I am not looking to stir up trouble but an honest observation/question: I see why some people put screen protectors and/or cases on phones as the glass screen and back can be badly damaged if the phone is dropped. But, should the fabric on a very expensive Magic Keyboard not be able to withstand normal use without having it covered by and after market material? Why is Apple, the company who is usually (used to be?) so interested in producing high quality, strong long lasting products selling a keyboard which appears not to wear well?
I agree, it's a good question. The primary reason I put a skin (Sopiguard black forged carbon) on my MK is to avoid fingerprints and because I love how it looks. If it helps with durability too, all the better.

It’s more for people who don’t like the marks the keyboard produce when using over the course of a day. For me my leather skin looks good and no marks will appear.

I guess if apple made it leather material the cost would be even higher.

I put on a skin and over time it frayed and when I took it off, it left a lot of residue. Kind of upset me but with enough work I got it off.

I ordered the leather skin from Xtremeskinsuk and it arrived very quickly, all things considered (less than a week), and I am now so relieved that I can actually pick the keyboard up without leaving fingerprints all over the bloody thing. Super easy to install. No bubbles. Honestly think it will be easy to remove without damage as well. Although I don’t know why anyone would want to take it off and get that horrible material back anyway.
Let the skinning begin

You both seem to have ordered the Xtremeskin leather skin and it looks good!
But why does one of you have the logo cutout and one doesn't?
It doesn't seem to be an option on the website...

I just choose not to have it on...I’ve added it on now though

Ordered SopiGuard black leather skin, will post results once installed. Seems like many people promise photos but never come through!

dBrand just sent me an email survey about interest in skins for iPad accessories. Curious to see how this plays out.

Glad to see there are alternatives to Slickwraps... I was happy with them until my last order and it seems now they just took my money and ran off with it...

Nice that there are two alternatives for leather skins, I want to equip my iPad and the magic keyboard (as soon as I ordered one) with a leather skin and was wondering... does anybody know of a brand offering real leather skins?
The ones from Slickwraps were always premium and beautiful, never tried another brand’s leather skins.

This is what I want, a premium real leather skin. I wish apple would have released a more expensive saddle brown leather magic keyboard as an option.

I put a skin on mine for a wee bit more protection from the inevitable marks its going to pick up through daily use although I’m hopeful it’s going to fare better than their other covers made from similar material. Plus, i can put stickers on it without any worries about getting them off at a later date.

From the Sopiguard website:

Please Read before Purchase:
“Due to the rubbery texture on the Magic Keyboard case, some residues may remain on the surface when sticker removed. However, we were able to remove and clean up the residues with alcohol wipes (or goo-gone) without damaging the surface of Magic Keyboard. If you do not wish to spend time on cleaning up the residue, please do NOT purchase this product, nor putting any sticker product on your case. Again, there is no evidence that a sticker product will do damage to the surface of the case. But please do use it at your own risk. Thank you”

Are the xtremeskins ones easy to ’install’? Part of me worries about how they might damage the case material if/when the time comes to remove them. If they’re putting that disclaimer in place it’s likely because at least one person has had this issue.

I think you might be right. I'm now waiting for DBrand to make one as they are trying to make it so any glue won't damage finish. Hopefully, they've learnt some new techniques after the Switch issues.
