No. I'm saying the mark may be indicative of something the camera has been through that may lead to other problems.

In all likelihood, the camera is a 100% functional and even if it's 80%, you would likely find out during the warranty period.

The key question here isn't the camera, it's you. Does this bother you so much that it will interfere with your use and enjoyment of the unit?

No, I wouldn't. To me, it seems completely superficial and is barely noticeable. Frankly, if I were the retailer and you returned it to me, I would be tempted to roll my eyes and ask, "Seriously?"

But it doesn't really matter what I would do. As many others have already noted, the question is how much it is going to bother you.

And in 5 years it will be a $2 paperweight. If you're so worried about not marking the camera that you're afraid to use it, you're doing it wrong. The camera is only worth the pictures you take with it.

A barely visible mark on a $1500 camera is not worth worrying about. For a given street price, do you prefer Canon put more of the money into making the electronics flawless or the plastic housing flawless, or raise the price because they're going to make their money no matter what?

A quick Google search turns up lots of pictures with a similar mark. Some look just like yours, some are a complete square and some are different corners from said square.

If you don't like a mark that looks like a '7' you can try returning it until you get a 'L' instead. ;)

well i was thinknig of getting this to prevent marks in the first place, its a silicone case. anyone of you ever used or seen these? seems uncommon

I have one for a much, much more expensive body. Mostly, because when the camera was new I got a lot of questions about the price of the camera and this hid the model number. It's off the camera now- it got in my way trying to quickly change batteries.

I have seen them online, but not in person. Have not felt the need for one on my own camera, but if you think it would put you at ease and lead you to get out and about with your camera, then maybe it is worth considering.

so you got yours for covernig the identity of your camera rather then protection? didnt think alot of people did that, appraoching you asking how much ur camera was when a simple google search could suffice lol

just to update everyone i took it back and got another new one.

FLAWLESSSSSSSSS :D:D:D:D

Now I am happy with the camera. Imean its a small mark but 1500 dollars, couldnt justify it

thanks for all your inputs and support.

will be enjoying my new 70D with 18-135mm STM lens for video and 35mm 1.4 L lens

Was that before or after installing the hand strap that you complained left a permanent mark?

In all seriousness, glad it worked out for you. Hope you can get out there and enjoy getting some scratches on it now!

oh this was after installing the hand strap. the bonus is I guess I got a not damaged sticker to? lol that didnt really matter much though. HOWEVER, I do liek the strap so i went to home depot and bought a flat rubber washer to put between the camera body and hand strap mount to the textured mount doesnt press on the bottom of the camera/sticker.

the camera will eventually get scuffs or something in the long wrong, but that would be made by me. i jsut wasnt happy it was like that out of the box. i got one of those silicoe cases to to go on top of it when i take it out.

wish the 70D was made of magnesium body like the nikon d7100 for better durability, an all plastic design for a 1k plus camera seems a bit
"cheap" on CAnons part

what "Small cosmetic mark"

Maybe it's just me, but I have no idea what the original poster is even talking about... I don't even see any "Small cosmetic mark"

very mature post for someone whos a macrumors member since 2004.

Why would I get a 6D? thats a stupid suggestion. It costs way more and only worth it for people who actually do photography as a living

I am just joking, anyway, I paid $1399 for my 6d at amazon.
I dont do photography as a living.

I have something very similar for a 7D. I bought it before I went on holiday to a malaria zone, to protect the camera from deet-based insect spray (which eats through plastic and makes the painted lettering rub off the buttons). It worked for that purpose but I wouldn't have it on the camera any other time - it feels horrible and adds a lot of squidgy bulk.

My camera actually had a similar defect to yours when new - an unpainted bit of bare metal visible on the lip underneath the pop-up flash. I covered it up with magic marker but that quickly wore off. I think having the odd bump and scratch on your camera gear is okay, makes it look like you actually use it.

its still a crop sensor camer and the 6D is out of date, replaced by the 7D.

The 70D is more ideal for viddoe as well which Im also using thanks to its insane auto focusing tracking for video. super quick

i took it back since i couldnt justify paying that much to recieve marks. made by me thats okay, but right out of the box is unaceptable and who know what that could bea sign of future issue if it was actually bumped or something prior.

the one i got now is perfect! :):D:D:D:D

That's understandable. I kept my marked 7D because they were in short supply - it was the only shop in town that had one in stock.

Have you seen how tough these things are? In this video the camera is dropped, run over, thrown down stairs, frozen solid, shot with an air rifle and set on fire, and it still works afterwards.

And I thought I had bad OCD for marks etc. I take it it's that slight 'white' blemish under the canon logo about 1mm in size? I bet the store thought you were barking mad ;)

Why did you need to remove the lens to get a picture of this?

spec wise is the 7D better then the 70D?

the white is jsut a reflection, its a worn mark from manufacturing or abuse or something. no it doesnt fffect anything but i stil spent 1500 on a new camera an expect it to be flawless all the way around.

whihc i finally got.

There's a difference between taking care of your gear and babying your gear. Getting a silicone case for a camera is babying.

Cameras are tools to get a job done. Even if you're only taking photos as a hobby, it's still just a tool.

ur picture well, my camera aint as high end as that nor as good as weathered sealed.

so your saying when people buy a case for their iphone which everyone practically does, their "Babying" their phone? I want to get a case when i take pics at parties and such. casual photography or video i doubt iil use it.

if i was babying it, i would get those massive clear plastic box cases for it.

Pretty much. I run my iPhone naked, too. Although, I'll admit when I bought my dad his iPhone, I gave him an Otterbox for it, because I know he's going to be clumsy with it.

I'm not a fulltime photographer, but I use my camera on location quite often. I'll set it down on the dirt, gravel, or what not. I've nicked the case on a couple places because of that or because the camera hit metal on my person while slung (e.g. knife clip). But when you're shooting, the last thing on your mind (within reason) should be whether or not you're going to scratch your camera.

The value of a camera depreciates quite rapidly, anyway. The price difference between a used camera in pristine condition vs one with a few use marks isn't going to be much.

But I don't want to get all didactic. If you want to baby your gear, go for it. Just don't let your concern for the well being of your gear get in the way of it's actual use. I encountered one guy who refused to take out his camera in the desert because he forgot to bring a UV filter for his lens.

Are you talking the 'mark' below the letter 'a'?

Good heavenly Father, use the camera, real world, for just one weekend.

Then see if you still notice it or if it stands out any more than the marks YOU put on the camera.

:)

OP, don't get discouraged by the replies in this thread. This is a very helpful forum for photographers of all levels.

Understand that many of the regulars are either professionals or serious amateurs. People that really care about photography either because it's their living or because it is a passionate hobby.

Photography is about the images you produce, not about the gear you use to create it. Or rather the gear is only important to the extent that it is the right tool for the job.

I know spending $1500 on a camera may seem like a huge amount of money to you (and it is for most people, don't get me wrong). But assuming the reason you spent so much is to create the photos you want, the emphasis should be on how the 70D works, not on how it looks. You didn't spend that much to have a fashion accessory, you (presumably) spent that much because it was the right tool for what you wanted to achieve with your photos.

Much of the negative feedback you're getting is related to this seeming disconnect in the focus of your post. If there were functional defects in the first body, then clearly it should have been returned. A minor cosmetic blemish in a body that otherwise worked? Not something that would have mattered to me, but I'm glad you ended up with a pristine body.

I think you will get much better and more positive/constructive feedback if you post images asking for critique on how to improve as a photographer. That is where this forum really shines in my experience.
