They didn’t remove any coating...this whole topic is so subjective. As another member said, there are many factors which can contribute. One being that sometimes people are just not as clean as they think they are. Personally, the smudges that appear on my iPad Pro are no worse than any other iPad I had.

The coating is different on the 10.5" as many others have pointed out. From what has been said, Apple wanted to improve the feel of the screen when using the pencil making it more like real paper. So it is definitively more "grippy" than previous iPads but if you use the pencil, it's a good thing.

Guys I have had the iPad-3, iPad-4 and the iPad Air infact none of them were as bad in terms of getting smudges as much as this brutal 10.5" iPad is, The finger print coating on it just sucks ! It is bloody just not there !!!

Wait for the next 10.5 iPad, it will be waterproof and you can use it in the shower.......

I have the iPad2 and 3. They do collect smudges, but not nearly as bad as the 10.5 IPP. I got one of those and ended up returning it. Smudges were part of the reason for that. The main reason (for me) was that, even with all the spiffy new capabilities, like the display, the 10.5 just didn't warrant spending $650. It's an amazing device, but for my purposes, it wasn't so much better than the 9.7 inch models that I could justify the cost. But the smudges were significantly worse than my other iPads.

They you go...And people here are criticizing me for thinking about such a silly reason...

I'd start with why you want to buy it in the first place and work backwards from that.
Maybe you're just better off with a MB or MBP with phone combo and don't need the IPP at all. Then unless you really want the pencil you might as well save some cash and just get the 2017 iPad over the IPP.

Since I primarily use my iPads outside I've always used a Matte (Anti-Glare) screen protector. Life is full of compromises, not quite as clear as naked but it doesn't smudge at all and is much more readable in sunlight.

Oh No ! The iPad for sure is a wonderful thing that has happened to mankind ! So no doubts on how can it enhance someone's life !!

I have 7, nothing has been enhanced...!

I'd ltake a laptop over an iPad for 99/100 workflows. iPad is fine for children's games and the odd email. Watch a quick you tube, after that... meh.

while fingerprints on the device may be annoying, they do not hinder usage of the device. This happens with every touchscreen device ever made, period.

I do realize that but does the 10.5" iPad Pro not have that more then other iPads in the past?

And by tapping on it, you left fingerprints. That's just being insensitive. :)

OP, I don't know a single glass surface on the planet that doesn't show fingerprints of some kind under certain conditions. Even textured glass. I suggest that if this is a serious post and you are really concerned about fingerprints showing you should avoid any tablet devices for the foreseeable future.

OP is totally correct. It seems some on here do not realize that there is a significant difference between the new 10.5" iPad Pro and previous iPads when it comes to fingerprint smudges (just based on my experience with a mini and an iPad Air 2, and iPhones for that matter). It is not the end of the world, but there is clearly a big difference and it is a bit of a bummer.

My experience, the iPad Air and 2017 iPad 9.7 with the non-laminated screens are the most fingerprint resistant. The Air 2, Pro 9.7 and 2017 Pro 12.9 kinda seem quite similar to me in terms of being fingerprint magnets.

I own both and agree that the 10.5 get finger prints on it but so did my 9.7 and Air2. Does not seem to print more but they do seem a bit more difficult to remove, but that could just be me.

Either way this would not stop me from getting an iPad. You just wipe it off at the end of the day and move on with life. If you can not deal with a few finger prints on your device while using it, a person need to rethink buying the device as it will happen to any touch screen.

This is true.. though I could go a week or so without even noticing anything on my screen on my old iPad. I definitely have to wipe it at least once a day now. Again, not a deal breaker, it's an amazing iPad and I love it, but it is comparatively worse in this regard.

I for one very strongly believe screen protectors kind of minimize the experience a little bit, which a naked screen gives you. So no I do not have any plans of putting a screen protection on it.

Not glass ones. They do nothing to negatively impact the experience, it only improves it. Perhaps you're thinking of the 20 dollar plastic ones from aliexpress. If you're not, you've either never used a tempered glass screen protector, or you seriously lack real issues in life and have run out of valid things to complain about.

Can you recommend one that you have used with an iPad Pro? The Pencil works well? Thank you.

Although the smudges don't bother me, I do notice they have an impact on the feel of the Apple Pencil as it glides over the surface. Smudges tend to create a drag. Since I haven't used an Apple Pencil on my previous ipads, I have only been concerned with the smudges on my 12.9 IPP2.

So now, I give it a good wipe down with Whoosh! before using the pencil and that seems to work for me.

Whoosh is a good Product. And you make a great point about smudges affecting the Apple Pencil contact, as it does create a drag as you mentioned. One thing I always have with me all the time with my iPad, is a microfiber cloth.

Man...first world problems. Seriously, how do you get through life when you find problems like this to be such a hindrance on your existence?

I have 10.5 and upgraded from Air2; quite frankly I can't tell any difference fingerprints, smudges or anything similar between the two.

I like the newer screen size, extra memory and it's a bit faster. Unlike many I do not see any yellowing of the screen, but what I do see is a much faster auto dim or screen brightness adjustment in the 10.5". Of course this stuff is for different threads.
