I think so. Because it’s open ai intelligence and not Apple’s. They’ve merged ChatGPT in Siri and when using ChatGPT the data goes to open ai servers and back to your phone. Otherwise we wouldn’t be able to use the ChatGPT app as a standalone version either.

Apple intelligence will be different if I understood correctly. You will be able to give Siri certain tasks for apps.

I think Apple might've been better off partnering with a smaller player like Claude ai. It's not as good but pretty good. They would've had a better chance of closing the gap with their own LLM so when the time came to switch over, the drop in quality would've been smaller or negligible. OpenAI is the 800lb gorilla and they are not standing still. Even Google with their deeper AI experience is having a hard time catching up.

Once they've seen how the partnership works out, Apple has the option to try and buy Anthropic (it's an LLM, Michael. How much could it cost, 100 billions?). That way they can bootstrap their own LLM and have total control over privacy and if there's one thing Apple is about it's control. They won't have to deal with a suspect character like Altman, who lied to the board then got them all booted, and also pulled that crap with ScarJo

Timmy is that you? 🤔. You little old penny counter, busted 😜.
*Mask drops* So I am revealed to you at last....

(I will reply to this post before I go back to sleep) 😊
Apple is only fighting and putting efforts in not losing any penny. Why aren’t you listening to your customers Timmy?
They want computers that start with at least with 16 Gb of ram to be futureproof. And make them upgradable Timmy! If you really cared that much about the environment you had already done that 🌱.
People don't so much want more ram as they do want more ram *for free*. If users want or need Macs with more ram, they know where to get them. The ball's entirely in their court.

A wise man once said opined that people tend to know what their problems are but not what the solutions ought to be (or some version thereof). You don't run a successful business by giving customers everything they want. Poll anyone on the street - they will all tell you that they want more (of something) for less (money), but we also know that's not a sustainable way to run a business.

Instead, the better way is to use Apple's control over hardware and software to create great experiences that Apple is able to effectively monetise. Not engage in a race to the bottom with the rest of the industry.

But really, the chief reason why I don't listen to the vocal minority is because they are wrong, I know they are wrong, deep down inside, you probably do too, and time will show (to everybody) just how wrong they were in hindsight.
Why isn’t their coming more out the pipeline of Apple? It only seems that there are 5 engineers in hard- and software being able to work on one device at a time?
The simple reason is that it's easy to do something different, but it's way harder to do something that's both different and better. That's why here at Apple, you don't see us releasing round smartwatches, folding phones, netbooks or phones with physical keyboard.

Apple is a design company, with designers searching for and having technology made to serve the product experience, rather than have engineers excited about hot new tech and then trying to turn it into a product. Such a process will naturally take longer than, I dunno, slapping a flexible display on a phone and calling it a day.
When are you retiring Timmy? Your ideas seems to be a bit dated and it seems you’re struggling with the pace of the technology industry 👴🏻.
I will retire when the board feels I am incapable of leading Apple any longer, and on all counts, I seem to be doing a great job of leading Apple and meeting all my KPIs.
Timmy can you invest some more of your money into R&D? Data shows you only put 7% of you netincome into R&D. That’s relatively speaking the lowest amount of money of the whole tech industry.
And that's a bad thing?

Meta is burning like 29% of annual revenue in R&D, and it's still not clear how they plan to monetise said project. I have no idea when it became good business sense to

Microsoft just recalled their recall feature.

Google just shuttered another service.

If anything, I would argue that companies ought to be more disciplined with their R&D spend, rather than the other way around.
Oh and please… don’t hide behind your nickname again and admit you care about your customers and the environment to truly show the world that making money i
I have never lied about Apple's goal of making money (which is really the objective of any profit-maximising company). It just so happens that Apple earns by making great products that customers are willing to pay a premium for. You are free to vote with your wallet (as is everyone else) and let Apple's quarterly earnings speak for themselves.

And speak for itself the quarterly earnings will.
Get some rest Timmy and show some good leadership 😊
You are right. I should probably start looking at removing the headphone jack from the Macbook next. Dongle sales haven't been looking so hot lately... :)

Good night (or Good Morning for those in Asia).

*Puts mask back on*

Ah, it's 7 am already. Time for breakfast. :D

It's the same "misuse" of the control they have over hardware and software that made banks fall in line to support Apple Pay, and I am happy to see those financial institutions capitulate to Apple's terms, not their own. This is in part why I gladly pay the "Apple Tax" for their products, because this degree of leverage is not something you can readily really find anywhere else. Not even with Google or Samsung or even Microsoft.

Take ChatGPT for example. For all their technological advancement, openAI will never have system access to my Apple devices, nor will they have access to user data the same way Apple does (eg: they won't know who my family members are, or have access to my calendar or music playlists). This is where Apple is uniquely positioned to apply AI to use cases and scenarios where only Apple can access (by virtue of Apple knowing everything about me though the devices I use).

At the same time, Apple has been very clear that chatGPT does not get any of my user data unless I have a paid account that I choose to link with OpenAI. This is where Apple's real power as an aggregator shines. They have aggregated the best customers in the world, and are able to leverage this to make suppliers (such as OpenAI in this case) capitulate to their demands in order to access Apple's lucrative user base. This also saves Apple the effort of having to invest in coming up with their own alternative to chatGPT, and if a superior offering arises in the future, Apple can probably just readily switch one out for the other.

And for now, it conveniently tackles the question of how Apple will respond to Google Gemini. By pitting one competitor against the other.

It's all so very impressively ruthless, and it works only because Apple truly understands the power over their ecosystem that they wield (which also explains they are fighting tooth and nail to avoid giving up even an iota of that power in places like the EU), and how they do not hesitate to leverage that power to get companies to serve Apple's interests on their terms (when they can get it to work).

An Apple with full control over their ecosystem, is an Apple that always wins.

Until they get regulated to death.

This argument could be made for any sever intensive tech activity. Stop watching Netflix it causes loads of environmental damage.

Ok? How does that refute my point in any way?

Thats my point: we already have massive energy use. We don’t need to add more on top of that. We need to cut carbon emissions MASSIVELY

Making society reliant on a hugely wasteful technology is a mistake and moving in the wrong direction

This isn't hugely wasteful technology though, its huge revolutionary technology.

Even the link you shared showed how OpenAI is negating the effects of energy usage. All of this and even cyrpto could be net negative with solar power and wind turbines, the same cannot be same of combustion engines. coal and oil processing etc.

The issue isn't technology the issue is governments wasting money on nonsense like "defence spending" (aka attack spending in the west, as none of us have been attacked by anyone since World War II) when they could be spending it on mass green power adoption which could easily cover all power usage for emerging technology now and in the future - if it only needs to run on electricity then it's a good thing.

Absolutely. 100% a farce. Just government spending to big business cronies.

China opens new coal plants every week.

I thought the world would end several years ago. Oops, didn’t happen.
In which cave have you been living? You also believe the world is flat I guess…

China was a very polluting country but their goals and efforts to renewable energy is a lot bigger than the USA or Europe combined.

It scares me that there are still people around that deny climate change. But maybe the climate in your cave hasn’t changed that much through the years. Have a peak outside… the signs are everywhere and the science to proof it also.
