Personally if it lasts a full day then I couldn’t care less about what size the battery is.

I’ve never found myself in a situation where I haven’t been able to charge my phone when I needed to.

Very odd indeed. I think it would have been great if they just kept the same battery sizes and took advantage of the A14 battery gains to get more juice out of the same pack rather than reduce the battery size.

I would have loved to see how the 12 series fair when using a 5G network but looking at Apple’s wording in the Battery section suggests that they didn’t really test these things on an actual 5G network but rather tested on networks that happened to be subscribed to 5G, their wording between iPhone 11 series and SE versus 13 series is pretty interesting:
“Testing conducted by Apple in August 2019 using preproduction iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max units and software, on both GSM and CDMA carrier networks.”

“Testing conducted by Apple in August and September 2020 using preproduction iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max units and software, subscribed to LTE and 5G carrier networks.”

when they say that the newer model last longer than the older one, it has and always been longer.

Problem is, I'm not buying iPhone 12 to use 4G.

TSMC 5nm offers 15% power savings over 7nm at iso-speed. Apple increased the clock from 2.65GHz to 3.0GHz, so any savings from TSMC were used up.

mm wave 5g is the equivalent to driving a new Audi R8 on the track, it simply uses more fuel/energy to give that insane performance. Luckily 5G defaults to an "auto" cellular setting, that will intelligently select the best network based on the activity being done on the phone and presumably actual network conditions. I expect with my normal use to not notice the battery life difference, and I am downsizing from a 11 Pro Max to the 12 Pro.

Size of battery is not the sole determination of battery life. It's about the power efficiency of the SoC, the other systems demanding power and the ability of the software and OS to leverage it. Counting mAh only matters between two of the same device with the same version of the OS.

The proper tests compare to fresh 11s last year. Use identical test(if possible) some reviewers do this

5G as it is today will not be usable for everyone and in most things we do on our I phones. I’m hoping the 5nm SoC will compensate for some power

Maybe I miss something but how can the battery life be different between 12 and 12 Pro ? I tought it's was exact same battery capacity.
Except if it's a slighty less energy efficicent screen at same given brightess vs 12 Pro, I don't see how is it possible to have any difference.

I would not be surprised if by repeating those test to the battery is on average the same or at leas way closer than 1hour difference in 4G.

Of course thats why i said where its possible. Also the 11 was designed and engineered for ios13 the 12 for ios14. It will be very difficult to get true apples to apples. Same with the apps they are all updated as well. Netflix, spotify, chrome etc.

Makes you wonder if this test is even valid. The results show a 1 hour difference between iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. How is this even possible when both devices have the exact same battery capacity, A14, and display size.

Personally the hype over 5G is mostly that, so Europe isn't missing much with mmWave.

Considering you getting gigabit speeds requires you to be precisely standing on certain streets, I don't really see the point in hurting battery life chasing a signal.

Everyone gave Apple crap for not shipping a 5G phone even earlier, but the case for not shipping one back then remains the same as now—5G burns battery for relatively few real-world benefits depending on where you are. It's not like it makes the phones not a worthy upgrade—OLED on the regular 12 and better cameras are each probably a reason some people upgrade—but I don't think it makes sense to buy a 12 or 12 Pro if your main concern is 5G. By the time the networks are more mature and widespread, you'll be able to get a more power-efficient and more powerful iPhone. Such is the march of technology, and early adopters will always pay comparatively more for less as a tradeoff of being first.

My guess is that if this test is valid then we will see a similar difference between the 12/12 pro across tests done by various tech youtubers. If such a difference doesn’t materialise again it’s fair to say this test was bogus somehow. I can’t really think of anything that would justify the 12 pro having a better battery life than the 12.

I agree. I have 5G around me, and I hope to use it. It’s going to eat through the battery quickly. I’m hoping for an Apple MagSafe battery case. I’ve had battery cases in the past but there were always pretty heavy compromises. Those could be eliminated now.
