I actually like how Apple asks for your intent before it sends anything over to ChatGPT, as OpenAI does NOT have the same privacy policies as Apple does for their intelligence products.

Will actually be good for those that don't mind it at all while keeping the more private options available and used instead by default.

On the other hand, I don't want to have to say "yes" every single time I ask, so I hope it's an option that can be disabled. Obviously show it for the demo as can be quite clearly seen in this forum there are plenty of nutters - but if we're paid subs i don't' want to ask, if I want information about something from homepod I just want to ask and not have to confirm the question.

Speak for yourself. ChatGPT Plus is amazing. I'll take ChatGPT built into my iPhone any day over Gemini or Claude.
Are you OK with the high environmental damage caused by ChatGPT and other generative AI? Especially now that it's included in one of the most popular phones on the planet? That's going to add millions of pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere

Whenever I want to find b*tchiest opinions on the internet, MR message board never fails to deliver. Go hug a loved one, touch grass, or switch platforms. Is it so hard to have an objective discussion about Apple today?

They really knocked it out of the park with finally bringing the calculator app to the iPad. I hope some of those same features come to the iPhone.

The Apple Intelligence stuff, as technically impressive as it was, was equally disappointing when they brought up ChatGPT. I watched a few interviews on youtube with John Turnus and I believe Greg Joswiak over the last year where they strongly hinted that they are ahead of everyone else in the AI game. Based on the impression they gave I was expecting Apple to drop some groundbreaking AI capabilities based on their own in-house AI developement. Instead we got a considerable improvement in Siri but then they just went ahead and outsourced everything else to ChatGPT?? Ok sure, but given the context that just came off as weak and anticlimatic.

And ChatGPT uses Bing, Google is going to love that

I like the way they’re doing this, with the option to integrate other cloud based AI in the future. Of course Apple will roll their own someday, and maybe that will be the default, but options are always good.

As for privacy, I’m not sure what everyone is hung up about. Idk if OpenAI knows that I have these ingredients to make a dinner or whatever. I use ChatGPT a lot, have a paid account through work, but I never send it anything sensitive. It doesn’t need that. People are so concerned about it, but gloss over Google tracking people everywhere they go and handing that over to police so people get arrested just for going near where a crime happened in that approximate timeframe. Or car companies that are selling out driving data to insurance companies so they jack up our rates just because we had to swerve to avoid someone colliding into us or brake hard to avoid a jaywalker.

The biggest advance in Siri seems to be the new edge lit design. I’ll be mildly impressed if it can convert Thai baht to USD and know when to use autocorrect and when not to.

I would be surprised if Siri can add 4 + 2 without providing me the results found on the web. Siri is mostly a piece of garbage.

Maybe you should ask ChatGPT what percent of the atmosphere is co2. Oh the answer is .004%. So, yes I am okay with it.

Finally, the commentariat exclaims! Apple is in danger of falling dangerously behind! The fact they are partnering with OpenAI is evidence of how desperate they are! In fact, I would argue the opposite: Apple is not too late, they are taking the correct approach up-and-down the stack, and are well-positioned to be one of AI’s big winners.

Never underestimate the might of Apple’s ecosystem and the power they wield over it.

No. This is a bad comparison.

If i say no to cookies, I am less tracked, even if I say yes, basically only a text string is stored in the browser.

With Siri being overwhelmed and therefore forwarding to OpenAI, (private) text, images or documents may be shared. This is much much more severe.
I think they could better ask once if you want to use ChatGPT because Siri gets overwhelmed by the first question and standards forwards you to ChatGPT 😂😂

You mean their misuse of their power and lock in to get the most money out of you?

It's the same "misuse" of the control they have over hardware and software that made banks fall in line to support Apple Pay, and I am happy to see those financial institutions capitulate to Apple's terms, not their own. This is in part why I gladly pay the "Apple Tax" for their products, because this degree of leverage is not something you can readily really find anywhere else. Not even with Google or Samsung or even Microsoft.

Take ChatGPT for example. For all their technological advancement, openAI will never have system access to my Apple devices, nor will they have access to user data the same way Apple does (eg: they won't know who my family members are, or have access to my calendar or music playlists). This is where Apple is uniquely positioned to apply AI to use cases and scenarios where only Apple can access (by virtue of Apple knowing everything about me though the devices I use).

At the same time, Apple has been very clear that chatGPT does not get any of my user data unless I have a paid account that I choose to link with OpenAI. This is where Apple's real power as an aggregator shines. They have aggregated the best customers in the world, and are able to leverage this to make suppliers (such as OpenAI in this case) capitulate to their demands in order to access Apple's lucrative user base. This also saves Apple the effort of having to invest in coming up with their own alternative to chatGPT, and if a superior offering arises in the future, Apple can probably just readily switch one out for the other.

And for now, it conveniently tackles the question of how Apple will respond to Google Gemini. By pitting one competitor against the other.

It's all so very impressively ruthless, and it works only because Apple truly understands the power over their ecosystem that they wield (which also explains they are fighting tooth and nail to avoid giving up even an iota of that power in places like the EU), and how they do not hesitate to leverage that power to get companies to serve Apple's interests on their terms (when they can get it to work).

An Apple with full control over their ecosystem, is an Apple that always wins.

This argument could be made for any sever intensive tech activity. Stop watching Netflix it causes loads of environmental damage.

You can only hope like Apple these companies will earn enough money to invest in becoming carbon neutral.

Timmy is that you? 🤔. You little old penny counter, busted 😜.

Apple is only fighting and putting efforts in not losing any penny. Why aren’t you listening to your customers Timmy?
They want computers that start with at least with 16 Gb of ram to be futureproof. And make them upgradable Timmy! If you really cared that much about the environment you had already done that 🌱.

Why isn’t their coming more out the pipeline of Apple? It only seems that there are 5 engineers in hard- and software being able to work on one device at a time?

When are you retiring Timmy? Your ideas seems to be a bit dated and it seems you’re struggling with the pace of the technology industry 👴🏻.

Timmy can you invest some more of your money into R&D? Data shows you only put 7% of you netincome into R&D. That’s relatively speaking the lowest amount of money of the whole tech industry.

I was worried yesterday seeing you on the roof. I was afraid you might jump you little old penny counting fox 🦊.

It seems you are tired and out of ideas. Please let someone else with good energy and a vision take over. You deserve to quit 😊.

Stop counting your pennies. Enough is enough and you better give some pennies to your loyal customers back by lowering your prices for more ram, ssd-storage etc. It will be a win win 🏆

Oh and please… don’t hide behind your nickname again and admit you care about your customers and the environment to truly show the world that making money is a different thing then locking your customers in and milking 🍼 them till the last drop. We aren’t cows 🐮 you know.

Get some rest Timmy and show some good leadership 😊

Bye Timmy! I hope you’ll invite me for your retirement party 🎉

💋

Why the button you can choose? We all know that Siri is struggling with any question. It’s better and more efficient to go to ChatGPT right away 😂😂😂
