If you think a five pound laptop is considered "heavy" be thankful you weren't trying to do this 6 years ago when $3k bought you an 8lb computer with a 1Ghz processor and maybe 256mb of ram. It's amazing the mbp is as light as it is and the macbook is right in line with comparable offerings. Engineering means that the smaller machine is going to be lower spec. 32gb SSD on a computer whose OS takes up 21GB? Keep dreaming. It would be slower than your macbook.

If you look at the ultraportable computers out there most of them are 1.5 or 1.6GHz single core with integrated graphics, because the casing can't take the heat from anything else. It wouldn't run 3d better than your macbook, that's for sure.

actually lenovo and sony have ultraportables with discrete graphics, 12/13" monitor and lighter weight than any apple laptop

I want a five inch computer I can strap to my wrist, and It better have quad-core and six gigs of ram so I can edit HD video while I'm walking to lunch!

I gave up, just bought a new MBP in apple's online store.
I don't think a ultraportable MB will happen.
When you look at the current Mac line up, they are trying to make things as simple as possible. Priviously, there is 2 lines of Mac laptops, the Powerbook and iBook. Now, there is the bigger screen pro's and the smaller not pro ones. Now, it's not 2 lines anymore! If a Mac Book Mini actually comes out, don't even expect it to be powerful or contain any graphic card. It will not happen. It most likely would contain a low voltage core 2 solo, intel graphic card, flash harddrive, 12 inch screen, that's all. No more ultraportable powerful laptops. No more 12" powerbook. . .

suck it up.

helpful.
Hell, with that logic,we don't need thinner imacs either, or chips that run cooler, or fans that run quieter...

I too would like an ultralight ~3lb laptop (pro or no). I currently have a 15" g4 rev d, and its nice, but not as portable as my thinkpad x22 was. I don't need an optical drive, and a 12" widescreen high res display would be fine.

preferably something that can run a real statistics package without melting (STATA, SAS, etc).

edit: to clarify, the thinkpad X series would be perfect for me (if it ran osx). I don't think video editing on an ultralight is the way to go :)

i currently own the latest rev macbook with specs bumped up to 160gb and 2 gb ram, but it's too heavy and not powerful enough for my needs, as i realised i do tonnes of video-editing and 3d motion as well! :(:( luckily, my sister wants a macbook and hence im just waiting for the ultra portable macbook pro to come out so i can give my sister my macbook. any latest rumours on its release date?:(

If you're complaining about the weight of the macbook then you'll not like the MBP since its .3 pounds heavier. Seriously, a macbook is not THAT heavy. From my experiences with them, they are quite pleasant to work with.

I've been a huge 12-inch PB fan, and i've had two myself.
After waiting for a MBP-12 inch for almost two years I sold my 1.5GHz 12-inch and bought the MBP SR.

I must say i miss the portability, not due to weight (it's really no difference tbh), but the physical size of the 12-inch was much better.

Anyway, the MBP was really an upgrade, especially the screen is very much better, but the machine is overall very much faster (duh, i know it has like many times the number crushing performance).

The thing i like most is that when i got the PB12 it was lot less powerfull compared to the Pro desktops, but today the MBP SR is really keeping up with the Pro desktops!

i wear my incase over my shoulder and carry a carry on. always do.

Well that's odd (especially as you have London listed in your location) because UK airports only permit ONE item of carry-on - at least to get through Security - which means a handbag or laptop case must fit inside this one bag. I've been on a few domestic flights recently where the restrictions were either 5kg, 7kg or 10kg for carry-on. Grrrr.

Seems like this thread has gone against the topic...seems to me like it was started questioning the weight of the 15" around campus...

and personally the few times I do fly in off semesters to see friends and family I take mine with its case, 2 spare batteries and ext. HD for my carry on with southwest, clothes and toiletries can sit in my pull around bag that i'd prefer to pick up afterwards anyways ;)

Assigned to the new topic of how heavy our machines are for flying around and going to starbucks and taking up desk space...geeze...we asked for more power Apple delivered, its a computer, a powerful machine that was designed to do as much as a desktop that takes up 4x more space (perhaps a bit of a dramatization there...to be fair).... If apple comes out with a ultrathin model and/or lighter...that would be my upgrade from my g4. Mainly cuse my fiancé likes the white macbook so my money for the next 2 months is going to paying off that and the new home theatre I had to get heh.

At any rate, build me a wicked comp for the next 3 years apple and I'll be a happy, satisfied customer and add it to the family's collection.

Not through any British airport you don't.

Some people travel for business, maybe staying over one night, they don't want to have to check baggage 'cause it means turning up 30mins. earlier for check-in, and waiting another 30mins. to collect your bags on landing. That's two hours wasted per trip if they're using some heavier notebooks over a VAIO TZ.

let me just throw this out there...

I just bought my MBP, i love it. and it weighs like 4 lbs... and its pretty dang portable! everyone always says "wow, its so thin!" and it really is!

yep, put my pbg4 next to one and its even thinner than mine was 2 years ago! Good lord, and even I get the "and of course the friggin apple is ridiculously light" when passing it around to guys at study groups
