 1.5 or 1.6GHz single core with integrated graphics, because the casing can't take the heat from anything else. It wouldn't run 3d better than your macbook, that's for sure.

your main problem is the MB's integrated GPU. Once you get into FCS , you cannot have enough screen space.
